I suspect Apple keeps this up so that Microsoft can't hold Apple hostage for money by threatening to stop supporting MS Office for Mac. Apple puts in just enough effort to keep iWork useable for the average consumer. Personally, I really wish Apple would start adding features back in.

You make a very sound argument and it makes sense, but isn't there enough alternatives out there already that Apple should not worry about this like LibreOffice and Google Docs?

There are a lot of alternatives, that's true, but they are all 3rd party. I suspect that Apple thinks it too great a strategic risk to rely on any 3rd party for its office productivity suite.

The battle of the free online Office-suites has begun...

Good for us :)

Well to be fair, it began a long time ago. Google Docs went live in 2007 and Office Online (or Office Web Apps as it was known as back then) went live in 2008.

Apple have just joined the starting line when both Google Docs and Office Online are at home, polishing their trophies. Unless you count iWork.com, which I don't because it was truly horrible.

zoho is another option although you dont hear as much about zoho as before.

but i think its debatable if its great for consumers.

Browser only is the way of the future, my friend.

Browser only is the past, my friend. It was in vogue in 2006, before smartphones became popular. Now that I have a computer in my pocket there is no need to access a web browser at your friend's house to have access to your stuff. The smartphone killed the necessity of a browser for everywhere access.
