Technology is really turning me off lately---Facebook and Twitter:eek: Hopefully they will go down just like Myspace.

Twitter: one of the worst fads since the smurfs

What? These Smurfs are cool.

is it??? whats your reasons for saying that and whats the next big thing??

Why is it close to has been status? Well, just the feel I get from the interwebs and others. Sorry, I don't have a any proof, other then the vibe I get. I'm sure it will continue for years with devoted followers, but it will be clear to everyone that its death is more a matter of when, not it.

Facebook could make the "What's on your mind" feature and send it to all of your friends, it would serve the same function as Twitter.

It's just another form of communication, same as message boards (like the one you're currently posting on), chat rooms, Facebook, comment threads. I know you think you've got everything figured out but don't insult people based on how they choose to communicate over the Internet. Different strokes for different folks.

Twitter is hilarious. 15 year olds and NFL stars don't seem to understand that it is not "just another form of communication", it is Just Another Form of Publicity. As in, P U B L I C.

Grownups don't need to insult children, you're right. Just let them do it themselves.

Aren't they doing something similar for Facebook? Anyway, smart move as this will solidify the name App Store to Apple, as one and the same and make it harder on Microsoft or others to say that App Store is generic for anyone to use! Go :apple:!

Dang! I should have reserved that name! Did apple acquire it from someone arn? Do we know for how much if so?

Update 2: @AppStore is now listed as a verified account and has already garnered over 50,000 followers.

Ok ok, we get it. Can you please move on and find some actual news?

Well if you care about this appstore stuff, just bookmark this and check it from time to time:

http://twitter.com/appstore

Boom. Done. That's really all you need to know.

I mean, there are many, many other ways to use Twitter, but the most basic way is still "find 1 thing I like, bookmark it and treat it like an RSS feed."

I'll probably follow this 'cause it's likely they'll feature apps that are free for the first day or things like that. Could be interesting. If it's not stuff like that, I probably won't stick around.

I don't think that the "I just don't get it" statement was about how to use Twitter. Twitter is a primitive web service, there's not much to understand about its technical points. But what's hard to understand is the hype about it and why people are attracted to it and actually use it. Sending an SMS "to the world". Wow. What an excitement. There were times when people who really had to say something either wrote books or held speeches in public. Now we broadcast a 100 characters excrement over the Internet that hardly resembles intelligent content. I join the other poster: "I just don't get it."

Yeah, not to mention that thing "the Internet" people went all crazy about. I mean, what the hell was that? Glad that fad is gone so we can get back to business.

Are you suggesting that Twitter is as useful and important as the Internet itself ? Do you mean to say that it's even useful in any way ?
It seems like everyone likes to log their inner diolog, but nobody really cares to read the other persons thoughts about the same mundane crap.

There's three main ways Twitter gets used: a SMS-like chat service, an opt-in advertising service, and a breaking news service. It's this third way that makes Twitter relevant to me and provides a service that no other Internet communications tool can do.

For example, I was stuck in Amsterdam last year when the Icelandic volcano grounded the world's airlines. News and airlines' web sites were woefully out of date and of little use, but through Twitter I could instantly find out whether flights were happening, what queues were like at the airport and what alternative means of getting back to the UK were available. OK, not earth shattering, but where major incidents occur, particularly in more isolated or repressed countries and locations, Twitter is now frequently the first way the story breaks to the rest of the world.

Twitter isn't just about #whoiscutestinyourclass

Welcome to the age of Sarah Palin and other curiosities

I have to agree, though. I also fail to see anything useful in Twitter ;)

Twitter is especially useful when you follow developers. (For lack of a better example) Gameloft was giving away games for the month of December that were only free or on sale for one day. Although I can't think of many off the top of my head, Driver is one that stands out.

It's also interesting to follow the jailbreak devs for release info and app updates, with the exception of the recent drama between them all.

While I will be the first to agree that this is a Page 2 item, it's astounding how many people on here are anti-Twitter (and, more than likely, pro-Facebook).

Important - no. Useful - yes, yes I am. Why? Because Twitter is essentially a personalized, curated lite-edition of the web. Sure, there are some people that just use it to read about what celebrities does every day or listen to their friend jabbering about their latest visit to the toilet. Just like the internet. Surely you wouldn't dismiss the merits of the internet because of this?

Because that's not what Twitter is about either.

Twitter is 99% crap. Just like the rest of the internet. Affiliate links, bogus get rich quick schemes and worthless spam. But for business owners, it's great. For anyone who doesn't 'get it', here's what I (and plenty of others) did:

Opened a Twitter account and set up my blog to automatically post updates to it. Followed a bunch of other business owners to whom I wanted to sell my services, plus some high profile business related feeds. Some of them followed me back, and I gradually picked up additional followers among users who saw me out there following others.

I wasn't even remotely interested in reading anything they had to say. Once I set the ball rolling, I just left it and forgot about it. Left them to chat among themselves about what they had for breakfast.

All my new followers got an automatic email saying "I offer X Y and Z. Contact me if you need my services". Heard nothing for ages, then suddenly last month out of the blue I received an email, and a contract worth a few thousand £s came my way. A local business owner had seen my automated email and happened to be in the market for the services I was offering.

So yeah, I'd say Twitter is pretty useful. :)
