I'm feeling this planned obsolescence is getting more aggressive with apple why not implement it on a 5s? they have a touch ID too?

In terms of iPhone and iPads, Apple Pay requires both Touch ID and the Secure Element, which the 5S lacks (it has Touch ID and the older Secure Enclave, which only holds Health data and Touch ID). Because of this, you could verify your identity, but your card data would still need to be stored somewhere. This is where an iPhone (presumably 6/6S/SE/7) or Apple Watch with Apple Pay will work in tandem with your Mac.

I don't see why they couldn't allow an iPad with Apple Pay to conduct the transaction, or an Apple Watch for in-app purchases on older devices, but that muddies the water a bit from the old matrix of "iPad = in-app only, iPhone = in-app and in-store, Watch = in-store"

Arguably, the 5S is an excellent older phone, but some of the features do require hardware, not just software.

Time for another 'I'm confused' question. Does this work on iPad Pro? I know I'm not about to use Apple pay in stores with my iPad, but with websites on iPad and mac it would be ace. Don't have a phone.

Edit - just found the final sentence of the story....all ok now.

No iPhone NFC secure element = no Apple Pay token to give the merchant. Also no latest Safari on Mac = no Javascript API for web Apple Pay. And of course the merchant has to get set up to support it.

It'll be convenient for some, but for others a device independent method like PayPal is still a good way to pay without giving card info to a merchant. PayPal is accepted on many/most websites, works on browsers other than the latest Safari, and doesn't require your Apple Pay enabled iPhone nearby.

Can we get an ongoing list of all the site/merchants supporting this? I feel like this is going to be a difficult thing to track...

So is this just for the US or can any country with Apple Pay use these sites and the apple pay button? I'm in Canada and would like to use it on sites but it's not made clear that people out side the US can use this.

On another note do we encourage sites to use this if they already have Paypal?

Surprisingly, I was able to use this on iOS 10 / watchOS 3 launch day. I bought an iPhone 7+ "Peel" case on their website (using my Mac on Sierra) and to my surprise they had a big Apple Pay button at checkout. A simple double click on my watch and I was done.

Nope, they don't even get your credit card info.

I have an older iPhone too (5). Also an iMac and Apple Watch. Which devices would allow for the use of Apple Pay online?

Can I even use Apple Pay at an off-line store? I assume so, since the watch allowed me to set it up.

Would the merchant get my cell phone number? I'm rather protective.
Not the phone number, but when using Apple Pay online, merchants may request a shipping address. The address can be edited by the user in the Apple Pay settings. In any case, before making the payment you will see a dialog box showing what data will be transmitted to the merchant. This will work similarly as it does today in apps that support Apple Pay.

At this point, your Watch will be the central point for Apple Pay. You can use it at stores that have NFC readers and it will "approve" purchases from your computer. I don't think Apple has built support for in-app Apple Pay on older devices (5/5C/5S), even if paired with a Watch (which probably could be possible to do, but is also probably a smaller minority)
