As expected, Apple Pay launched in Belgium today, allowing bank card users in the country to take advantage of the contactless mobile payment system if their card issuer supports it.

In this case, the region's Apple Pay launch has taken the form of an exclusive partnership with BNP Paribas Fortis and its subsidiary brands Fintro and Hello Bank.

It's possible that other banks in Belgium will support Apple's digital wallet further down the line, but currently we don't have any specific details regarding future rollouts. Apple Pay can be used on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, as well as Mac models with Touch ID and Macs released in 2012 or later in combination with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Also today, Apple Pay launched in Kazakhstan. The rollout there comes to Eurasian Bank, Halyk Bank, ForteBank, Sberbank, Bank CenterCredit, and ATFBank cardholders, with Mastercard and Visa variously supported. Around 65 percent of card terminals in the country already support contactless payments, according to Forbes, with banks actively expanding the terminal network with NFC technology.

Belgium and Kazakhstan become the 30th and 31st region where Apple Pay is officially available. Apple Pay is also set to launch in Germany this year and is "coming soon" to Saudi Arabia, according to

Apple Pay first launched in the United States in October 2014 and has since expanded to many other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, China, Singapore, Switzerland, France, Japan, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Russia, New Zealand, Brazil, Poland, Ireland, and Ukraine.

(Thanks, Henry and Dmitry!)

Apple get your **** together and start Apple Pay in Germany finally.
This is rubbish! There‘s so much more profit to gain in Germany and we are now behind Kazakhstan…
Such a slap in the face of the involved stakeholders. But one could also spin it differently - obviously some other countries are making up ground fast, don't they?

#humiliation for Germany

Yeah, last time Germany talk about humiliation, it didn’t go well for the world /s

I know, right? How can it be, that some other country got Apple Pay before Germany? Unacceptable! /s

There will be time Apple Pay come to Germany. Right now, when you saying "now we are behind Kazakhstan" it sounds like you feel so much better... Do you know the Kazakhstan market so well, that you can say without doubt, that Apple would make much more profit from your market?

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Apple and banks in Germany have been mired in talks for almost 2 years because the banks are worried about their profits.

I worked at several German banks as a consultant and am not surprised. This was the most backwards oriented environment I have ever worked in - and I have worked in government as well (just to ensure I have some comparison). German banks are now boasting about functionality in their online portals that Dutch banks had 15 years ago!

I can´t even change my address of my German Bank account without sending a fax or a written letter. Some of these banks still live in 1985.

Still, The Netherlands has no Apple Pay either, but I guess that is more down to it not being a priority market for Apple. Last time I checked we don´t yet have TV series in iTunes and Apple News...

Germany is the hardest country in Europe to do business with. It's taken my company to three years to get Office 365 approved by the German works council!

Good luck to Apple for trying to get approval for access to German citizens financial data.

What do you mean payment systems? It’s just a NFC I believe. You can use any iPhone from countries that have Apple Pay in Germany. The restriction is from the bank/country not Apple.

I was in a Apple Store in Germany last friday. They don't accept any sort of NFC payment. Only credit cards, debit cards or cash. So you can't pay with Apple Pay in the german Apple Stores. It's silly.... I know
