Apple Pay works at WalMart!

If there are NFC readers at the regular terminals in your Walmart, then there will be at self-checkout. It depends on the store: some have NFC, some don't. But if a store has it, then it's deployed on all their POS terminals.
This is probably what is meant when Walmart says they "aren't supporting" ApplePay. "Supporting" pretty much means that they're making sure each and every store has it, and they just aren't in any hurry to deploy to all their stores right now.
Of course, Walmart is also part of a different partnership for NFC that competes with Apple, so if "not supporting" leads people to believe that their iPhone won't work in Walmarts that have NFC, I don't think Walmart management is losing that much sleep over the misunderstanding.
*JUMPS OUT SEAT* lol. walmart and gas stations are the places i shop most frequently. this is great news.
I can't confirm Walmart but I know it works a bunch of places not advertised as accepting Apple pay. Used it at at a BK and out of the way gas station. I'm inclined to believe it works anywhere that accepts NFC.
Of course it works anywhere that accepts NFC. This was announced during the keynote back in early September. Why are so many people suddenly surprised?
People are confused because Apple made it sound like they had to get a relationship with the merchant for it to work. Typical Apple PR but also typical confusing.
They are also confused because even people in the industry were /are confused. My merchant processors are confused. My POS vendors are confused. Many people who should know do not know.

The old Target terms do not have NFC (the orange ones) the new terms (the black ones) do but it not yet enabled. As Apple Pay is supported in app I bet it will be coming in the future.
Because during the keynote I was focusing on new iPhones and the Apple Watch I guess. Thought Apple Pay was proprietary and only worked at the locations Apple has announced. Why make a big deal out of their "partners" when it works anywhere that accepts NFC? Mixed messages coming out Cupertino.
My WM doesn't have NFC, which is a bummer. Now that I think about it tho, the one the other direction has different readers. Huh. Will have to try it.

The new Target readers (the black ones) support chipped and NFC. I do not think that either is enabled at this time. Target will be reissuing all of their in house cards as chipped soon as part of the post hack replacement plan.
It's called marketing and manoeuvring. Walmart knows very well that anywhere they have NFC terminals Apple Pay will work, and Apple knows that as well, but wants to highlight the partners that DO want to work with them to synergise Brand recognition, i.e. cross marketing.
Walmart especially (since they have tons of stores nationwide with active NFC terminals), and Best Buy and the rest of the MCX members are manoeuvring for their own proprietary barcode digital cash system meant to circumvent the entire credit card infrastructure. They can't technically say they don't accept Apple Pay because if any of their stores have activated NFC terminals, they do. Instead they say they "aren't supporting" it and go on to say they have a "better" system in MCX on they way. Misleading, but not lying.
I work at Target, I know these things... Technically they could have turned chip on while I've been off for 5 days though
They are actively testing CurrenC, I don't expect NFC to get turned on. It would be great if they would and I could use my RC with it. Although CurrenC wraps RC, cartwheel and emp discount in one QR code. That is kind of nifty.
