That’s what Hollywood is counting on. Cool visuals and hot actors, who needs anything else?

Forget about plot, theme, mood, story logic, and especially ideas.
That assumes an awful lot about everyone who likes Tom Hanks flicks, or sees some value in cool visuals.

For my part, I can say those aspects appeal to me. But a wide range of cinema also appeals to me - for various reasons which include plot, theme, mood, story logic, and ideas.

I do need “anything else”. I just don’t need everything, always, in every movie.

I’m glad ‘Hollywood’ isn’t the sole source of entertainment, although I enjoy a great deal of what it produces. There’s a whole lot of less commercial fare from around the world that helps maintain a varied diet.

Y'all need to watch Ricky Gervais oscar speech in 2020 (before all the nonsense BTW - it was in January)

And watch Tom Hanks cringe in the audience.

This was one of the best roasts in all of history as I am concerned - very funny

Then go on Tom Hanks instagram later, which is where funny turns to dark and evil.

A photo? The movie drops in 3 months and all they have to show is a single photo?
Sigh
Why is apple so horrible at promoting its video content?
The alternative these days, a trailer that basically spoils the film. I don’t need a 2 minute spoiler to know I‘m going to watch this. (And Foundation, and Invasion, and multiple 2nd seasons. - the catalogue grows - really can’t go wrong with Hanks)

I don't even need a trailer. The one-paragraph synopsis in the press release is enough for me to know that it's going to be so sad in the third act that I probably won't be able to watch it. And if I do, it's going to be one of those bittersweet films that sticks with me the rest of my life, like Silent Running.

I think y'all may be jumping the gun a bit here. Don't assume that Tom Hanks = all that.

This is still Hollywood. My default is to avoid it. Maybe for a couple years even. Maybe longer.

Lol. When Apple held special live events promoting Ted Lasso many people on MacRumours were complaining it was being over-promoted; nothing to do with you, just an observation. I am with you, I would like to see more. That said, trailers and marketing are their own monsters which is not what I do.

To quote Dr. Frank-n-Furter, “Antici………………………………………………..pation!”
In that case yes, Ted Lasso is their only real legitimate hit critically and commercially since launch and they were just hyping the heck out of season 2. The funny thing is season 1 was barely advertised and flew under the radar until a word of mouth campaign lead to some prominent articles in various magazines and websites and then it took off, again almost in spite of Apple given how little they did to promote it.
Apple straight up sucks at promoting their video content, and season 1 of Ted lasso is a prime example of that fact.

I would strongly argue that Ted Lasso is not Apple’s only hit, just their biggest by far; in fairness it is one of the biggest hits this season on any platform. I would also be interested what your background is that you know so much about marketing? “Sucks“ is a strong statement. Your perception certainly does not match the reality of what I see in regards to promotional efforts but perhaps we simply have different perspectives.

As for my background I have made my living in film and television for almost 30 years in production but mostly post-production. I have also produced content. So that is where I am coming from but none of my experience is in marketing films other than seeing the result.

I am also a fan of a podcast from a CBC radio programme about marketing called Under the Influence by Terry O’Reilly. Over its 10 seasons it has done a number of episodes on film and television marketing. If you are interested in marketing it is a great show.
