THE APPLE STORE IS FINALLY DOWN!!! CAN'T WAIT.
Unlike a week ago when Prosser claimed the new watches will arrive simply via press release, yet the apple store wasn't down a few hours before 9AM EST at that time. If Prosser was smart, he would have backtracked when he saw that the Apple Store is still up, but of course he was too busy being arrogant with his **** attitude attacking critics on Twitter to be smart.

The AOD got me too, but then the battery life was subpar and I ended up shutting it off. While I love the look of the titanium, I definitely could have skipped it. But if there are big improvements to the battery life with AOD, some other health feature beside pulse ox, and a new color(s), I won't even kid myself by trying to hold off 😅
I am buying whatever they are selling,

S3 watch here and look forward to updating. I have no expectations. The moment will be here soon enough.

Everyone hates Jon P’s attitude 😂

It still baffles me they have to take down the whole website this early to prepare for an update. Maybe it is still for marketing hype but would think they would be beyond that now.
I was involved in managing a project that was for an Apple event a few years ago.....although I didn't know it until near the end of the project.

It was to install hardware into six data centres in the APAC region to better cope with the demand. Many hundreds of thousands spent on resources alone, HUGE secrecy about who the end client was and absolutely zero tolerance for missing the deadline. I've never worked on a project before where cost was so near the bottom of their concerns....it only made sense near the end when someone let slip what we were doing was was for the new iPhone launch.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of taking the websites down it is to build excitement, but without a doubt part of it is to seamlessly launch new products internationally without a hitch. They cannot risk anyone getting a sneaky peek ahead of anyone else. As always, Apple control their business with a firm grip....and we (mostly) love them for it.

This, imagine the sheer amount of traffic that they have to deal with pre-orders etc. Apple website normally always functions as it should, whereas carriers sites (in the UK at least) normally have to add a queue because there's just too much traffic.

I've worked at Apple in the Online Store engineering group. And so I can tell you, they don't take the store down to get some free marketing by getting news stories like this one written.

It's because of bad architectural design and creaky old software. It's over 20 years old and so there's a bunch of old tech still in there. Just a few years ago they were still running parts of the online store on old Next software tech !!! Yikes

I could tell ya' stories that would make an engineer forehead slap themselves dizzy. 🥴

And they won't spend the time to update and fix it. Stuff just moves too fast, so they just throw money at working around the mess. So, it goes down for hours because they have to deploy software and content throughout a few data centers with 1,000s of servers. On the upside, the operations control center is impressive.

Who would be beyond that? Apple? or Apple customers? Unfortunately... marketing hype is all in this world.

I really don't see the point in having two events. This would be the perfect opportunity for "One More Thing" to make a comeback with the announcement of the iPhone 12. The AirPods Pro were an incredibly important product and those weren't even included in an event so why would an updated Series 5 and a watered down iPad Pro be considered event worthy. Airtags? Who cares... A new iPhone is frivolous as hell, but it will cetinaly bring a smile to many peoples faces (mine included). Bring it on! I have a $100 Apple Store gift card burning a hole in my pocket and I'm just dying to use it!

I’m excited to see what they show off today, even though I’m 90% sure I won’t be purchasing a new watch, because Apple just swapped my old Series 4 with a shiny new-old refurb when i requested a battery replacement. No more scratches along the case, and the button feels clickier than my old one (maybe thats why they replaced instead of repairing my old one) so I’m good to go for the foreseeable future.

I would like to check the order status of the MacBook I have being delivered today, but I can’t because the store is down. So yeah...

I mean... that's literally what the problem is at most large tech companies. Tech debt, mainly legacy code, is a huge issue and it makes sense that Apple is no different.

I get great performance and battery life out of my Series 4. I have no reason to upgrade. I can't think of anything else that would make it worth upgrading.

I can relate. I've worked at Apple in the Online Store engineering group.

Yup. I worked on supporting the Apple Watch in the online store before it was even announced. We couldn't talk about it with anyone that was not on our team.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of taking the websites down it is to build excitement, but without a doubt part of it is to seamlessly launch new products internationally without a hitch. They cannot risk anyone getting a sneaky peek ahead of anyone else.
Nope and nope. That's not their motives for taking down the online store. Although certainly building excitement, launching without a hitch, and keeping things secret, are some of their goals.

I just wrote a reply about this as you were writing yours. Here's part of it.

Nice insight. As someone that also works for a company with a big online presence I feel your pain.

We have some great, modern systems but we also have some ancient core technologies which, to this day, are still being built upon and integrated into other things. The whole thing needs ripping out and doing properly but the powers that be are terrified that no-one really knows how it all works.
