I suppose it makes some sense considering the differences in charging. I assume Pencil 1 will live on until the base iPad makes the transition as well? That may never happen, considering they are value propositions.
That is going to be an extremely small percentage of users. It's all down to compatibility.
So much fragmentation now... I don't even know what-is-what anymore...
home button/no home buttons, /r/s/xr/xs, pencil 1/ pencil 2. headphone/no head phone... pro/not pro, lightning port/usb c....
Not surprised. No reverse or forward compatibility, and bump the price up 30%.
Apple pushing the price boundaries as usual.
Makes sense. Older iPad owners wouldn't be able to charge the new Pencil 2 as they don't have inductive charging. And new iPads don't have Lightning to charge the older Pencil.
It’s all down to taking advantage of the customer when they could easily have made the previous pencil compatible. Some people are happy with their pencils but don’t want to dish out another 120-130$ for another one on top of 800$
Or some may have bought a 10.5 iPad Pro along with a pencil in April![]()
If you've just purchased the previous generation then I don't see why you'd be upgrading again so soon.If you were previously interested in and bought an iPad and Pencil aren't you exactly the person who would be interested in the new ones?
Apple just forced you to update both rather than one or the other.
If you've just purchased the previous generation then I don't see why you'd be upgrading again so soon.
And all the hot wind about the notch on the iPhone X being iconic.
Yeah I’m almost certain the actual drawing tech is the same, so the old pencil should practically speaking be able to draw on the new ipad, if it werern’t for charging and pairing. But since the old pencil can charge on its own, that just leaves pairing. Apple could have made a way to pair the two, if not via an adapter connection then wirelessly—it is bluetooth after all—but I’m guessing Apple didn’t think it was in their best interest to allow that. I guess we’ll know for sure once someone is able to test pairing via a usbc to lightning cable and lightning male to female adapter. I have hopes but keeping them low.
All indications are that it will not. But once someone is able to test it with an actual iPad we'll know for sure.So the next iPad Pro will support the old pencil?
You’re right. Just honestly forgot about the iPad. I purchased it in April, and honestly forgot they were releasing one this year. I hate when that happens because it makes my device feel inserted, even thiufIf you've just purchased the previous generation then I don't see why you'd be upgrading again so soon.
To be fair about the notch, there isn’t one cause the device has a bit of bezel still (about 4mm).. whereas the X variants have about 1-2mmIm surprised that most of the negative comments are directed at the pencil. I feel Apple is in a position where, they can offer new tech that wont be compatible with old or
Make the new pencil work with older models but not be as advanced. I can live with accessories not working with older models. What I expected more complaints on is the fact that they have somehow got rid of the notch.......yet its still on the iphone xs. And, ipad has usb c yet iphones have lightning. That is disappointing for me. If they got it right on ipad they should have been able to remove the hideous notch on the phone and added usb-c as well.
If it isn’t about bilking customers from their money, Apple should consider a trade-in for the pencils to show good faith.
Have you seen those trade-in allowances? Better to give it away and have a warm feeling.i really hope they do. i had a ipad pro 10.5 and i just sold it to get the new one. and now i have a pencil 1 which cannot be used on the new ipad. i have to take out the money to buy a new pencil.
i really hope they consider the trade in as suggested by you. but i don't think they will.
The new pencils are cool, but this almost feels like an intentional move to punish people who bought either product before today.
There’s a lot about Apple’s recent decisions that honestly come across as taking customers for granted.
That's not necessarily true. There are products that charge your iphone, apple watch, and airpods all at the same time so an external charger wouldn't be out of the question.Makes sense. Older iPad owners wouldn't be able to charge the new Pencil 2 as they don't have inductive charging. And new iPads don't have Lightning to charge the older Pencil.
this is what would have happened if apple respected its customers, unfortunately, they've shown many times over the last decade or so they don'tThat's not necessarily true.
