Anyone with 6 Apple devices in their signature doesn't count in this discussion. Unfortunetly they are unable to understand exactly what is going on.

I hope you're joking. You're on an Apple based website, don't try to say signatures show some type of bias.

All phones are impacted by this, some people simply may not notice it due to the coverage in their areas.

Been saying this for a while but so won't grasp the concept! If they did then Apple would be forced to do something but unfortunetly some people are just dumb and are quite happy throwing their money at Apple for second rate products.

Looking at your video, your speed isn't good. Maybe your cell signal is poorer then the bars show to start and you are actually going from 1-2 bars to 0.

Can you replicate this in other locations where you get better speed.

This is the issue apple is trying to address with this update. People are in poor signal areas to begin with, and when they touch the sore spot, it drops them to almost no or no coverage. As it stands now they are getting false information and think their signal is much stronger than it is.

this doesn't explain why my iPhone 4 has abysmally slow 3G speeds, compared to a 3G or 3GS in the exact same location.

One reason could be that an iPhone 4 is not an iPhone 3G or an iPhone 3GS. It is also not a Nexus One, or a Motorola 5200, or a Razr. It is also not a Palm Treo, or a Nokia 1100 or a Blackberry Pearl. It is not a LG Shine, Cookie or Viewty. It is not an HTC Magic or a Motorola Droid. It is not a Nokia 8800, 3250 or 3210.

Where are these videos???

Can someone clarify what the signal display update was done in firmware 2.1?

Here is a screenshot:
https://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/12/iphone-2-1-firmware-now-available/

The last line of the screen shot says "improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display."

In Apple's letter, they claim:

"We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. "

How can they claim the display has been wrong all along when they've already fixed it once?

I was also wondering about this. I remembered when they issued this update. Sure enough, my 3G showed more bars in places where signal was not so great (at work). So that update was just to fool us into thinking we had better signal and this update will be the correct calibration?

I've said this before - who cares about every other phone? People care about the phone they own. If I had a droid, I'd worry about what Motorola is up to and what issues there are with a droid. I don't. I have an iPhone.

Sorry, I meant all iPhones are impacted by this. Other phones on other carriers certainly are not.

Of course, the next big issue will be, why doesn't my iPhone 4 display as many bars as my wife's BlackBerry? It must be defective!

Apparently, RIM use the same algorithm as Apple...

Apple ONLY said the visual representation of the signal will be patched - e.g. the bars. They haven't admitted anything even remotely close to what you are saying.

.

But then there is still a problem. If touching the corner takes the signal from 5 bars to none and you can't use your phone that sucks.

If they fix it and it takes you from 2 bars to none and you can't use your phone that still sucks.

If you can use the phone in the same location only on speaker phone because the phone is laying on the table that sucks.

If this was really ONLY a software issue, bumper cases wouldn't solve anything.

The guy said he could show us videos of other iPhone showing the problem and an iPhone 4 not. I've only said let's see it then.

He actually got seven Apple products if you count the screen for his macpro separate..

Wow.
Lets ignore Apples letter admitting the problem.
Lets ignore Anandtech's excellent review, especia

Oh I must have missed that letter. What letter was that? Was there a new letter posted on BGR today allegedly from Apple or something?

Also, what about the videos of the iP4 refusing to load pages when it's held at the bottom? That wouldn't be caused by the bars showing incorrectly.

I seriously just banged my head right into a brick wall two times.

Considering that I'm on 5 person plan with ATT, my whole business ecosystem revolves around Mac, and there are restocking and plan cancellation fees to deal with, just returning the phone isn't as easy as it seems.

There are no restocking fees just return the device or devices to apple. There are no plan cancellation fees, as you plan is not extended when you return the device.

Look at that, I solved all your problems for you!

I think I missed something. Where did they say it's a hardware issue?

They didn't say it was a hardware issue, nor did they say it was a software issue. That is what some people seem to be missing. They didn't say it was any issue.

All they said was they were reporting signal strength in a manner that might be confusing to people, making them think they should be getting better cell reception in areas where the reception was actually significantly worse.

I like the fact that you try to be funny but fail on every occasion. You say that you can show use videos of other iPhone failing and the iPhone 4 standing firm. Was that a load of s**t or are you going to stick to your word?

LOL I just dropped a call on speaker phone with it sitting on my desk not even touching it and it just cut out, I called the person back just to see if they hung up and they said NO, I said well that would be my iphone then.
Oh yea, and all my previous iphones had worked just fine before same room, never dropped any calls, they have 5 bars without iOS4 and i4. Try to patch that :apple:

So where did he "not want to admit Apple f--ked up?"

Was your post in jest or just picking a random springboard to troll off of?

He was making excuses for the design. I thought that was quite obvious.

"if bars < 3:
bars = bars + 2"

I mean, come on!

Will it still have the same external antenna manufactured in exactly the same way? Let's see.

With bigger super-computers, more varieties of antenna configurations can be analyzed. My guess is that it will be a different antenna with a different set of trade-offs. Thus a different set of people will complain.

.......

That was a coding joke.

I get that you read the post, but I have a feeling you didn't comprehend at all....
