I would have loved a retro G4 iBook look instead of "incredible aluminum."
Aluminium dents if dropped onto a hard surface. Plastic will often crack if dropped onto a hard surface.

Not dropped, of the two materials, aluminium is more durable in regular use—at the same thicknesses it’s much stronger. I think it’s more attractive too.

I’m just glad they were able to hit this price point while somehow making no compromises.

Incredible stuff

Who says the reality distortion field is not alive and well!?
Hahahaha, right?

And the dumb part is if they would have come out and said, "look, this thing is cheaper than a Macbook Air for a reason, but we are really proud of what we have created," it would have been so much better.

Apparently being honest doesn’t have a place in marketing any more.

Then again when we saw what BS this company pulled around Apple Intelligence and the launch of the iPhone 16 line we probably shouldn’t be surprised they are lying.

The entire device is one compromise after another.
To be fair, they're talking to an "architecture and design" publication - the scope of the article being quoted doesn't cover the CPU or amount of RAM or the USB ports or other such internal details, they're talking about the physical design, which hits most of the high points of the Mac lineup. Compare it to the physical design of your typical $600 plasticy PC laptop.

How bad do you guys think the trackpad will be? I have a mini M4 Pro as my main device and this will just be for web browsing & such, I want the smallest possible MacBook. Wish there were a remake of the 12" but I guess this is the closest, a bit thicker than the air but I care more about footprint than thinness. Only thing I'm on the fence about is the lack of the haptic trackpad. Will it still be like, glass? Will it feel like a nice Apple trackpad?

“unapologetically plastic”
That would be the original macbooks!

Still one of my favorite laptop designs lol.

Also, IMHO plastic SHOULD be unapologetic. When they cover it in "soft touch" coatings that get all nasty after 5-10 years. Ugh. Plastic should be plastic. Plastic shouldn't try to be leather or rubber.

LOOK AT YOUR AVATAR! YOU WANT THIS!!!
Yes. I want an iMac Studio

A reimagining of the The Lamp iMac for the modern era with a height-adjustable floating thin, large OLED display and a weighted speaker base that houses the brains, a fan, an internal power supply, with some bonus Mac Studio-like ports on the front, for a great sounding, beautiful and useful iMac I’d give pride of place in my home office. Thank you and good night ♥️

I think the trackpad use the same mechanism as the trackpad from the old magic trackpad for iPad Pro. It uses butterfly mechanism. It is very nice to use.

No PR department of any company would ever say that. Completely unrealistic expectation.

Maybe not cheaper materials, but cheaper components in some cases — like the non-haptic track pad, slower SSD, non Display P3 screen, non-backlit keyboard, non Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, and no thunderbolt.

But yes — aluminium.

For all the teenagers who need such things for their video storage arrays, color correction for video production, and instagram browsing?
