What everyone seems to be missing is that Apple doesn’t get a cut from gambling apps. There aren’t in-app purchases, you just deposit money with the sportsbooks…

I fully expect to see ads for scam apps that are fake clones of the real ones. Apple has done basically nothing to stop that - I was looking a couple of months ago for 'the room' and had to wade through several fake apps to get to the real one.

Why isn't gaming a restricted category? Anything that's 18 and over only should never appear unless both users and the app page owners have opted in.

WTF is this Apple?

I feel this year has been such a weird year for apple with lots of faux pas across their releases from software bugs to hardware hit and misses compared to previous years. Is it just me noticing or is it that more people have been reporting the issues on social media and news outlets etc. I remember when bend gate (or flex gate?) was the only thing we used to talk about back in the day..😄.

Tim Cook made iPhone 14 lineup stupidly expensive in europe, iPad lineup is a complete mess and they raised prices for them and older iPads. Tim Cook raised prices for their services and now ads in App Store.

At this rate Im looking forward to Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, as Im not luckily glued into Apples ecosystem.

WTF is this Apple?
Not an App Store related ad, but that reminded me of an ad that popped up a while back on a game my daughter was playing. Jenny McCarthy talking about making money playing Solitaire. Yep…definitely a relevant ad to show in a kids game 🤦‍♂️

Not a fan of this change in the App Store. At all.

I wonder if these ads are a response to the prospect of Apple losing a chunk of commission as a result of the DMA?

If Apple are forced to forgo a significant amount of revenue from in-app purchases, they have to make it up somehow.

Its interesting that some people have also observed that Apple are becoming more like Google, but this would be a natural consequence to EU regulation and an alarm that a number of people have rung.

If Apple is going down the path of Google then there is really no point in paying more for their hardware. The best thing about Apple has been their ecosystem. While I can avoid the App Store for the most part, I won’t be so forgiving if they place ads on my iPhone and iPad. After all Apple isn’t a starving company. This is just slimy and detestable imo.

I don’t think promoting gambling is even allowed in all but 1 states here in Germany.

Also „you may also like“ seems completely misleading as anyone can just buy a spot. It should be limited to the same category at least like wtf
Do you see gambling apps being promoted?

This is the criticism of having ads in the App Store, it’s effectively paid product placement, regardless of context.

But alas, the App Store will need to continue to generate revenue once the DMA goes live.

The truth is we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer. If our customer was our product, we could make a ton of money. We’ve elected not to do that. We don’t –

Our products are iPhones and iPads and Macs and HomePods and the Watch, et cetera, and if we can convince you to buy one, we’ll make a little bit of money, right? But you are not our product.

You are our customer. You are a jewel, and we care about the user experience. And we’re not going to traffic in your personal life. I think it’s an evasion of privacy. I think it’s – privacy to us is a human right.
