Documents are quite nice, the one revealing the revenue earning brackets is brutal. Basically only 1% of US developers make a living from the App Store
You're not surprised though, right? Of all those thousands (millions?) of apps... most folks only have and use a handful. Pure numbers game -- like all other products on sale in any market.

As a developer, not surprised, still sounds brutal everytime anyone points how difficult it is to make a living in the App Store

Still, the general public is pretty ignorant about it

So? How many restaurants succeed? How many of those developers would succeed without the App Store? Who, exactly, granted everyone the inalienable right to earn a living in the App Store? You’re entitled to opportunity for success, not to success.

Flawed analogy. The lawn (the phone) does not belong to Apple. It belongs to a phone owner. It's the phone owner who needs to agree to install and app or an alternative app store. It should not have anything to do with Apple.
Where do the phone owners install it from , asking for a friend ;)

No word on whether developers are allowed to charge a lower price outside of the store?

Because if they are not, virtually nobody is going to use a third party payment processor. Users will take the path of least resistance and still pay through the App Store.

If I may ask a question, who handles the transaction if its the developer selling? Would I be correct in assuming that charge transactions buyer info would now be possible targets on somebodies home computer or laptop?

Please disregard if I missed that part of any discussion.

Wont use one anyway

If you are buying a subscription to something from the developer, then the developer handles the transaction (using whatever system the developer uses).

I'm just baffled by this 99 cent minimum complaint.

Look... I get that some developers are already pissed that they are "losing" money because of Apple's cut. Fine.

But do they really want lower prices so they can make even less money?

There's all those kids with $0.50 allowances who haven't a vbuck to their names...

I will only buy via the Apple payment system, I'm sure I'm not in the minority. I would rather pay a little more then having my CC info stolen.

Agreed.

But if developers will be allowed to use outside payment systems... will they at least have to show who is handling the payment?

Maybe a little "Square" badge or something in the app? Or a "Powered by Stripe" notation?

I've had no worries buying tons of little apps and utilities from the App Store because I knew Apple was handling the payment.

But it terrifies me to think about typing my credit card number into some unknown black hole.

It is a flawed analogy since while you own the phone, you don’t own the OS. So while you should be able to side load, Apple isn’t obligated to provide an OS that does that. You, of course, are well within you rights to jailbreak the phone and load your own OS or others.

I don’t have a good analogy for that.

If they are handling it, they are doing it on their own website. They may use a third party payment processor, or do it themselves. There will be no uniformity.

Just like today, where you can sometimes buy subscriptions to services on their own websites and also through the App Store.

I bet Apple is very happy about this, now they are bound by a court approved settlement agreement that basically keeps things the same

Do you mind if I set up a store and sell waffles on your front lawn? Or if I did that do you think you should maybe get a cut of the action?

Not at all. Do you mind if I dictate the ingredients, size, shape, taste..how I approve them first? I will reject most btw, and some I will promote. Others can be thrown out.
