I suppose it makes some sense considering the differences in charging. I assume Pencil 1 will live on until the base iPad makes the transition as well? That may never happen, considering they are value propositions.

That is going to be an extremely small percentage of users. It's all down to compatibility.

If you were previously interested in and bought an iPad and Pencil aren't you exactly the person who would be interested in the new ones?

Apple just forced you to update both rather than one or the other.

So much fragmentation now... I don't even know what-is-what anymore...

home button/no home buttons, /r/s/xr/xs, pencil 1/ pencil 2. headphone/no head phone... pro/not pro, lightning port/usb c....

If in doubt assume It Just Doesn't Work.

Not surprised. No reverse or forward compatibility, and bump the price up 30%.
Apple pushing the price boundaries as usual.

Courage.

Makes sense. Older iPad owners wouldn't be able to charge the new Pencil 2 as they don't have inductive charging. And new iPads don't have Lightning to charge the older Pencil.

Actually a joke honestly. Has nothing to do with charging on both they should work on both vice versa. They’re both the same other than charging them

It’s all down to taking advantage of the customer when they could easily have made the previous pencil compatible. Some people are happy with their pencils but don’t want to dish out another 120-130$ for another one on top of 800$

Or some may have bought a 10.5 iPad Pro along with a pencil in April :(

If you've just purchased the previous generation then I don't see why you'd be upgrading again so soon.

Yeah I’m almost certain the actual drawing tech is the same, so the old pencil should practically speaking be able to draw on the new ipad, if it werern’t for charging and pairing. But since the old pencil can charge on its own, that just leaves pairing. Apple could have made a way to pair the two, if not via an adapter connection then wirelessly—it is bluetooth after all—but I’m guessing Apple didn’t think it was in their best interest to allow that. I guess we’ll know for sure once someone is able to test pairing via a usbc to lightning cable and lightning male to female adapter. I have hopes but keeping them low.

The T2 Security Chip will prevent any attempts to bypass planned obsolescence

We own the 9.7 Pro, the 2nd Gen 12.9 and the 2018. Along with 3 pencils. After the keynote (we just finally watched) my 9.7 kid wants the new pencil. She’s bummed. We are on a wonky upgrade cycle, and she’s awhile out from a new iPad. The 12.9 does everything we want too - but I love the new connectivity.

Meanwhile, we have 3 perfectly good pencils (4 if you count the lost on), and it hurts to know anything new in the Pro line we buy can’t use it. And I wish my iPhone Xs Max could use the pencil too... I tap on it a couple of times a week. Oops.

Oh well, it is what it is.... I guess the new mini will have to

Now I really will think twice. I have the original iPad Pro with the Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. Upgrading those 2 as well costs another 300 bucks. So I will not.

Im surprised that most of the negative comments are directed at the pencil. I feel Apple is in a position where, they can offer new tech that wont be compatible with old or
Make the new pencil work with older models but not be as advanced. I can live with accessories not working with older models. What I expected more complaints on is the fact that they have somehow got rid of the notch.......yet its still on the iphone xs. And, ipad has usb c yet iphones have lightning. That is disappointing for me. If they got it right on ipad they should have been able to remove the hideous notch on the phone and added usb-c as well.

You’re right. Just honestly forgot about the iPad. I purchased it in April, and honestly forgot they were releasing one this year. I hate when that happens because it makes my device feel inserted, even thiuf

To be fair about the notch, there isn’t one cause the device has a bit of bezel still (about 4mm).. whereas the X variants have about 1-2mm

$200 for the pencil here in Australia. Yeah, no thanks Apple. I’ve had enough of your price gouging for the time being. Will be holding on to last year’s 12.9” iPad Pro, pencil and keyboard until they collectively decide to kick the bucket.

The pencil is nice but never again.
I can understand the new pencil not working with the old iPads but not the other way around.
Now my $100 Apple Pencil is forever tied to my OG iPad Pro and I'll have to rack that up to another loss if I buy the new iPad.
Why would I pay $130 for the new Pencil when Apple may announce the Apple Pencil 3 that works on OLED screens only, next year.
Man, I was so excited yesterday, now I'm destined to sit this model year out.

If it isn’t about bilking customers from their money, Apple should consider a trade-in for the pencils to show good faith.

i really hope they do. i had a ipad pro 10.5 and i just sold it to get the new one. and now i have a pencil 1 which cannot be used on the new ipad. i have to take out the money to buy a new pencil.

i really hope they consider the trade in as suggested by you. but i don't think they will.

Have you seen those trade-in allowances? Better to give it away and have a warm feeling.

I can see their dilemma in changing ports so a unified pencil was never going to be possible (it would be pretty confusing for the customer as well having features that couldn’t be used). Having said that, it would have been nice if they had just discontinued the old pencil and quietly re-released it with double tap. (and even better, allowed trade-in of old pencil for the re-released version.)

iPads and pencil depreciate a lot so I just wait and buy last year’s tech. If you’re patient you can pickup a year old iPad 10.5 and pencil for half off the initial purchase price. Thank you early adopters!

That's not necessarily true. There are products that charge your iphone, apple watch, and airpods all at the same time so an external charger wouldn't be out of the question.

this is what would have happened if apple respected its customers, unfortunately, they've shown many times over the last decade or so they don't :(

i would have bought clunky adapters for charging to use pencil 2 on my base ipad over the pencil 1.
or after i was pigeonholed into pencil 1 i would have bought an adapter to use it temporarily with my pro during my upgrade/transition.

not only is pencil 2 a sleeker pencil, has a button etc. but would provide a theoretical upgrade path for when i moved to a Pro rather than needing a completely new 2nd pencil
