Seems like this means it's actually a minimum of a $2 purchase, if the $1 purchase can't be made using dollar menu items...

Doesn't seem like a good deal to me. Fast food is always buy-two-get-one-free... buy a sandwich and a side or drink, and get a side or drink for free.

It didn't work with my order today of a $1.99 McChicken sandwich. I was charged for the medium fries.

Don't really understand the negative comments. McDonald's isn't my cup of tea but it's hugely popular. This is something that advances people using Apple Pay, which I would ideally love to use everywhere.

Apple were positioning themselves as a pro-health company, whereas McDonalds are anything but healthy.

The promotion is limited to the United States.

Eastern Canada (Ontario, Québec, Atlantic) has it today for National French Fry Day with any mobile purchase above 1$ which basically means that you only need to buy a cold drink to get fries since McD sells cold drinks for 1$ during summer.
 
You can order and pay in the app and choose to pick up in store at the counter.

User error.

You just order AND pay in the app and you just get handed a receipt at the pay window.
“What? Are you from skip the dishes? Huh? What? Just pull out front and we will sort this out.”
The approximate content of the last time I used the app and tried the window as directed by the app. To be fair they did sort it out. However I only pick up at the counter or use a designated parking spot with the app now.
I tend to only go about once a month but the huge advantage of the app is for not having to convey the custom order for the others I pick it up for.

Also last time I used an offer it totally messed up the order.

The biggest problem I have with McDonald's is that they're such a large player in the food industry yet they seem to go the cheap route when it comes to food production:

Some corporate responsibility perhaps? I'm sure they do good things too, but perhaps try to do better in those areas that's lacking?

I wish my McDonald’s would get a better way for Apple Pay at the drive thru window. Now they have to hand the card terminal out the window and it usually doesn’t work. But maybe that’s the diet gods reminding me that I shouldn’t be eating it.

My 86yo mom has been using AP since day-1, first on her iPhone6, and then on her Apple Watch since the day that launched.

She goes thru the McD drive thru at least 2x per week and thinks management is pathetic. Their kids rarely know how to accept an Apple Pay payment, she mostly has to tell them to push some key on the register to activate the terminal, then they have to lean out the window w the terminal and the cord is too short at one McD.

I laugh because the Migros Chiciteria drive thru here has their terminals on an articulated arm that swings into the window and telescopes out to the car.

McD needs to get their burgers in a group and benchmark how to improve their clumsy process.

I can't count how many times employees have told me a business that I go to all the time doesn't accept Apple Pay. Then I have to explain to them I use it all the time there and sometimes tell them what to do. So frustrating.

The coupon makes the fries free and you pay $1 (plus tax) in cash.

Though the McD mobile app and the digital coupon McDonald's now knows all of this. Because the coupon is linked to you and your e-mail that you registered with them to use the McD mobile app.

Now explain to me how ApplePay changes this - what additional info has Apple though ApplePay "sold" to McDonald's that they don't already have?

FFS Apple isn’t telling you to eat there every day!

You can live a healthy life and go to McDonalds every once in a while

User info is being shared? No, that doesn’t sound right. I didn’t find that in any of the small print, anyway. Where did you see that?

People are already logged in and ordering through the McDonalds app, McD already knows who you are. What info do you imagine Apple would be sharing with an Apple Pay promotion partner?

Leaving aside whether an Apple Pay promotion partner is an Apple affiliated company—Beats, yes; FileMaker, sure; but McDonalds?—use of shared information can only be used as allowed by the privacy policy. Apple doesn’t hand over personal information just because someone wants it. They’re pretty specific about how they do use personal information:

Ok..... but without being an Apple “partner” - anytime use use a coupon from the McD app, even on an Android phone, McDonald’s gets all of the details of your transaction - even when doing a cash payment to a human cashier - by linking the coupons you use to your name, email address, and any other info that you provided during signup and matching it to the stores record of the transaction. They see how often you use the digital coupons and which ones, too. And this is all *without* ApplePay or an iPhone involved. Is this not the customer data you are presuming that Apple is “selling”?

So again, the small or fine print - the “partnership” - what data is Apple ‘sharing’ or “selling” or providing through the forced / required use of ApplePay that cash / mobile app coupon use doesn’t already provide? I mean I’m just thinking out loud here, but do you think Apple is sharing your previous unrelated ApplePay purchases, your credit history, your FICO score, your street address - what?

All info that is protected by federal and state privacy laws so Apple can't “small print” decide to share it. Heard of Facebook before? They just got fined $5 billion for the data sharing of user data. So only you can share it yourself because you entered it in the signup for the McD app or because they need a shipping address for the item you purchased.
 
Why offer this in the app but not at the register?
I’ve always wondered the same. Every single apple pay promo that has ever existed has only been available on in app and/or online purchases, but not on in-store purchases from the same merchants partnering with Apple for the promos.
