Can someone explain why the App Store needs ads? What is the point? Who benefits?
1) Apple's App store revenue may have seen a decline recently...

2) The point of ads is to make up for the revenue shortfall

3) This benefits Apple and their shareholders

Can someone explain why the App Store needs ads? What is the point? Who benefits? Are developers actually seeing an increase in downloads and purchases because of ads in the App Store?

Apple benefits from the ad revenue and potentially increased commission revenue from in-app purchases tied to some of the ads. Advertisers potentially benefit from increased business and, if not, they won't be advertising for very long.

However, if it is determined that these ads are hurting Apple's bottom line in other ways (e.g., enough people are turned off by the ads and start buying competitor phones instead) then Apple may decide to make changes.

And IF Apple must have ads in the App Store could they be a bit more intelligent about them? I just saw a screenshot of a gambling addiction recovery app that had a casino add at the bottom of its listing. 🤦🏼‍♀

Hopefully they will become more intelligent about them, over time. If enough customers (iPhone buyers, app developers, etc.) complain about "inappropriate" ads, it could push Apple to make changes. However, Apple's dominant position in mobile OS means there's not a lot of choice for customers.

It’s like the Google play store now…
I don't see ads in *my* Google PlayStore.😲 Maybe it's because I've got an effective, root-level ad blocker.🥳🥳 Pity Apple makes it neigh impossible to gain root access😠, much less allow root level ad blocker or firewall.😐
These app developers should build their own platform and AppStore then.
App developers did build their own AppStore: Cydia. Apple won't allow it on iOS.

Epic wants it's own appstore, but again, Apple don't play that.

If--*IF*--the ad is some way relevant to what the customer is looking to download, then it makes sense. If someone wants to download a match three game, showing other match 3 games would be relevant. Even then, it shouldn't be an ad. It should be top user rated apps in that same category.

I don't see any point in casino ads.

I don't see what the problem is. It's no different than going to the super market and having an employee shove gambling and casino ads in your face. Think of it like how a super market will "place indulgencies next to necessities (eg. candy next to water) and/or place items directly in the line of travel, so that you must look at them."

Looking for an app to help manage your finances (a necessity)? Now you'll see an ad for a gambling app to cater to your indulgencies. This is totally normal, right @vegetassj4 ?

Ummmmmm…..I was agreeing with your point, but using the grocery store example as a way to show how they do it without tech technically using ads. Never said it wasn’t a problem. I Cant stand it.

If Apple is insistent on including ads, they should allow the user to curate what ads they want. This push into Gambling in all facets of society is wrong and I would say even damaging. Gambling addiction is a serious issue but I feel like the sports world and now companies like Apple isn't taking that seriously. I hope in a year or 2 it goes the way of Alcohol and tobacco ads.

The problem (from their view I'm sure) is that they know full well what a huge percentage of users simply want "No ADS!!"

It was part of the quality draw to Apple products and their ecosystem to begin with.

That's what makes this increasing AD creep such a massive violation of trust and expectations.

That's why I prefaced it with the whole "if apple is insistent..." comment. I don't want ads either and it sucks that what we pay for premium products and that trust of privacy is now going away because of corporate greed. However, if it was inevitable that ads were coming (And people still buy Apple products, it's not like the company is going bankrupt after the earnings call tomorrow), being able to say no to certain kinds of ads (like gambling) should have at least been an option.

Precisely.

The Steve Jobs Apple would have never allowed this to happen.
The Steve Jobs Apple almost did allow this to happen, but even worse.

And that patent has his name on it.
And he had been trying to do this since the late 90s.

Apple's profit margins. No Apple customer should defend it or really be happy about it, yet some are. Who likes ads, except those making money off them?
The advertisers and developers/companies also make money off the ads. A company doesn't run ads if it doesn't think it will benefit its business. If I was a developer and trying to get people to buy my product (an app), I'd consider running an ad.

Even then, it shouldn't be an ad. It should be top user rated apps in that same category.

The existence of a list of top user rated apps is a form of advertising. It might not be a direct paid placement (although could be indirect through vote manipulation), but it's still a way for apps to be promoted by Apple and users. Again, that is advertising.

Note that in no way am I defending these ads or paid ads in the App Store. I'm simply commenting on the existence of ads.

Why is Apple not (also) advertising for tobacco? Like gambling, is made addictive, ruins lives etc... etc...
I assume tobacco companies are willing to pay top dollar to advertise on a "quality" platform like Apple.

Curious. Apple allows gambling apps in spite of gambling being addictive and highly destructive for many people, yet it bans porn apps. Apple really is sinking into a run-of-the-mill mediocre money-grubbing company.

Smartphones, social medial, streaming services, etc. can also be addictive and destructive to some people. That doesn't stop Apple from not only accepting ads for these products and services but selling/providing them too.

The question becomes, where does one choose to draw the line? For Apple, it seems that gambling ads are ok but pornography is not. At least for now. Rightly or wrongly, society is more accepting of gambling (lotteries, casinos, betting, bingo, etc.) than pornography.

If there is enough backlash, maybe Apple will change their minds here.

Just that Google Play doesn’t have gambling apps ads. If you don’t have an Android to test it just go to play.google.com and search for any app you wish: you won’t find ads there.

That’s what is sad, Google lives from ads and even then they don’t pull this scummy move

Google does allow “gambling” ads, at least under certain circumstances.

The next step is to charge a subscription fee to NOT get ads. It's a scheme that has been demonstrated by innumerable companies. It's only a matter of time until Apple offers such an "innovative" idea to the world.
Funny you should say that. Websites that have forums used to be the same. No ad's, then slowly introduced ad's and now they charge a monthly fee to not have ad's.

Capitalism! I get it. I don’t like sports betting, but I don’t begrudge those that do. I don’t usually complain about situations where I am not the target demographic, but gambling ads are just so obnoxious.
