How can you honestly look at the rest of the lineup and explain why you think it's NOT a compromise?
I wish MacBooks Pro still cost what my M1 did back when I started university: $1800 AUD. Now the Airs live in that price range 😭 and upgrading my model becomes a pipe dream.

This comment reminds me of that silly Apple ad in which the guy's conducting a seminar to high school students on how to talk their parents into buying them a Mac. If he just said, "There's a budget option now" then seminar's over and the parents are ordering Neo before the end of the night.
I'm aware, but honestly you're looking at it the wrong way. Double the storage for an extra hundred bucks would be fine, and expected. But gating an important feature like that is just greed. They looked at it and said "most people are going to opt for the cheaper one" and in their never-ending desire to make the base model unattractive, they ripped out a must-have feature and put it behind the BTO gate.
A modern one would be so much better looking than the chin iMac. 5 years on the logo-less stepchild is still ugly af. I have no idea why they retreated away from that design so quickly. The base can be designed any way they want, leaving so many options and so little restrictions on how it can be made and what components it can house. And the display can be minimal and gorgeous. The arm is most complicated part and if they nailed that 20 years ago, I'm sure they could manage today.

How can you even have this silly conversation about comparing the lowest end laptop against all the higher end versions? Yes it is compromised compared to a MBP Max with 128 GB RAM. So what?
I disagree and think that any student entering uni deserves computing competence with more than 8 GB of RAM on board. IMO the MBN is ideally suited for much younger students.
So are you saying if you were in charge of marketing for a company full of people who depended on you to do your job well, that is the kind of thing you would publicly say for every new low end product introduced? Instead of just highlighting the selling points, you would first intentionally bring attention to the already obvious negative fact--that the lower end model is worse? Why? For the dummies who don't know that cheaper models are worse?
I disagree. Whatever Apple had to do to achieve the price points that they met was worth the effort. And I think that it was a wise move to not really have a BTO gate and instead have simply two choices with four colors.
Because they expect most people will be smarter than you and realize that the VP of Industrial Design is talking about design and is not taking about internals or features.
For most people, they use the computer to surf the internet, go on social media, and send emails. This machine is more than capable of all those.

They're talking to an "architecture and design" magazine about the physical design of the Neo. The magazine's readers are not concerned with what's inside the box. You've misinterpreted (or perhaps didn't read) the linked article.
For me, the omission of mag-safe when the intended market is K-12 is undeniably exploitive, in my most humble opinion of course.
