For things that didn't require high power or fast data transfer speeds, I've always preferred Lightning. It seems like a much more durable connector.
It is. And they had a USB 3 version on the ipads so they could have introduced that version. It's sad they went and made a new connector for the USBC spec instead of just doing a version of lighting. Had zero issues with the port or the charger (discounting the cables eventually breaking just outside the connector) and in reality the connection was always solid. Unlike Usbc which on my macbook pro never felt secure... like most people asked for the magsafe back but the ones on my laptop had never needed that because any slight force will pull them out... blessing for forget the power cable.. curse using anything involving data such as an external drive because one bump and the connector is dislodged enough for it to lose connection and sometimes brick a drive if it was in active use... (thankfully disk utility managed to eventually repair it after playing around every single time...) so trully sad to see this connector gone

I wonder why USB 3.0 was possible already in 2016 for the first iPad Pro and why they just didn't move on with that to every iPad and iPhone. I am sure they could have upgraded it to 3.x Gen. 2 with 10 Gbps or even Thunderbolt too and don't have to wait until they are forced to use USB-C.

A lot of people say lightning should have died a long time ago, but my 2017 iPad still has lightning and still works.

My Magic Mouse is so old it uses AA batteries. I’d be grateful for a rechargeable lightning port on the bottom!

My Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad use AAs.

My 2013 IMac has Thunderbolt. Not 4 or 3 or 2. Just Thunderbolt. Drives my two 30” Cinema Displays just fine.

Can’t wait to buy for my M4 Mac Mini. Present day, here I come!

I also still have my 3G iPod with Dock connector. Never use it, but I have it.

It did its job well in a time when a similar connection was not available. I remember buying an iPad Air specifically so my iPad and iPhone had the same charger and I did the same thing when I upgraded to a USB-C iPhone and got a new iPad mini.

No it cares that you will throw it away, break it or lose it. This is planned obsolescence, (un)evolved.

Curious. I've never had one break.

My wife had a pixel 2 for six years; Charges just fine, on the original cable even. Our switch never had a port problem, neither has my years old laptops... the list goes on. Lightning had its time and place, but that's gone.

The one legacy it left, for me, is that I now absolutely despise proprietary cables and connectors. I don't want them, won't buy them, and won't use them. I was ready to ditch Apple if they didn't change.

I still believe the lightning "connector" idea was superior. When it broke it was the cable/connector that broke. With USB-C I've now had 4 devices break with the on device receptacle. That never happened in dozens of Lightning devices I had. it was the protocols and bandwidth that couldn't keep up.
I've had 3 lighting devices fail the same way, and it wasn't due to stress. At some point you need to apply downward pressure for it to work. All devices fail eventually.

With new cars and new airplane interiors standardizing on USB-C, this is a fantastic development. You really are going to be able to charge your phone with any USB-C cable anywhere. If they put a thunderbolt controller in the iPhone 17, I will buy it day one, full price

Yeah, too sad being able to charge all the electronic devices with only one port type...even being able to transfer with thunderbolt 5 speeds with that port type? What a madness! Damm it EU.
This was a non-issue for Apple product users until the EU forced Apple to transition. It was more of an Android fanboy talking point.

A user was ironically making the list of all the "last iphone to X" articles that might come out of this.
MR: literally doing it.

Doing away with lighting has been made possible in 2023. That's not innovation, and it's still USB2 under the hood.
Apple won't improve on USB2, just to spite its customers, because the EU forced it to ditch Lighting.

Also the switch to USB3 or Thunderbolt might make Apple phones useable without paying a 1300 dollar tag, and we wouldn't want that, would we now.

The pro phones have USB 3. But getting data on and off iPhones using a Mac or PC is such a PITA I don't see why it really matters, tbh. I don't understand why they don't just give up on syncing already.

Then why Apple change its macbooks usbA for USB-C in 2015? We still had 10usb-A to lightning for iPhone and it was a pain in the ass charging with it.
EU force Apple and every other company to adopt usb-c (in EU, not US by the way).
Besides, I do much prefer usb 3.2 speed in my 16 pro max than the stupid 2.0 on my previous one. Maybe I'm the weird one, and is totally fine.

They still have a keyboard with the lightning port.
Are you guys so anxious to post your Apple hate that you don't even read the article? It says, "Apple no longer manufactures any iPhones with a Lightning port". Doesn't apply to all devices. Just the iPhone. Reading is clearly a lost art.
