My prediction:

Same screen as iPhone 4
Extremely similar body style
A5 like the iPad 2
Upgraded camera
Universal Qualcomm radio across all models, Verizon model may not have SIM slot though
Capacity bump to 64 GB
Black and white from launch

Exactly.
And it will be named the iPhone 4S.

(Or maybe, just maybe, they will surprise us with an all new freshly designed iPhone 5).

Whatever they do, I'll buy one for my wife.

Depends on what your definition of "major" update is. I'm betting there will be an A5 chip like the iPad has. Add in my likely guess of storage upgrades and I'd say that's some decent stuff.

I think next year will be the next "major" update. There's no way there won't be a 64GB iPhone by then, 4G LTE will be added, and hopefully the devices will work on Verizon and AT&T, maybe even T-Mobile. There will be a plethora of people like me who want to switch to Verizon but can't because they bought an iPhone 4 at its launch and will be getting out of the contract.

Oh happy day if my projections are correct.

My projection is that with next year's version (if not sooner) you will also see the iPhone on Sprint as well. And yes, LTE for Verizon and AT&T definitely.

+1

Seems to me, they have something up their sleeve. Dual band? 4G?

But on the other hand, we're close to a point where what else can you cram into a smart phone? Always room for improvement on speed and memory, but beyond upgrades to existing tech... seems we may be about spec'd out.

I guess we'll see in the coming months and years.

Yeah, it does seem like we are getting to the point of diminishing returns. Anyone remember the day when each new Mac was a major event? Now they slip out into the supply channel with barely a mention and very little advanced notice. I wonder if we will get to that point with phones as well someday. There are only so many new features they can cram into a small form factor. Better screens and faster processors, yes. But that's about it until some stunning new technology comes out. Like maybe the successor to LTE way down the road perhaps? Folding, bendable screens? But at some point, rather soon, I see things plateauing a bit for awhile. How excited will people be year after year with just a speed bump and better camera? At some point the camera reaches perfection from an average user point of view and at some point faster speeds won't make as big of a difference. (That whole diminishing returns thing again.)

I for one can't wait for some sort of flexible screen though. THAT gets me excited. How sweet would it be to have something small in your pocket that could unfold into say, an iPad? Ah...someday maybe.

Here is my prediction, similar to yours. To me this makes the most sense:

Name: iPhone 4G
4G capable
Same screen as iPhone 4
Same body (maybe some small update to address the antenna issue)
A5 like the iPad 2
Upgraded camera
Capacity bump to 64 GB

It wont be called the iphone 4s no matter what, the only reason apple applied the 3rd phone the 3gs was so they could stop confusing people and start numbering the phones in order. If they call it the iphone 4S that means next years phone would be the iphone 6, they are not going to do that.

It will be called the iphone 5 no matter what, and calling it the iphone 5 would make more people because people would assume its not just a small upgrade liek they would if they called it the iphone 4s.

Alright, I love these threads before a new iPhone release. There always seems to be a formulation for these types of threads

Many are down in the dumps about an iPhone rumor +
Many threaten to not upgrade =
The exact same posters excited come release day and upgrading the day it is released.

Many don't seem to understand this. After they call this one the iPhone 5 though that should remove doubt that the next one will explicitly be iPhone 6 and not something else.

Then you should start preparing for failure.

Apple knows that the majority of their iPhone users (probably 90% or more) prefer the current size screen and form factor. We don't want to increase the amount of space it takes up in our pocket as the portability would take a hit. And they aren't about to go against what a majority of users want and need.

Lucky for you, there are Android phones that are big enough for you, so you have options. Enjoy~

Where did u get that 90% or more. I'm curious. Lots of iphone users out there to poll.

Exactly.

From a marketing perspective, why would Apple use 4S when they could use 5? Even if very little was changed? The 3GS couldn't be called the iPhone 4 because it was actually the third one. No such problem now. This obsession with "S", which has appeared once in four iPhone models is illogical.

Having an A5 in your phone is like owning a Veyron in a neighborhood with speed cameras on every intersection -- lots of power that's absolutely useless to you as a user. Developers won't write A-5 specific software due to not wanting to alienate legacy hardwear (unless you're silly enough to believe anyone will waste time writing a killer app that the millions and millions of iP4 users cannot download).

Makes this phone a really useless upgrade, technically.

Oh, and it's still made of glass with no rim to protect the screen from corner impacts. Enjoy another 2 years of shattered glass with your $299 purchase.

Exactly, just like there are no apps optimized for the A4 right now because they don't want to alienate use with older phones. Nor would they ever introduce a universal app that changes its settings based on the phone you have. Oh wait...

Can't Wait

So what if they just change the "4" to "5" that is not going to stop alot of people like me from getting it the first day. :D

Just wanted to drop a line about what the guys over at thisismynext.com had said a few weeks ago:

http://thisismynext.com/2011/04/22/iphone-5-design/

Lately they have been on a roll with their sources with regard to Apple products. They completely nailed every single aspect of WWDC the day before. They were partially correct about the iPad 2 launch, but it sounded like there was confusion with their source between iPad 2 and prototypes (maybe even iPad 3 prototypes).

I also don't think we can discount the report about Apple purchasing special curved glass cutting machines or the release cycle being pushed back for the first time in the history of the phone.

They can redesign the iPad in less than a year, but not the iPhone? Steve making a big statement about Apple "not resting on their laurels" with the iPad design? Just seems to me that there's more to the story than a small spec bump.

No matter what they release in September, I will buy buying. I have an original Moto Droid. Since buying an iPad 2, Android is wearing on me a bit when compared with the app selection of iOS.

Edit: P.S. Numbers mean a lot when it comes to marketing. Perception is reality. If a company can make their product seem newer or better by changing a number, they will certainly do so in a heartbeat. A great example of this is Xbox. Notice how there was never an "Xbox 2"? That's because it would've been silly to put that on a shelf next to a "PlayStation 3". I believe that Apple is starting to see the value in playing the numbers game much more now as evidenced by "iPad 2". They wanted to show that their tablet was on rev 2 while everyone else was just getting started. With all of the Android phones out there now with "2" (and other numbers) in the names, it is a perfect time to throw out a "5" and seed the perception that it is 3 times newer/better than those phones. Just my opinion.

"iPhone 4G" makes more sense to me, especially if the only major update is to use 4G on att/verizons network. Hardware/Design-wise it will be an updated iPhone 4, nothing too major. You probably can use the same iphone 4 cases with the new upcoming iphone.

then again, i could be wrong just like everyone else.

18 people gave this ignorant comment a positive rating?

This should help calm your unsteady nerves... breathe deeply, and now think about this statement. "I am on a website devoted to APPLE products." Say it about six times, close your eyes, click your heels... and you will be suddenly presented with the reason Apple products are regarded more highly here than Android...

BTW... DING... make that 19.

4G definitely makes some sense... if this model is getting 4G, which is far from a given. I personally don't think they'll switch away from the new numbering scheme so quickly, but logically, 4G would be a possibility (unlike 4S).

Considering how many countries actually use 4G at the moment I can't see Apple implementing it. Can't see them calling it anything other than the iPhone 5 to be totally honest.

If I remember correctly, Steve presented the iphone 4 with such a strong confidence on the design and how refined it is; and I agree.

As far as the naming convention of the products, the "iphone 5" should be something that will have a major hardware/design update. I don't think the next iphone will be that, it doesn't need to be that right now. The iphone 4, design wise is, as steve put it, as clean as a leica camera. All the next iphone needs right now is an update, faster, more capacity, 4G capability, better camera.

Just like the update between the iphone 3G and iphone 3GS, this next iphone will be like that. 'iPhone 4G' or 'iPhone 4S'. not the "iphone 5"

But it has nothing to do with that. A previous poster mentioned that Steve won't be able to pass up the symmetry of the iPhone 5 running iOS 5 on the A5 chip, and I agree.

The specs of every Android phone in the same league as the Iphone....

As people have mentioned here before, there are a ton of users who don't want the larger, "clunkier" screen.

I wrote that. One doesn't really understand Steve if one ignores his reverence of simplicity. He's not going to get up on stage and announced the "iPhone 4S with dual-core ARM Cortex-9 CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics running iOS 5."

iPhone 5, A5 chip, iOS 5. New phone, new guts, new software. New, new, new. Steve looks forward.

Only one person's opinion matters and his name is Steve. :)

One correction: Screen will cover full width of frame. No change in screen height. :apple:
