Debit cards won't work elsewhere unless you say "credit". Canadian debit is different than our debit.

If your credit cards weren't working, can you explain more?
We tried our debit cards as credit and debit with the PIN, and they didn't work at the stores. They did work at the hotels and taxi we used in Vancouver, BC.

A call to our bank (we were at London Drug) showed that we either had to temporarily not have fraud protection on the card to use it there or get cash from an ATM. We opted for the ATM and got $300 from it. However, back to London Drug, I looked at my iPhone, and said, "oh yeah, I have the Chase card on there" and used that, and it worked like a charm!

The funny thing was that Vancouver, BC is 110 miles from my home, and is "out of area" but Charleston, SC is 3000 miles away and there are no problems. Yeah, I know, across the border...

QR codes are the future.

Said the guy that wrote that book a few years ago that I saw at the Barnes and Noble on the 70% off rack.

I was there to get a Starbucks... With Apple Pay...

So sick of reading about WalMart and QR codes. I mean really - QR codes in 2016 when an option like Apple Pay is so readily available? The blatant disregard for consumers in this situation is disgusting.

But look at the millions they spend on politicians that want to 'Take America Back' to the Walton's TV shoes!

Goodnight John Boy...
[doublepost=1478211682][/doublepost]
And I'll continue to not shop there.

Even if they DID support ApplePay...

I can't believe the Cubs won the World Series before Walmart supported Apple Pay.

ApplePAY is a 'well known' liberal plot...

WalMart preys off their idiot customers. They rape them, and fund politicians that rape them and play them for suckers. Soooooooo... This announcement will be like announcing the second coming (again) for their die hard customers...

WalMart probably leads only DealDash in their minds for 'great shopping places with awesome deals'!

I heard Samsung has a cool method that does not depend on Samsung pay and no one even needs to agree to take it. Is this true? My credit card does not accept Apple Pay so I cannot use it anyway. But if I did a lot of it would potential go to Walmart. I got kids.

And no one is going to use this weird method. If it's not seamless it's toast. If I have to do anything taking more than 5 seconds it's not going to work.

Yes, Samsung uses a MSI chip that duplicates a magnetic swipe if no NFC reader is detected. Works pretty well, although all the cashiers tell me it won't work and they stare at me annoyed when I do it anyway. Doesn't work at gas stations though since the strip is buried in the machine.

In the U.K. Asda, which is a Walmart subsidiary has Apple Pay. In fact all of our major supermarkets support Apple Pay

Yeah it's been mandated in Europe, which is why ASDA has it. Walmart is never going to here as long as it's not required unfortunately.

I actually wouldn't mind paying 1 cent on each dollar spent to the stores for the convenience. Then Apple should pay the stores that money to entice everyone to get on board.
It's disappointing that it's still a guessing game when it comes to Apple Pay after these many years.

How did you manage 85%? I kept track of it one month and found at the end that only a third of my transactions used it--and this is with me trying as much as possible to use it. I can totally see why a lot of people simply wouldn't bother.

I pretty much shop exclusively at Apple Pay accepting establishments. I get my groceries at Meijer and a local grocery that accept it, the convienence store(s) I go to take it, if I get fast food I typically go to Panera or McD... the only exceptions to Apple Pay I can think of are Shell, the car wash, and Kroger (but I go to Meijer anyways).

There are some small local businesses I frequent that are chip-only, they and most sit-down restaurants make up that remaining chunk of non-AP payments.

I'll excuse the condescension. They aren't using tokenization. The barcode is tied directly to your credit card which is stored on a server of a new and untested company. If Target can't store my credit card number correctly, I'm not trusting some WalMart partner company.

The topic of this thread is Chase Pay, which I believe uses tokenization.

( I know it does for online transactions, so it seems likely it does the same thing here.)

Re: Target. Account numbers were stolen by a malicious POS terminal software update, not by a server data breach. Still, tokenized account numbers would've been unusable.

Walmart is only doing this, because they don't want to have to pay Apple. But the QR code payment, which I also just saw a BMO bank ad last night highlighting how NOT easy it is to use QR code based ATM's, is so behind the times, I can't believe anyone even considers it a viable thing.

No. You've got a major misunderstanding of how Apple Pay works. Merchants don't pay any additional fees tohave Apple Pay. The bank pays Apple a tiny amount per transaction which is offset by the greatly reduced fraud. What Walmart doesnt want to give up is your information that they get when you don't use Apple Pay. They want that card and other info.

The tokens are encrypted and one time use only. Target breach was via HVAC system vulnerability.

Awe Walmart, stop stamping your feet and throwing a trantrum and just accept Apple Pay! It's way better than any other method of payment out there. Just. Accept. It.

Just because, I configured Wal-Mart Pay on my iPhone and tried it at the cash register. It read the QR code from the terminal, but couldn't figure out what to do with it! I asked the cashier how it works and she had no idea either. She told me no one uses it. Amazing. What a waste of time and effort on Wal-Mart's side when they could have just chosen Apple Pay.

Walmart + QR-based optical payments... Ah hah ha ha!

Yet more proof that Walmart isn't really focused on customer satisfaction.

Pay Apple? No.

Pay more in Credit Card fees than in debit card fees? Yes.

Pay more in debit card fees than in ACH transfers? Yes again.

Oh, and information. Walmart wants to know what you buy without paying you any more incentive to get it than necessary.

Have you considered changing banks? Most credit unions give a superior set of benefits now and have way less in the way of fees.

Yes, I'm just waiting to purchase a new house and then I'm switching immediately to something along those lines you mentioned. :) and most certainly one supporting Apple Pay

I really do like Chase bank's services (when comparing to the other national banks), but this is so ridiculous on their part with Walmart...

Welcome to MR! Where it's accepted, AP works well. The issue in the US is it's very slow adoption rate with retailers. No matter how many banks support it, the effectiveness is diminished by it's lack of retail support. My comment was a joke by the way. There are way more than 6 US retailers that accept it. The total is now 14.;)o_O

It actually can be used at millions of places

I don't get the QR code hate. I live in China where QR code based WeChat Pay are available everywhere. Works great and is cross-platform.

Millions? Oh reeeeeeaaally?!?! Uh no. It can only be used at 14 stores and those stores are all in North Dakota. No one else is the US can use Apple Pay as of right now. Apple Pay is in beta testing right now in South Dakota and Rhode Island. If it's successful, it will be rolled out to 4 other states and 5 more stores. Hopes are that by 2021, Apple Pay will be accepted by at least 27 or 28 stores. Fact.

Yes I think by 2020 everywhere has to offer contactless regardless in Europe.

Don't know why Walmart won't just cut the cr-p and ditch the app!

Probably to monitor customers' habits?

I live in Arizona and yet I can use it everywhere I shop except for a lot of major stores (Walmart target Safeway etc)..and I know they can support it because they just got the chip terminals. A lot of mom and pop stores have it (in some cases unknowingly and they're surprised and say how cool it is when it works)....a lot of the times I'm not even the first customer so I know Apple Pay is being used!...at mom and pop stores to boot! Chances are if a mom and pop store can read chip, they also have Apple Pay. You have to instruct them to run it "like a credit card" and alls well that ends well. They're too afraid to decline it or question/yell at you because it's a mom and pop store- so every customer counts- so mom and pop stores are always more willing to learn new things when you teach them how to run it.

So does McD have a reader they can extend out the window, or do you usually go inside?
Walmart sucks and so does my bank who still doesn't support Apple Pay :/
I lucked out. Got my watch on release day, two days later the bank supported Apple Pay

Sainsbury's still doesn't. though have promised to. And not sure if tesco do outside m25 ( ditto asda? )

Target breach was via HVAC system vulnerability.
FWIW, it was a HVAC system contractor's account used to gain remote access to Target's network, but it was malware installed on the POS that scraped the card data from POS RAM.

You're really not familiar with the Walmart app, are you?

So does McD have a reader they can extend out the window
They do.
