The funny part is durability. Foldable displays are still soft enough that pressure from a fingernail can leave marks, so Apple couldn’t simply use a normal Pencil tip

I think this is the heart of the matter. As a person who used a Palm Pilot for many years and got really quick with the stylus you would wear out the touch surface so a replaceable protector was essential. With soft screens to support folding I would expect wear to be a real problem.

The whole reason we still have iPads is the pencil. If the iPhone also had one, the iPad Mini would become pointless and it would get cannibalized by the cheaper iPhone Ultra (which would maybe less than cost of an iPhone + cost of an iPad Mini). I think a pencil would be awesome for the iPhone but Apple doesn't want to kill the iPad mini.

I don’t think so and I think Apple does y think so either….here’s why, parents with 16 pros or 17 max’s aren’t going to go out and get little ten year old Timmy or twelve year old Tawanda that brand spankin new ultra huge screen iphone instead of iPad for them (remember current reports are saying ppl hold onto their phones longer so each year is less ppl looking to upgrade).

I think there’s enough of these cases where it adds up to each device (iPhone, Mac, iPad etc) truly has its own space and meaning for existence…

No Apple device is pointless or would be pointless if a pen were usable with ultra iPhone

I’m holding a mini straw right now, that’s less than the thickness of a 17e, about as thick as a iPhone Air. TBH it would make a great stylus to use for iPhone idk why it’s a trouble. I’d use a stylus for iPhone. Mainly to keep screen from getting dirty.

Give it time, I think a stylus will make it to the ultra but first Apple must master a folding screen with minimal creases that’s as durable as can be for years and years worth of hinge movements and varying temperatures…a stylus makes too much sense for a device that literally looks like a notebook, Apple could’ve went for the clam shell opening but chose book purposefully.

There's a reason, Samsung doesn't have one and Apple allegedly tried one with a broader tip (which probably offered hardly any benefits over a finger): That inner screen will scratch too easily.

Yet still to this day people go full retard in regards to Steve's comment about Styluses.

Anyone with basic comprehension stills can ascertain that Steven's comment was about being forced to use a styles to operate a mobile, since the competition back then, used resistive displays paired with ery small UI elements requiring the use of a fine tipped stylus. You were not able to use your fingers for quick and easy navigation, hence he mocked them.

It also had to do with him selling what he had to offer. The touch screen along with the UI on the first iPhone was revolutionary. Jobs was first and foremost a marketeer. He knew how to tap into the two or three messages that would make a difference to the user. He sold you on the belief that his products would help you do the things that were important to you. Apple lost that unique messaging ability when Jobs passed. Now we get Bento Boards with large print and a few numbers and names of products.

I think Apple Pencil support will eventually come to the iPhone Ultra, just as it did to the iPad mini.

For handwriting apps, writing with a finger is not as good as with a pencil.

Since there's a Samsung Z Fold8 Ultra, does anything think Apple would still name their foldable the iPhone Ultra?

And of course this tidbit from Gurman will make many wonder if the foldable iPhone will work with an existing Pencil on the inner screen.

I really hope it won’t be called the Ultra, for a few reasons, but mainly to let some air out some leaker/influencer egos.

I also hope there’s at least one or two surprises and unexpected features - the rumour mill / constant leaking has taken a lot of the fun out of events and product announcements.

My iPad mini 6 + Pencil 2 combo completely rejuvenated my creative workflow. Killer combo! Because of that experience, I’ve been quietly hoping for Pencil support for iPhone Ultra. And it’s gotta connect magnetically, or offer Find My support, otherwise…

Maybe we’ll see Pencil support in v2? 🤪

A stylus is one of the reasons I used a Samsung Note for years. It is very handy to have and use. But, they need to be stored inside the phone body, which is what Samsung did.

Yes, like the newton, the pencil was inside. I dont like the iPad pencil sitting on the side.

Agree wholeheartedly. If Jobs were still here, the Apple Pencil would almost certainly also still exist. The idea of replacing a student or employee’s messy stacks of pen and paper with a single digital tablet they can hand write reports or jot down maths equations on is a real and permanent tool in the modern world. It is not a gimmick. And it is not what Steve was referring to at all when he dismissed resistive touch styluses in 2007.

you are right, for example, on those PDA you had to use the style to press on the little button at the end of the scroll bar, using a finger a faster and easier those this kind of gesture.

If you need a device with a stylus, buy an iPad. That’s the play here, and I’ve been saying it for months. As much as Apple says they don’t care if they cannibalize their own products, there’s just no way this is being marketed as an iPad replacement.

But...a foldable can become a very useful business tool for someone writing up a quote or taking notes while talking. The list of possibilities goes on and on.

I have long wanted an iPad that would let me have a cellular conversation and, at the same time, let me do business, take notes, or whatever.

Don't be dismissive of a stylus. Most people, once they use one, hate to give it up. The problem with the pencil concept is that it is too large, and there is no place to securely store it on the phone. Apple could have made a rectangular stylus that fit inside the foldable.

I am very curious about the fold and no pencil is a deal breaker for me because I would consider the fold as an hybrid iPhone / iPad mini. But I would then need a pencil to be complete … as for losing it, I never did on any of my ipads so why now ?

Jobs wasn't mocking styluses. He was mocking the fact that they were necessary to operate the device's interface. It's strange that MacRumors don't understand this.
