no matter how the new imac will look, the thermal will suck for sure, because design > function no matter what jony says

In a word... UGLY!!
Apple isn't going to disclose beautiful designs in a patent application.

The concept is intriguing -- iMac pulling in some of the ideas from iPad Pro's Smart Keyboard. The keyboard and trackpad will most likely attach to the iMac magnetically, and charge themselves that way.

If you need more flexibility, you can pull keyboard and trackpad out.

I also like that the logic board is no longer part of the display. The design should improve airflow and reduce dust build up.

Imagine your keyboard or trackpad stop working, then what? You bring your whole computer in? Just a patent, at the end of the day - nothing will ever come of this. Apple, just give us an actual new iMac.

Same exact situation as 65% of all computers sold today. Besides, everybody except Apple delivers primarily through on-site service. Apple cheaps out and makes you drive to a store.

The keyboard looks like it magnetically attaches to the iMac, similar to how Smart Keyboard attaches to iPad.

l can see Apple eventually getting to the point where iOS is mature enough to use your iPhone or iPad as your desktop OS. Just dock it in something like this and it will also serve as your desktop OS. They will just let MacOS die a slow death and stop providing updates. Typical Apple "no comment" on software they no longer plan to invest in long term.

I don’t need my computer to be a shelf. I put my iMac on a riser, so this design would be quite inelegant for my uses.

A nice concept ... CONCEPT.

On a serious note, I could see Apple making this if the company wanted to move into selling computers for kiosks and if everyone at Cupertino lost their minds.

well that's different. I don't think anyone would have suggested this design up until now. I'm glad they are thinking outside of the box though.

Since glass does not conduct heat, I expect this to be so artificially restricted that only toddlers will find it appealing.

Really? A 21.5" or 27" desktop-sized unit is much different than a laptop that slides into a backpack or shoulder bag - consider transporting that computer or the box that holds it on public transit.

Glass is 10x more thermally conductive than the plastic they make most computers out of.

Good job reading the second half of my comment.

There was an episode of Black Mirror, first series I think, possibly about a woman who's partner died and he was a robot? Something like that. Anyways, in that episode they had some devices that looked similar to this idea and I remember looking at them at the time and thinking, "yep, that looks like a future iMac design". Good to see art and life still playing a game.

Everyone complains apple aren't innovating then complain when they do.

I know. Be careful what you wish for. People have the short sighted notion that innovation is when they get something that they like. Just as often, innovation is revolting to a lot of people or to just about everyone. Failed innovations are innovations nonetheless and there are far more failed innovations than there are successful ones. Every innovation is introduced with a large chance of failure. It's only in hindsight that an innovation is viewed as a slam dunk. As much as people talk about change being good, most people are reluctant to embrace it when they get it.

They don’t want to “give away” any features of any new product in the patent filing, so the artwork that accompanies patents is usually chosen specifically because it represents the patent being filed while absolutely not representing the new product.
