Neat! In sci-fi these are always transparent, which must be terrible for usability/ergonomics. But it sure looks cool.

I sometimes wonder if Apple are just trying too hard "just to innovate".
The Mac Pro 6.1 and MacBook Pro touchbar are examples of that IMHO.

I would love to keep the current iMac as a base, but make the bezels far much smaller and massively decrease the "chin", deliver the high-end model with a 30" screen and put a *real* Radeon VII in there.
If possible, find a way to alter the height of the screen.
... and oh yeah.... more ports at the back please. 'k thx bye. :)

I prefer a traditional form factor but in a modern look, something like that

well this is as innovative as car prototypes, but they never come true because most of them are not useful at all, this is a very limited customized layout, as nobody works same way, trackpad/mouse, keyboard and screen must be detached, if not, you need a laptop, even then, external devices are required for long working hours. Apple fills thousand of devices like this every year, just because they are dreaming, but nothing else.

every manufacturer does this

Do they just hand out patents for an "imagined product" (for a patent fee of course)? Isn't some sort of a working prototype required? If not, sci-fi writers could easily hoard up patents by the hundreds.

it's really an ergonomic nightmare that doesn't improve on the current design.

The keyboard would have to be wireless to be functional as no one in their right mind would sit as close to the screen as would otherwise be required. And, if the keyboard is removable and wireless then you're left with a massive "chin", for lack of a better description, that is not aesthetically pleasing when the keyboard is removed and takes up valuable real estate on your desktop. As an example, currently I have a disk drive sitting on top of the bae of the stand so as to maximize desktop space. Others no doubt use this space to store other things. There's also the aforementioned issue of adjustability of the screen angle that would appear from the patent to be somewhat challenging and/or lead to the use of the types of materials in the Galaxy Fold, in the upper "chin" area, that are prone to scratches and other damage over time.

The size of the stand / component enclosure also appears to much bulkier than the current design of the stand and again will take up more desk top real estate than the current model.

Ergonomically and aesthetically this is a step backward imho. I think its safe to say that John Ivy wouldn't approve.

Relax. It's simply a patent application. It's purpose is not meant to preview upcoming Apple products.

Apple has all kinds of fanciful patents for imaginative devices that will likely never come to fruition [...]
Well, it depends. If it's a device that pushes you to contract services and work on the cloud, it's more likely it will come to fruition. But if it's a device that empowers individuals, then they think twice before releasing it.

Can we imagine the shipping problems on top of the fragility in use? My last few deliveries have given me boxes that are already open due to the handling by the shipping companies. Would any of that change?

How many time have you dropped yuor current iMac? I mean seriously?

This is exactly what I thought. Like people normally drop their entire computer on the floor and expect it not to be damaged 🤨

iMac drop test videos coming to YouTube in 2021 😆

Ummm…. No. Why not just make a nice screen, and have it 'hologram' an adjustable virtual keyboard onto any surface in front of it, along with a 'gesture type' virtual mouse!?

Everyone complains apple aren't innovating then complain when they do.

You may call this innovation, but I certainly don't.

I’ll first need extendible ‘go-go-gadget-arms‘ before I could use it. In other words. That’s too close to my face. Nah. Not for me.

If they stay away from cramming laptop GPU's and chips in it that throttle the speeds down, maybe it wont be so bad. Its too tempting to just cram a macbook pro in it and call it a day. If you want something pretty to look at spend that two grand on remodeling the room the iMac would have gone in instead. Also, the mouse wont be included with this. It doesnt look like it belongs with a computer like this. You'll have to buy it separately.

I'm all for innovation but this makes zero sense.

It needs to be flat and without the curve so that (a) it offers portability and (b) the keyboard is not reliant on integrating with it.

Designing a curved glass computer with an after-thought box added to the back and then a keyboard added to the front just looks like awful, ill-thought-out design.
