I'm unfamiliar with UK banking. Can you not obtain a credit card from a different bank than the one you do most of your banking at?

You can. You can get any account with anyone, as long as your credit check comes up good (simplifying. I'm sure there'll be some type of accounts that are difficult to get).
I wouldn't be too bothered if my bank doesn't support apple pay (would be mildly annoyed) because I use my credit card for pretty much everything. My credit card is with a different company than my bank accounts. If my credit card doesn't support it, then I'll probably switch that (Barclaycard.. But I'm sure they'll support it, because they already do in America and they're big on contactless already - pay tag, a sticker for the back of your phone, and pay band, a contactless wristband for making payments)

I totally can, but I am in my mid 20’s with a limited income and poor impulse control. I am so, so much safer without a credit card.

LOL. I totally respect that. "A man's gotta know his limits..."

Cool, sounds the same (essentially). Over the years I've accumulated a handful of cards for various reasons and I keep the oldest ones active due to depth of history. I think all of them support ApplePay.

has anyone in the UK with a UK AMEX card tried adding it to passbook by changing the region of the phone to US?

At least 4 of the banks which have supported ApplePay in the US from day 1 are also very well known and well used in the UK - AMEX, Citi, Barclaycard and Capital One. Perhaps they're waiting to get all the UK banks onboard before flipping the switch, grrrr

Of those four, only American Express is even close to well enough integrated for that to possibly work.

Citi sold most of their UK cards to Opus.

Barclay's is a totally different bank, realistically speaking.

Capital One is different in all IT ways.

If banks and apple had made apple pay available for Christmas they'd have seen an increase in profits from users. They missed a trick.

Do you think people will spend more money because of Apple Pay?

They did in the States. Did you not read the posts where they all rushed out to use it. Im sure a lot also went back to show friends. Its the nature of some people. You don't think we have the type in the UK who will see it as a new game type thing to play?

That is taking Apple fanboyism to the limit. :(

It just doesn't make sense to me to switch banks over what is essentially a credit card with a £20 spending limit (not exactly but you know what I mean).

If apple pay takes off in the UK all the banks will have to adopt. I'd rather stick with a bank with great customer service etc rather than move to an inferior bank for the sake of apply pay.

There is no wrong opinion here, just weighing in with mine. :)

Yeah it really will all just depend on how much someone wants to use Apple pay.
I probably wouldn't change banks but would change credit cards.
I personally want to pay for everything with Apple pay already.
I'm the opposite to you, as I'd rather have the functionality than the customer service (only because I rarely need to deal with them anyway).

But as you say, all banks will need to adopt. If that happens, then everybody wins.

I was at the cinema last night, had my cinema card in hand, my tickets, and my wallet to get my credit card out to pay for food/drink. Would be so much easier when everything is on my mobile - Apple pay to pay, and passbook to use my cineworld card discount.

Costa have just updated their app to add to passbook. So once Apple pay arrives, I can use passbook for my Costa points, and apple pay to pay. Can't wait!

I did post a while back, but posts get lost in new conversations!

My question was, will the banks that are using Zapp work on Apple Pay? Ie, I'm with Lloyds (Apple Pay) right now, but I will be moving to Metro (Zapp) soon. Will my Metro card work with Apple Pay even though they partnered with Zapp? I did see that Zapp said they weren't gonna try to ban Apple Pay and actually thought it would help them.

you did sort of answer your own question there, although we can't be certain until it's announced in the UK.

Thanks, I didn't realise that Costa had updated to support Passbook. Annoyingly, if you go to Passbook and then Find Apps, Costa isn't listed :-/ I wonder how many other apps are supported but not listed.

Last I looked/read costa couldn't use passbook because their point of sale tills used the old scanner/bar code readers and they couldn't scan the iPhone screen code. Maybe thats why they haven't updated their app as not all stores have new tills?

They updated the app back in august, adding the QR Code for you to scan in store.
Passbook was added just a couple of days ago.
When I was in Costa recently, they had point of sale notices saying you can use the app on your phone and scan that.

Quite a few. Ryanair are not listed as passbook supported but they do let you add your boarding pass to the built in passbook at the end or the online check-in process.

Only AMEX gives a positive error message.

I'd say that it would be unlikely that any banks partnering with Zapp would use Apple pay as well, at least until one platform out performed another. Store may very we'll be different though, some stores supporting Zapp may already have NFC and in that case it would be unlikely for them to turn off NFC this disabling Apple pay.

I'm puzzled though by all this CurrentC and Zapp stuff. It's all being marketed as ways for the retailers to avoid credit card fees. Unless they ban all credit card transactions, not just contactless ones, then I'm sure people will just opt to keep using their cards rather than a fiddly QR based app. After all, people use credit cards rather than their debit cards to do their shopping because they want to. The retailers can want to avoid as many fees as they want but I'm sure people who like using credit will still rather shop that way.

It actually looks like Sainsbury's implementation of ZAPP might be quite good - you'll be able to scan items with your iPhone as you walk around the store, pay on your phone, and just walk out! All without going near the checkout. :)

Of course, it would be nice if they support in-app Apple Pay for that...
