So if you go out without your iPhone, and use Apple Watch to pay it displays the transaction?

I don't think so because notifications are mirrored from iPhone. I was taking issue with your assertion that if you have a banking app installed on iPhone, that'll get pushed to the AW. I'm saying that's not necessarily required. Amex (at least the cards issued directly from the company, not bank-branded Amex cards) will push notifications from iPhone to AW regardless of if you have their banking app installed on iPhone. Amex apparently achieves that through Apple Wallet.
So we both are right then in a way, you for the point that another app is not required and I for the fact that the Apple Watch by itself is not capable of doing that.
I hadn't even thought of Pay notifications until reading this thread. I've now updated my settings and will find out later if my bank uses them.
To be honest, I find them annoying and have them turned off especially given that Amex pushes notifications regardless of the method of payment made (Apple Pay, online purchases, or using the physical card). I wish I had an option of receiving notifications only when using Apple Pay.
