Lol, I love the number of others still rocking their 2018 iPad Pros! Add me to the list that have been hoping to be able to justify an upgrade, but not really needing it! I pass on my older iPads to my kids, and was really hoping to upgrade this year... but assuming this is true, probably worth waiting until 2024 now.

Same. I'm so glad I bought a 2022 iPad Pro last year. Hopefully can ride it out all the way through this OLED nonsense straight to microLED.
Agree!
I'll keep my M1; that gorgeous Mini LED smokes my iPhone 13 Pro OLED (for HDR content, al least).

And I doubt OLED is able to compete with iPad Pro's exceptional Mini LED in sustained HDR brightness level, size of peak bright area and power efficiency.

The report said Apple placed order for development of the OLED panel; it seems to declare that Apple aren't satisfied with even the best of current OLED technology.

Still using my 2017 iPad Pro, but I am starting to see signs of performance issues. But it still does the job for what I use it mostly for: YouTube, casual web browsing, Amazon Prime Video.

will certainly get the 11.1 inch pro. perfect portable size for at home. my fold 4 when on the go is the perfect balance I would say.

I mean this better make it into a 10.9 model.

I actually would have replaced my 9.7” pro by now, but it’s bonkers that their product matrix features FOUR ~10” iPads and yet all of them have worse display tech than both the smaller iPhone and larger MacBook Pro I already have.

Not paying for a washed out lcd backlight at this point, and the 12.9 is too big for me. So now I’m limping through a 7th year with my old one.

This plus landscape camera and I am in. I was considering an M2 iPad for extended screen support (over my 2020 IPP) but I think I will hold on.

Yes, landscape camera is a must too. It does make sense though that they would introduce that and OLED at the same time.

OLED is not happening. You got burn in and the battery life will suck even more.

The current battery life of the iPad Pro's are so bad, I bought a M2 MacBook Air. So with OLED it will be more fun.

Time to upgrade doesn’t mean ”throw it away”; it usually means move that TV to a bedroom or a game room from its previous center-stage spot. Most of us aren’t going to want to buy a TV that will be incapable of being used in a secondary spot.
Let’s say for the sake of discussion you move a potentially OLED in another room which may have burn-in, how many room are you living in and watching TV or working with external computer monitors this to me is excess and concerning.

While I don’t recommend watching TV prior to going to sleep due to health concerns of difficulty falling asleep, etc one can use a laptop or tablet that can be moved around and serve other purposes. Unless you spend most of your time in the bedroom then it makes sense. Having a TV in a child’s or guest room is also concerning as part of having guests is interaction nice reverting to a routine one would conduct at home. I am suggesting what anyone should do but this ongoing trend of excess TV’s and monitors in many rooms and most being unused most of the time is very concerning from a mental and physical health perspective.

Meh. It's not really that uncommon, and your C2 has a brightness limiter precisely for this reason. If burn-in weren't an issue, then there would be no point to having the brightness limiter.

Yes, if you watch varied content (which is what I do on my LG OLED), it's usually not a problem, but as even you yourself admit, it can be a problem with static screens like game head-up displays, etc. even with current models. Computer screens often have static images for extended periods.
It’s a very small concern with “bright and static images kept on for a prolonged period of time” Even with an OLED monitor or TV and using it with macOS the menu bar and dock have the option for auto-hide/reveal. Seriously this burn-in issue has been overblown and seems to still be an issue for some paranoid just like battery drain/recharge on an iPhone.

Yes, for modern OLED TVs, burn-in is still sometimes an issue there.
Either you enjoy life or concern yourself with the possibility and potential that something someday may go wrong. It’s not like we are talking about one’s health or death cost, we are talking about consume electronics that will be outdated with a new model in a year or so. Seriously people need to just live a little and not concern themselves with every little aspect of hypochondriac syndrome 😝

I'm not sure why you're so set on telling people just not to worry about it, instead of providing accurate information and letting them decide for themselves.

I personally will buy an OLED iPad, but I'm not foolish enough to believe that all modern OLED is effectively immune to burn-in. Perhaps the OLEDs Apple will get for iPads will be nearly immune, but there is no guarantee that is the case, and some people would rather not be the early-adopter guinea pigs.

It's actually a significant concern with gamers on OLED TVs for example, for good reason, as it is not really that uncommon occurrence an in that context when the screen is used at high brightness with static screen items for hours on end... cuz well... that's how a lot of gamers like to use their screens.

And yes there are things like auto-hide that can mitigate things, but this may require a change in usual practice for some people. For example, for a monitor, if it required dock auto-hide for macOS, that would be a dealbreaker for some.

IOW, OLED burn-in is actually a real issue that people should be aware of with some modern OLED devices, but it really depends on the specific technology used and the usage patterns. Regarding the latter, people generally don't use TVs the same way they use iPhones, but people generally don't use iPads the same way as they use iPhones either.

Says the guy who, one post ago, was extolling us on the "dangers" of watching TV in bed and in having a TV in guest rooms.

OLED burning has got to be one of the biggest myths in tech. This is not an issue and hasn't been for many years.

ross young says it's happening then it's happening

It's not a myth, burn in is real. Is ross young CTO at Apple or something? If not, what he says doesn't mean it is happening.

It's why Samsung is still offering mini-LED next to their OLED panels as they can get much much brighter (difference is not even funny) and no risk of burn in.

It's a non issue on devices these days, it's simply not an issue. Hell mini led has had more issues than OLED has for many years.

Err yes it does as Ross young knows exactly how many panels are being ordered and what timelines they are looking at. Hense why he knows what their roadmap is for face ID panels in the displays going forward. If this doesn't happen it would mean apple would pushback the date. He is a display supply chain expert so would know if they were building up production.
