Ive never cared about battery life, since Im used to do heavy work on my smartphones and therefore it doesnt last too long...

No major design change? That's a real downer. What was the delayed September release for, then? Was 4G so hard to implement?

I want:

-New design that is more consistent with the iPad 2 and available in both black and white, and less prone to scratches.
-Larger screen
-Better call quality and improved speakerphone quality
-Better camera, especially improve the zoom

And I guess I would be cool with that.

More like "Was 4G so hard for AT&T to upgrade their network?" Word is that Apple was ready to go with the iPhone 4G. AT&T, a month before WWDC, miserably failed their 4G stress test by an independant telecom survey company under Apple's direction.

The egg on AT&T's face was proably thrown from Steve himself and a classic Steve screaming session of "Get your $%*#ing network upgraded and fire whomever got cheap!" or something like that came about.

After a few token AT&T middle managers defaulted on their home mortgages since they weer fired, a lot of summer vacations were canceled to get the network up and running for the iPhone 4G and Facetime without WiFi.

The beat goes on.

Assuming there is 4G in it, actually...yes. The available 4G chipsets didn't meet Apple's need to fit it in a small thin form factor. I'm not sure that situation will be any different in time for release of this phone. Word on the street has been that it is not. SO, who knows what we are getting come Sept. If it doesn;t have 4G on it, it will be interesting to learn what caused the hold up. I know it wasn't the Japan Earthquake because word of the delay into fall came down before that unfortunate event. So the question then becomes why the need for the push back? Just so it can be the same as the iPod touch? That doesn't seem to be a good enough reason, especially with competition being so hot and heavy right now, but perhaps for Apple it was. We shall see in a few months I guess.

It will be interesting to see how Apple plays this iteration, in terms of carrier/wireless standard support. If my memory serves, the iPhone has progressed as,

1) EDGE (original iPhone)
2) UMTS + HSDPA 3.6 (iPhone 3G)
3) UMTS + HSDPA 7.2 (iPhone 3GS)
4) HSDPA 7.2 + HSUPA (AT&T iPhone 4)
5) CDMA/EV-DO Rev. A (Verizon iPhone 4)

It seems highly likely they will at least include HSPA+ for this new model, which would — at least in marketing-speak — mean that AT&T will get a "4G" iPhone. If T-Mobile gets this iPhone, they could also market it as 4G. So, the question as I see it is whether Apple is comfortable marketing an iPhone that is 4G, but with the caveat that it is only 4G on certain networks. Granted, that would include the majority of networks worldwide.

If they go full tilt and do LTE, then you have the problem that many GSM-based networks won't be fully LTE-ready come September 2011. Verizon is perhaps the only major carrier worldwide that will have LTE widely available. The rest are anticipating widespread availability late 2012 to 2013. Hmmm.

I think I will buy it as soon as the iphone 5 becomes available. A new design will be nice though.

I find it very hard to complain about the current design :D
It's amazing.

Isn't the AT&T/GSM one technically a world phone?

I'm in Japan right now typing this, and my 3GS is working fine, but of course, not w/AT&T, but w/a local service, since there is no AT&T here. ;)

I'll probably be going w/ the 5S when it comes out. I hope it has more memory though.

There's not going to be 4G, at most, HSPA+ (which while it is not true 4G, is considered "4G", however confusing that may be).

The delay to September is on account of merging iOS releases for iPhone/iPod with the iPad's iOS release.

I rarely pay any attention to any of the rumours found on MR, I just read them for interest, and quite often laugh a lot, due to the stupid & often OTT reactions of the gullible.

One comment in an article about no big changes (without any specifics of what is new in the phone) and people are throwing fits.

It is good comedy.

I hope the biggest change Apple makes is making 2G the default network for phone calls.

iPhone's biggest flaw is that it's the only phone that uses 3G as the main calling network, when 3G wasn't designed for voice, it was designed for data.

That's why the iPhone drops so many calls. Apple was happy to let AT&T take the fall for it when it was Apple's fault the whole time.

yeah, for the first time i dont think i'll be upgrading. iphone 4 is great, i dont see what they could improve worthy of the hassle of upgrading (and make no mistake, the hassle of all that contract business is a road block for some users)

Yes, thank god! I need upgrade relief, and it looks like Apple will be providing it for once.

I wonder what they can do to make a significant change with the iphone 5... the iphone 4 is pretty nice... aside from general upgrades, I wonder if they can come up with anything that's really "groundbreaking" or not... we'll see!

An MBA can kill the battery in three hours if you hold it wrong.

I know from personal experience that a Thunderbolt can go 16 hours if you hold it right. I also know that friends with Iphones complain about having to charge every day - and avoiding too much surfing if they're not close to an outlet.

Take any battery-operated portable computer and you can propose scenarios where the battery lasts a very few hours, or a few days.

What's your point?

Of course not, since both a Thunderbolt and an Iphone can be used all day.

I just returned from a 4 July weekend trip with my husband to his family. "Babying it" meant turning off the desktop wallpaper that had a live salt-water aquarium with dozens of fish moving about. (He has the TBolt, I have a Samsung WinMobile phone that goes about a week between charges - I didn't even bring my charger on the trip.)

Anecdotes are nice and all, but I prefer actual benchmarks.

As for talk time, it only beats iPhone 4 talk time when you manually fiddle with network settings.

Keep in mind the TBolt has a very slightly larger battery than the iphone 4 (1400 mAh versus ~1360). These numbers are somewhat typical for LTE phones: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4465/samsung-droid-charge-review-droid-goes-lte/10

Make it good Apple or many will jump to Android.

The current iPhone 4 meets or exceeds many of the today's top Android handsets in terms of hardware capabilities. What defines the experience is the software, so your comment should be more appropriately targeted at iOS 5. That will be the reason be do or don't flock to Android, not whether there is a "good" iPhone 5. Even a mediocre upgrade of capabilities will still put iPhone ahead of the pack.

The sooner the iPhone 5 appears, the closer we are to iPhone 6 which if Apple is still alive and kicking in the R&D department, is a stellar opportunity for them to get down to business and really make a good phone.

Time to wake up, Apple...

Which leads me to again ask the question...If I have a 3GS, and am able to upgrade, do I upgrade to an iPhone 4 now or wait for the 5? What exactly am I waiting for in the iPhone 5 that is better than a 4?

That's not an easy question to answer, since all of this discussion is based on speculation. No one but Apple knows for sure how the iPhone 5 will differ from the iPhone 4. Some rumors say that it will have a faster processor. Others say it'll be lighter and thinner. Some say it's an incremental change at best, while others say differently.

If it were me, I'd wait for the 5 to upgrade. It's only two months away (according to rumors), and what if it does have some substantial changes and improvements? If you upgrade now to the 4 you might regret it. On the other hand, when the 5 does come out, if it's only an incremental change that doesn't wow you, you can still buy the 4, but at a lower price.
