Actually I have the iPhone 7+ with Otterbox Commuter, and it DOESN''T work with the case on. I previously had the same issue with Nexus 6 and Galaxy S8+. The S8 had a flip tri fold case so you could get a bit closer, and it worked sometimes. Will try screen down. When I do it with the case on, the terminal responds with "please insert/swipe card" and the option to tap goes away.

You'd think it would not be an issue, but there you have it.

Where are you holding the phone in relation to the nfc reader? The ideal spot is the very top of the phone. Pretend like you are trying to tap the area above the camera on the exact spot where the nfc reader is and it will work every time.

Yep that did it! - and you have to get your thumb on the home button quickly or it asks for the card. I think that's where I went wrong previously.

Cases with Magnets?

I see a few cases out there that hold the phone in with a magnet (example). I wonder if that will interfere with NFC? It does affect the compass.

No it does not. I have one of the phone holders that utilizes the magnet and my phone works fine. No issues using Apple Pay and my compass is also unaffected. The magnet part is on the base part of the holder and there is only a metal disk on the back of your phone.
