There never was a PB G5, or any G5 portable, because they simply got too hot. The only Macs that got a G5 were the PowerMac and iMac. And the PM had 9 fans + a liquid cooling system that was prone to leaks.

Yep.

But here's the story:
The G5 was the PPC "saviour" when it came out back in June 2003.
Apple has been using the PPC G4 since summer 1999, and it had only reached the PowerBook (Apple pro-notebook back then) in January 2001.
The PPC G4 (manufactured by Motorola) had hit the performance "wall" of 500 MHz, and it took Motorola ages to get passed this barrier (same January 2001).
Intel had passed the magical 1 GHz barrier ages before 2001, and ever since Apple / Motorola were struggling MHz wise (read all about the MHz-myth to find out what this technically meant...).
Later faster dual G4's were made (a Dual 1.42 GHz was put into a Power Mac), but it's FSB which was shared by both CPU's was only 166 MHz..... etc. etc.

Suddenly (mid 2003): enter IBM. They gave "us" the G5. Suddenly "we" were up @ 2.0 GHz, and Dual CPU's, 64 bits, and 1.0 GHz FSB... per CPU!
... And Steve promised us 3.0 GHz a year later!

So, we had our new fast G5 Power Macs.... gr8.
.. and later we got our G5 iMacs... even better.... the Power Mac went Quad G5 too! (okay.... we never reached 3.0 GHz though...)
But what about "our" notebooks?
Where was the o so magical and predictable PowerBook G5?!?

Short answer? It was impossible. The energy consumed by a G5 made it too power consuming, and too hot to run inside a notebook. Well.... at least a nicely designed one. ;) Dell would have tried, if you know what I mean. :p

This was the end of the PPC era at Apple. And we welcomed Intel. And the first production Intel-based Mac was the long overdue Pro-notebook: the PowerBook, which became the MacBook Pro. With the Intel Core Duo.
New marketing phrase (to succeed "MHz-myth") was Power-to-Watt ratio.

And now you know the PowerBook G5 is one of those "never to have been's"... but has been on a lot of Mac minds in the past...;)

Wouldn't this just be routine maintenance of some sort?

Sunday seems like an odd day to update the store with something important...

I have a feeling that it is

Well they should atleast change the front page to something different instead of a Shuffle lol. They better not make us excited for nothing :(

Apple is going to surprise everyone and release the new iPhone today..

you'll see...

YOu Cruel, Cruel person, i couldn't read the white writing (colour deficiency) :p

It's not you. It's everyone. The background for these forums is white, and if I change the color to white, no matter how much you tilt your monitor, it shouldn't be there. It's only there if you highlight over the words.

I'm crossing my fingers for a drop in price for the Macbooks.

If the Aluminum Macbook drops to a grand, and they have refurbs for less than that, I think I'll jump. :D

But, most likely, this is just maintenance and there will be nothing new.

Dont worry, wasnt being serious :p but i think an idiot at Apple has deleted the apple online store lol

Got my credit card(s) ready (gotta' love that platinum visa!) i'm ready to buy something awesome, apple could suprise everyone and anounce something awesome or they could be doin something stupid that either no one will notice or no one will care about.

Oh God Aluminum Macbooks to be for $999? :(

If that could only happen

I called the number for Germany listed on the Apple Store's website. I got an exclusive scoop, but I don't understand German...:(

It's there for me. I'm pretty sure the background colour is off-white, so white text does appear (although I highlight anyway).

lmao..... :D

That proves the theory that some people will buy anything Apple makes.

If you look REALLY closely you'll see the white, as the forum background has a beige tint.
