It's good that they're continuing to improve on it, but for me the Maps complaints have always been overblown. I've used Apple Maps since iOS 6 here in Colorado and have had very few issues with it- about as many as I had with Google Maps when it was the default. I'm sure there are some places where the directions are better than others, but it's always gotten me where I needed to go.

Guess you haven't used it outside of North America, it is garbage in the rest of the world. You can use Google Maps anywhere on the planet, and it will get you to where you are going without any issues

And who has the time to read a 200 page guidelines manual to read before becoming a freelancer?

What Apple needs to do is create a program like Google Guides to help improve their maps through crowdsourcing. It seems like Apple is really making this a lot harder than it needs to be with this type of platform. Sure, it's nice to be compensated but only a few people can complete 600 tasks a week!

They should make it a fun program with points and goodies that is free for the general public. From there, just watch Apple maps gain loads of new places, restaurants, shops, etc. Crowd sourcing has proved to be the best way to gain local knowledge. Especially when it comes to something like maps.

I hope Apple realizes this soon before Google Maps pulls too far ahead for Apple to ever catch up.

Agree, Google Guides is excellent. (I am one).

Main thing I find missing in Apple Maps is specific businesses. I can roll through Google Maps in a neighborhood and see most every business on the street -- but in Apple Maps, there are gigantic gaps.
I found that Apple Maps tends to hide business until you zoom in. In my area the default view shows only 2-3 business. But if I zoom in I suddenly see about 5-6 and if I really zoom in it's like 7+. Google tends to show you everything at the default zoom. I think that may be part of the issue. I think Apple could resolve that.

Capped at $324/week...minus $40 for gas. That'll get people motivated to improve Apple Maps.

Love my iPhone. Hate Apple Maps. Google Maps tells me the exact lane to be in. This is VITAL, especially driving in New Jersey, where there are constant lane changes and ramp exists around major highways. I also find that the Google Maps voice commands give me ample warning when a turn is approaching, while Apple Maps lets me know at the last possible second. Apple really needs to step their game up in this arena.

The only way to compete with Google now is to leverage and mobilise the iPhone user base. Not sure if Apple is making any meaningful effort on this front. Contractor is not the way to go.

Obviously Google had a head start. But I don't know if Apple is allocating enough resources to catch up. They've got bigger and more pressing areas to focus on.

That said, not every company can be good at everything. It's not unlike Google with hardware. The refinement comes with time.

Have noticed Apple Maps is much better for me than it was originally. However if I'm going someplace and I want the fastest route (at that moment accounting for current and expected traffic), as well as crowdsourced notifications of police waiting on the highway) then Waze has been my best option.

Apple maps UI + Google backend will always be the best solution. I know google is evil and all but just pay them the money. Instead we get inferior products from both of them.

Apple Maps is in a SLOW PACE...IT SUCKS it will take decades to reach Google Maps if they continue like this. The maps are just horrible. Google Transit, for example, is available in several cities in Africa...Apple Maps....I don't even need to say anything. They will NEVER reach Google if they support just 1 city per year.

Maybe people are unaware of this, but you can submit POI and correct errors. I've done a handful and Apple has fixed all of them.

Anywhere on the planet with no issues? Really... That's astonishing. Especially since many people chime in here from time to time saying google maps isn't perfect, either.

Apple Maps is for fanboy purists, simple as. It's a placeholder app for people who do not realize that better options exist - like Safari is installed by default.

It does not compare to Google Maps or Waze, either in accuracy or features available, and likely never will.

Imagine how much they could have improved the data for Apple Maps with the $3bn they used to buy Beats and "Apple Music"

The Apple Maps application with Google data was great. However, the issue wasn't about money. If I remember correctly, Google wanted user data, something Apple didn't want to compromise.

IMHO Apple chose to protect its users instead, by building/buying their own Maps application and data.

And that's admirable. Privacy is great.

But accurate map data is also great. Vital, even.

If you're looking for something on a map and it's in the wrong place... or completely gone... that's bad.

Reminds me of the phrase "You had one job..." :)

My experience of Apple Maps is that is absolutely, totally, completely, utterly, complete and utter ****. It fails fundamentally as a map and should be shut down under trade descriptions legislation. How Apple haven't been sued, repeatedly, for supplying inaccurate information on a consistent basis, baffles me.

You can report an error in the Maps app

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203080

You can report the issue to Apple through the Maps app. I did last week and today got notification that the issue was fixed.

Have you submitted a picture? I've submitted missing items recently but the only ones that got feedback saying it was added were where I took pics with the phone. I presume it's a corroboration of the GPS location in the photo plus proof the photo is pointing at what it says it is.

I did submit a ticket/report to them months ago and over a year ago before that I think. I included screenshots of where I was (blue location dot) and where the map pinned the address. I also added a screenshot of Google Maps with the exact same address pasted in the search bar with the pin right on top of my location showing that it is correct. I just never heard back.

I can always try again, but I don't bother since I don't use the service to begin with.

They can't even add multiple timers to the clock app. People who cook know what I'm talking about.

Right! Though I have found out you can set one on the Apple watch and it can run independently from the one on the iPhone. I usually end up using my phone and our Google Home to use for timers. Other than you know, the actual oven timer but who uses that?

I have to use multiple egg timers like a caveman.

I have to say Maps is by far the worst navigation app ever. Not only the interface is poor and simple but the directions are just plain limited.

As far as driving goes, Waze is absolutely the best right now for a road layout accuracy and useful information along the way. Maps in its current state is just a "better than nothing" option and it puzzles me how after putting so much time & effort into it, Apple are still struggling to get it right.

Question, what exactly do all those employees do at Apple?
I wonder the same thing. I'm not being snarky. Really. Apple has 116,000 employees (October 2016; per Wikipedia). Subtract the retail employees and you still have a TON of workers. I see those crazy numbers and I wonder how Apple isn't able to juggle the iPhone line, Mac line, and iPad line simultaneously.

Many organizations get unnecessarily bloated as they grow. Is that what has happened with Apple?

No doubt about it. Waze is freaking amazing.

I get so triggered when people don't take my recommendation to try it out. (No, I don't actually get mad, but as a fellow Wazer, maybe you know what I mean :D)
