"Will the man on pump 4 please turn off your mobile phone it is a fire hazard"

Heard yesterday.

Can we expect more of those loud tannoy announcements from untrained garage employees with costomers shouting back

"I'm trying to use apple pay just authorise the pump will you!!!"

"Please turn off your mobile phone! sir I will not authorise the pump till you do so. Sir I am now calling the police"

I quite like First Direct. Brilliant customer service and a very good service all round.

Any recommendations of where to jump ship to if they don’t support apple pay in Feb?

It was increased to £20, but a lot of the originals still have it set to £15 - most McDs I go to are still at £15.

Is that true that the £15 ceiling on contactless is going to be removed with Apple Pay?

We'd hope so, because of the added security of Touch ID. It's anybody's guess until Apple announce it though.
I think America didn't have a limit to contactless anyway - is that true, anyone?

It's going to get removed anyway, with the ability to go online and ask for an online PIN (or signature, for Americans) being used instead. I don't know how far along the UK is on this.

I'm not sure what you mean?
I think all transactions go online in the UK.
Chip & pin doesn't have a limit, but contactless does (£15/£20 depending on the retailer). Contactless will occasionally (very rarely) ask for you to enter the card into the reader and enter the pin.
I think the limit is to stop somebody stealing your card, then using it contactless to buy a new TV.
Apple pay/Touch ID would be that authorisation to allow limitless transactions.

How far along we are? We're about as far along as we get the PIN in the post a couple of days before we get the card, and there's no limit to PIN transactions. Contactless is £20 though.

Believe it or not, we're about a decade in front of you guys with this.

Lidl who have supported contactless for ages now have a sign on their cash card machines at checkout saying surprise we now support contactless payment.

Yeah I've been using contactless payment in Lidl for quite a while now. Does that mean it should be included in the list of apple pay uk launch partners?

No idea but wouldn't be surprised because they don't do club cards etc so they have no reason to want your most private details and activities.

Thanks for the clarification guys.

Another hopefully simple one to answer. Do we think Apple Pay will 'just work' with all NFC terminals currently in operation? To me they use the same standard so should do.

On many things yes, I specifically stated on removing the contactless limit (which is long gone in the US).

It should, provided the merchant's POS system isn't doing something strange that causes an issue. (Of course your card issuer has to be on board)

Here in the US we've seen a couple instances like this such as Home Depot where ApplePay works fine with Visa and American Express cards but MasterCard cards get declined. I'm not 100% positive it's the POS at fault; but the evidence suggests it is. The very same MasterCard works when I used the card, the very same terminal works when I switch to use an Amex or Visa via ApplePay, and that same MasterCard works elsewhere on ApplePay.

Can't see it taking off here in all honesty.

Will be a gimmick that people use in Starbucks and McDonalds, and that's about it.

I always use contactless payment where possible. Something that makes a process easier isn't a gimmick.

Is it not the acquiring banks that implement this as this is who authorises the payments not your highstreet bank. If the merchant you are buying from is accredited with that acquirer then in theory they can support apple pay if their acquiring bank supports apple pay.

You will notice that on some chip and pin terminal's the name of the acquirer that merchant uses, IE elavon, worldpay, Barclays merchant Services (BMS) and then the merchant needs to have the contactless terminals.

I don't think its bank you bank with that plays any part in it really, you can load any card in to your passbook on your iPhone and it will store it and it will work regardless of who you bank with if the merchant takes apple pay.

I'm sticking with First Direct for all the reasons you stated. I'll just continue to use their contactless card like I do now. If they follow suit with apple pay, great, if not, meh.

If they are slow to adopt and adapt to a changing environment then they are not a company I want to provide with my business.

So, is there any more info on this? Has anyone at macrumors done some digging to see if Feb is being talked about?

I'll wait and see how it all develops before going through the hassle of changing banks.

I'm unfamiliar with UK banking. Can you not obtain a credit card from a different bank than the one you do most of your banking at?
