I'm not at home, so I haven't updated yet. However, the one part of the update that I am a little disappointed on is folders. While it is good for non-jail broken phones to have folders, but to be able to only put a max of 12 apps in a folder is a FAIL to me. I will end up having 20-25 games folders if I don't jailbreak again once it is available.

where did all of this "jailbreak voids warranty" stuff come from?

just restore the phone and it's as good as new. they can't tell it was even jailbroken. i understand if you dont want to do it b/c you are novice or dont have time or whatever the reason... but the reason cant be b/c it voids warranty and you couldnt take it to Apple.. b/c yes.. you can.

Cant exactly restore if on the road or away from your computer but need to get help right away, especially if you brick your phone, so there are situations you cannot. And you have to lie, last few times I took my phone in I was asked if the phone was jailbroken.I choose not to.

What if the phone won't turn on? It won't connect to your computer? You are simply unable to restore your phone? Don't call people novice because they want to be certain they will be taken care of.

take it you never jailbroke before none of these features are really new. all apple did was take a lot of the popular jailbreak features and add them to the new platform.

Prefer non jail broke, the diff is these are optimized...Wont crash, run down battery etc etc

I agree. It's nice to have Apple certified stuff I guess. I mean, it might take Apple a while to push some "basic" features out, but we know when they do get it to us, it's going to be the best, no doubt.

Like I said, years must've gone into R&D for folders to be implemented. And that digital zoom is awesome, it was even cooler when I first used it over a year ago.
I'm sure years of R&D didn't go into folders, they have limited resources and they had other, more important things to address before folders.

Unless we're talking about Push Notifications. Those things suck.

I JBed my phone, but I prefer iOS4 to any jailbreak. It is very nice indeed.

Still. I can't wait to get my hands on my new iPhone Thursday. :)

I've owned a 2G, 3G, and a 3GS and have found jailbreaking to be a completely safe experience if you approach it like you approach everything else in life: with a little planning, reading, and thinking BEFORE you act.

I do have a few friends who eat up the Apple propaganda about jailbreaking being illegal and immoral and although I've tried to gently explain it to them that neither of those arguments are valid, they still think it's something that just isn't for them. At the same time, they're always impressed by the exponentially increased usability of my phone compared to theirs whenever they use mine.

I'm not saying everyone who doesn't jailbreak chooses not to do so for these reasons, but I have found a good amount of people are simply afraid of that which they don't understand.

Oh well, to each his or her own! :)

Eh, I've been jailbreaking these devices since the original image-based jailbreak for the 1st gen iPod touch, and despite all the cool new functionality, it ALWAYS introduces a measure of instability. Hell, I jailbroke my 3GS recently and all I had going was MyWi, SBSettings, and Winterboard (worked with Backgrounder for about a week before I got sick of it) and I still had a handful of Springboard crashes in the month or so that I was using it.

It's cool, and all, but I prefer my phone stable, even if it means waiting a while on some of the features.

(Except MyWi.)

For the record, I have no qualms with JB'ing, I never really had many stability issues or battery life issues after JB'ing...however, non-jailbroken iOS 4.0 > jailbroken 3.1.3.

For all your Backgrounder and MyWi lovers out, please try to look past those couple of things for a moment. Perhaps one you actually use 4.0, you'll start to see all the nice little tweaks in this update.

Jailbreaking had background APIs before??

Wow, I'm on this board all the time and that's news to me.

A little planning?

That's what turned me off jailbreaking. The one time I thought about it I spent about 2 hours reading stuff online before deciding I'd need way more free time than I have just figure it all out. There was no 'little' about it.

There's not a lot I need out of a jailbreak anymore. My jailbreak on 4.0 will consist of sbsettings, lockinfo, 5 icon dock, quick reply and that's about it. Once/If apple makes use of the lock screen I'll consider JBing to be a waste of time.

You're right, and I'll add that I had concerns about security as well.

I did the research beforehand and tried the jailbreak out of curiosity. I was VERY disappointed with the user experience. Buggy apps, lack of polish, and Cydia was a pain to use. There were apps that required complicated installations and those instructions were not always included in the Cydia descriptions. There were apps and themes installed that did not behave as expected, because the developers failed to mention there were 3-5 others apps I needed to download first, and then configure, to get what I wanted.

Sure, I could have spent the time to track down all the info (that should have been ON Cydia) and get certain things working, but ultimately it wasn't that important and I didn't care to.

As I didn't jailbreak out of a desire for any specific feature, in the end I found there was little I wanted, and certainly very little I *needed* from the Jailbreak. It was mainly curiosity. I uninstalled everything, with the exception of lock screen notifications.

Definitely useful if you have a specific feature you REALLY desire, but I didn't enjoy all of the extra work required (that no one tells you will be required) to get certain features up and running as advertised.

*shrug* It can be argued that there is nothing more pathetic than a cyincal anti-fanboy. Given a choice I would rather be happy and excited about things in life, rather than bitter and angry.

At the end of the day there are those that are going to like things you don't like. Are going to be excited and impressed with things you aren't. Nothing you say or do will change this fact. However it's still your choice HOW you react to this reality of life. It's still your choice to spit venom and purposely try to bring someone else down. That is still the type of person you have chosen to be.

Very well said.

Offering negative opinions about a feature or product is fine. This board wouldn't be nearly as interesting if we didn't have opposing views to discuss. But then we have the people who come in here guns blazing, dishing out insults and put-downs. The more enthusiastic someone is about an Apple product, the worse they get it. That's not offering opinion, that's being an arse. And I gotta wonder... who are these people? They are so anti-Apple, do they even own iPhones? Did they sign up for a MacRumors account just to flame others? After four years of the iPhone being on the market, are you REALLY still wasting time bitching about what it doesn't do? To those guys, let me just say that you are in the wrong forum. Yours is over here: http://androidforums.com/

This is what I find incredibly irritating about internet culture. For some reason it's necessary to be cynical and snarky about EVERYTHING (see Engadget articles and the cesspool they call "user comments"). Positivity and excitement are frowned upon, be it for books, movies, or technology. The more popular it is, the more cynical, snarky, negative remarks leveled at it.

It's baffling, disturbing, and ultimately points to something dark within human nature.

As a friend of mine once said, "the internet is for two things, searching for things, and gossiping about the things you searched for."

It's also the anonymous nature of the internet that allows people to interact in ways they never would in reality. Which is why various commentary on Facebook tends to be civil.

I jailbroken my iPod touch and iPhone in 2008 just days after I got them. I watched YouTube videos and was in awe even when the App Store just barely opened. Kudos to the dev team.

What this update did was improve it enough where I don't have to jailbreak it anymore. Maintain its pureness. I'm content with the new features. I was very much into theming and changing the sliders and such, but not anymore.

Maybe I can still JB if I get really bored, but I am no longer eager to do so.
