It's the lack of Flash which will kill the iPad.

No my friend, it's the lack of flash support on the iPad and other devices both present and future which will kill FLASH, not the other way around, Apple's not dumb, they are playing their cards and gambling on the future of the internet, they see two possibilities for the future, a. that the net will continue to exist under the domination of a few large corporations like Google, Microsoft, and Adobe or b. that it will be free and open, Apples betting on b. and their first target is Adobe and after that, Google!

"Free and open" and "Apple" in the same sentence makes me giggle.
It won't be free and open if Apple is the only one that exists.

My point is, the average consumer doesn't care about what their computer CAN do, they care about what they want it to do. And right now, consumers want social networking and media, word processing, e-mail, music, video and that's what the iPhone OS has always provided.

I feel the same too. There are certainly many people who 'just' own a mobile phone but no computer and have some need for a bit more functionality than that, e.g. web browsing and email with a somewhat readable display (I know at least two mid age people who say they can't read stuff on an iPhone) and maybe a bit of fun.

Sorry, don't take it personally, but I'm really tired of explaining it.

And I think that if you're someone who doesn't find a use for the device I would like to see, I won't be able to explain its use.

Maybe we can get you working on Google's version of the iPad so that you can put them out of business with these ideas.

The dockable tablet computer laptop idea is laughable and will be a niche product with gimmick appeal at best.

I agree with you, however Apple is playing a dangerous game. You can't torch your competitors for being closed and proprietary when that's the very business that you are in.

The future of the web is HTML5 and obviously Adobe doesn't want to see it go that way since it is going to cost them billions of dollars.

The real nugget idea with the iPad, which is genius, is that the typical consumer could do 99% of everything they need to do with a simplified tablet and just hide the underlying OS from them.

I'm just not thrilled with Apple's execution of the concept.

I Pad

For 500 bucks, and 16 gigs what good is that? It should be 160 GB just like the i pod classic. 16 gigs will fill up in a week of use. People will be throwing these things away when Mac comes up with something people can use. How green is that? Mac should make them so you can upgrade your hard drive or ssd.

Plenty of people get by just fine with 16GB on an iPod Touch, which is basically what this device is.

HARD DRIVES ARE DEAD so no 160GB battery sucking, death clicking hard drive for you or anyone else that wants this kind of device.

You are happy with 16 gigs? I know a lot of people who have over a 100 gigs in music! Then throw on some pictures, then maybe download a film, or put your video project in a I Pad. I trust 3g ? 4g networks as much as I trust my cell phone from dropping out. I never heard anyone say that i Pod hard drive is loud. Besides ssd's are on there way. Soon a 100 gig ssd will be cheap. I pad should be upgradeable. Why throw away a device as your needs grow?

I see no reason for you to say I am wrong?

Hm, let's see.

I have a 55GB music collection. Do I need all of this with me at every moment of every day? No. I use smart playlists to keep about 2,000 tracks with me at any time. Maybe you should look into this "streaming" phenomenon that keeps you from having to have all of your media with you physically 24/7.

Same deal with photos. I have 25GB of family photos. I export my faves from Lightroom 3 into iPhoto and they are resized to the right resolution for display on my iMac. As a result, 1000 photos take up a whopping 100MB or so of space.

You are too one dimensional in your thinking. It is very easy to pack thousands of photos and music as well as many apps into 16GB of space.

If you are a video hog and want to carry a pile of films with you then simply upgrade to the 32GB model and you can easily carry half a dozen movies with you all of the time along with plenty of other stuff. Most people only put a movie on their Iphone/Pad/etc that they want to watch in the immediate future. I have a video library that consists of 80 blu-ray discs and 200 DVDs. I certainly don't moan that I can't carry all 5 terrabytes with me every day.

Hard drives are going away and for a good reason. They suck battery life, they have moving parts (and are thus prone to failure) and they are BIG.

In another five years most devices will have solid state storage, Apple is just ahead of the curve.

I agree.

Given that Flash memory got very cheap (just look at the SDHC cards or jump drives), offering a version that has only 16Gb of storage doesn't make sense.

But it may just be that this is the smallest problem Apple will be facing.

As we see in the rumors of the price reduction after the deflation of the hype, Apple is bracing for a not so great reaction.

Even people who like Apple products feel Apple is getting greedy and siphoning cash out of people beyond what is ethical. Especially in bad economic times.

Apple needs to learn. The sooner, the better. After all, it's just a company. Companies get ditched by their customers every day. And no company can live on the fanboys alone.

You really think Apple is the only one who uses flash drives in portable computing devices?

No, don't be silly.

However, you will note that other manufacturers hesitate to offer 16GB or 32GB of flash storage in place of a hard drive in a netbook, even though that amount of storage would probably suffice for the vast majority of netbook users, would increase battery life and reliability.

To put it another way, I fully expect Apple to be the first manufacturer to offer SSD as a standard feature in a budget laptop sometime in the next couple of years.

Hard drives are dying out and Apple, as the largest consumer of flash memory in the world, isn't sad to see them go.
