Am I the only one that has noticed that this isn't an iPhone 6? Looks like a staged photo for a news article to me.

When this is implemented into stores where people are able to pay standing next to each other (so numerous workers serving clients/taking payments) aren't you worried about the machines getting confused? I.e. U end up paying the persons bill that is beside u because their machine picked up your NFC data before ur machine? Get what I'm trying to say?

This site has got to be the most ridiculous place on the web. Never in one place have I seen such a bunch of self righteous douches.

I was rather shocked when they announced, to considerable applause, that McDonald's was on board with Pay.

Steve would not approve.

You have to be within 3cm of the reader for it to pick up anything.

Paywave is "always on" (no fingerprints) and you never hear about this sort of thing happening.

I am sure this system is in the interrim until the get outdoor kiosks. But the real question is, how does how you LOOK ordering really matter? If you are willing to shop at McDonald's, I am guessing you probably couldn't care less.

The McDonald's nearby used to have a swipe terminal mounted outside, but it never worked right, they finally removed it.

Jack in the Box has one that works alright though.

Oh I don't know, I often hanker for a double sausage McMuffin on a morning :-D

I refuse to touch their breakfasts. The biscuits always feel like a rock.

BK all the way! (Although the one nearest my house always has funny tasting tots. Oddly enough, I never go there as it's the least convenient for me :)

Occasionally I do want a Double QP - and their fries are better.

That appears to be the exact same terminal that they use over here. They have a handle on the back of it so it's easy for them to hold it out. I just "wave" my wallet and it's all done within a second.

Those are Ingenico PIN pads, I see them all over here in the US, namely at O'Rielly auto parts, they have chip & PIN and NFC too, so that tells you something there.

I hope McD's gets new equipment soon, preferably the same Ingenico units found at European McD's and O'Rielly in the US.

Ingenico terminals aren't that uncommon in the US, See: Certain Walmarts, and all Home Depots (which is the larger screen version of the IPP pin pad seen in Europe, and the aforementioned auto parts store to accommodate electronic signature capture). Most other stores went with Hypercom (used to be an Australian brand by the way, and then moved to Scottsdale, AZ) or Verifone (every country has Verifone terminals somewhere, including the ones in McD's US)

London cabbies have the same Verifone PIN pads as Subway restaurants in the US, AND YES THEY TAKE NFC TOO. The smaller Vx PIN pads are much better suited for drive through than any of the MX series, which is designed to be fixed to the counter... As seen in this ridiculous picture.

You don't have to sign at most fast food locations. Why wouldn't you just use a credit card? It's honestly easier.

Bro I'm 9% body fat, if I want to eat a large double quarter pounder then by God I'm going to....in fact I think thats dinner tonight!

Well enjoy all those trans fats clogging your arteries. At least you only have 9% body fat. That will help a ton when you have a heart attack at 40 years of age.

McDonald's is the type of food I eat if there is absolutely no choice whatsoever nearby or at an airport because everything else is sky high expensive. Its rubbish food at the end of the day but appears to be hugely popular for reasons I'll never understand.

Apple should make a mint off this venture though so good luck to them. :)

That's hilariously ridiculous! Lol glad SoftCard and Google Wallet don't make me do that. I just enter a pin and hand my phone to them to be scanned inside.

I wonder how many people will drop their iPhones onto the road trying to pay for their big macs

A lot for sure. And pandemonium will ensue for sure.

And I know when I've gotten a groupon on my phone sometimes the employee at the location has had to physically take my phone and run it themselves. Imagine if Mcdonalds employees, mostly at the drive thru, have to do that. A lot of people will go nuts. They don't like people touching there phone, especially strangers.

goofy? ive used google wallet for almost 2 years to pay at all sorts of places. whats goofy is how much some of you worry about what other people think of you

I've noticed the readers at Whole Foods for about a month or so but it seemed silly to me for credit cards. Hold your credit card up to the reader or just swipe? I rather swipe.

Anyway, Apple Pay isn't really that big of a draw for me but I may try it at the few places I go that have it.

On a side note, when at Target today I noticed that their new systems are made for chip and pin cards and don't seem to have any NFC features. That sucks because Target JUST replaced all of these POS terminals this year, meaning it's highly unlikely they would be changed again so soon.

The terminals that Target just installed are the top of the line VeriFone's and have NFC built in. So there is hope. Note that Target is one of the launch web sites for ApplePay and was the site demonstrated in the keynote.

As to other stores for those that are interested, most all major US merchants use VeriFone or Ingenico terminals. VeriFone has an add on NFC unit (that's what is shown in the pic on the OP at the McD Drive thru) for all of the units they have sold for the past few years. The newer Ingenico's have NFC built in.

I've surveyed all of the major US retailers that operate in my area (Ctl FL) and have not found any that could not implement AP if they wanted to. If the demand is there the accepting stores count will grow fast. We should note that many stores will have to change their terminals by this time next year to comply with a newer card industry security requirement. That would be a great time to add support for Apple pay.

I noticed that Arget was demonstrated, but just the online version. I figure just about any retailer can implement that because it doesn't involve thousands of POS terminals. But hearing that most retailers will need new hardware soon or already have it makes me feel better.
