My transaction was for a soda and was $1.28. When I swipe my card on the same terminal for the same amount, I'm not required to sign. It's simply a clunky implementation by SuperAmerica. I sent them a comment to let them know my displeasure. I'm guessing they don't even know their terminals are doing this.

My grocery store here doesn't require a signature under $50 when using Apple pay
But does if over $50 using the same method.

I use my watch and don't need my phone anywhere near me

I don't think you understand how Pay works. Or credit card processing. You don't sign anything when you buy stuff online. And I make much larger purchases online than I do at the grocery store.

According to Apple, you might need to sign a receipt, depending on the store and transaction amount. For example, I've used Apple Pay at Petco several times without being asked to sign anything. However, they did require my signature one time when the transaction amount was over $200.

I suppose some stores require it for any amounts.

Yes, I already said that in a prior post. Just saying that it shouldn't be necessary, thwarts some of the security and is of no practical value, but Apple is acknowledging that the remnants of the old system may come up, probably due to an inability of the software to distinguish between an Pay transaction and a traditional one.

BTW- when I contacted the manager of the store chain, they said they were working on making Pay work but it would take a while to get updated software out.

Needing to be linked to my iPhone, which HAS TouchID and the code, is the same thing by extension.
You do realize that the link is just to unbrick the watch and put the card on it, right?

You don't need Touch ID, wifi, an iPhone, a cell data connection, or anything other than the watch itself to pay with Apple Pay.

One of the reasons I like buying with the Apple Watch, don't even need my phone with me... 6plus don't fit well in swim trunks.

I don't think she does.

Well, great! I may have screwed up SuperAmerica taking ApplePay at all!! I wrote them asking why I was required to sign for ApplePay transactions and I got this respose:

Thank you for contacting SuperAmerica. Our IT Department was not aware that the functionality was turned on. They are looking into this matter further. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Sincerely,

SuperAmerica - Customer Service

OK, fair enough. But you still have to put it on your wrist and unlock it with your code, right? Now if you are dumb enough to give your watch to someone else AND tell them your code to unlock it, then security isn't your main concern? Then you are just like the people who give your credit card to someone else and they just sign your name. Have any of you people ever been a victim of credit card fraud? When it happens, the card issuer just says "ok, we'll take those charges off your card". They don't look through all your receipts to see if they have a signature and then contact you to get a matchup signature so they can check it out. Signatures are totally unnecessary in the current days where no one checks them with a physical card signature anymore.

Last word.

You have to have it.

:D

Not always. Last last word. I've never signed in a taxi. And sometimes the amount is over $50 in a taxi. I've not had to ever sign at one grocery store but had to sign at another. Same amount of groceries. The need for a signature varies by store. And it's based on their normal credit card policies. Some stores require a sig. some don't. It's quite random. And totally unnecessary with Pay. I don't know why you think a signature that ANYONE can write is more secure than a code or a fingerprint. That's why chip and PIN cards are preferable and used in Europe. No signatures with those, either.

Why would you even sign your card? I never have.

Because that's what's in the credit card agreement. I know some people write "check ID" instead but that just leads to more hassle getting more cards out. People who don't sign anything at all are just asking to be frauded because if they lose the card, all someone has to do is sign your name in their handwriting and it's SUPER easy to use the card.
