This is a great thing, but for me it’s too little too late. Once you dive into Home Assistant, there’s no coming back from it. Not to mention, I don’t see how Apple can ensure reliability as a smart home grows without controlling the networking equipment. Time to bring back the Airport routers if they are going to do this! Although I’ve got UniFi gear which is made from ex-Apple folks and I’d never give that up.

I'd put the probability of that at 0%, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

PoE means wires and switches and other nasty IT networking things, possibly requiring one to have an installer.

Actually, has Apple ever used PoE for any product, ever? The Apple TV would have been a great place to start if not.

It needs a backup battery and local storage in case the power goes out. Otherwise, a power cut is all that's needed to bypass the camera and cloud storage.

My UniFi has an ups I dont run dead and it records locally so no internet needed.

Why can't we just use an old iPhone, I've always had this question...

There are apps in the App Store that will let you do this. I’ve tried it a few times over the years for temporary camera setups, and honestly, it just doesn’t work real well. The problem is that an iPhone just isn’t optimized to run the camera constantly. Heat is the biggest challenge, with the phone becoming warm enough it forces the camera off even in an environment that’s only moderately warm, like, say, a shaded spot that’s 85°F. Turn on compute-heavy features like object recognition and it quickly gets much worse. And obviously, you have to have the phone plugged in for this application, and that just compounds the heat situation, as does the constant WiFi transmission.

It’s worked for me in a pinch for short-term use in a cool indoor spot, but I ended up buying a couple of cheap $20 cameras from Wyze to use as temps when needed.

At least a year of saying everything's been ready for months, that they were just waiting for the SIRI AI launch, that it would all be unveiled at the next Keynote (or at least the home HUB) and now suddenly it's 2027 and the HUB is "in development." The least you could do is apologize for all those months of lies...

Exactly! For a year now they've been claiming everything is ready. Especially the smart home HUB. And now, out of nowhere, they push it all to 2027, acting like nothing happened, without saying why... Such a lack of professionalism

Who are you describing as "they"? Presumably not Apple since all of this messy and annoying last 12 months when it comes of HomePod & Apple TV release date predictions is down to the people putting out rumours such as Mark Gurman and speculation associated with those rumours e.g. that Apple is waiting for Siri AI to be launched before releasing various bits of new hardware. As far as I'm aware Apple never explicitly stated any of that itself although I think it is a plausible explanation for why stuff like the HomePod and Apple TV hardware refreshes haven't arrived yet. We have no solid evidence of when Apple ever planned to release this stuff hence no evidence that it has been pushed back. Gurman couldn't even get the release timing for Siri AI right, a while ago he was saying that was going to come with OS 26.4

Again this is all just rumour and speculation but I don't think the rumour reported in this article precludes the possibility of getting a lot of stuff this year. It's perfectly possible that the new HomePods and Apple TV will release by the end of October, and possibly even the new HomePod Hub (which I always assume means the rumoured HomePod with display). The thing that might be waiting until 2027 might be the security cameras and a lot of rumours were thinking 2027 for those anyway, and this service to accompany those that I'm guessing (and it is just a guess) is some sort of AI home monitoring service similar to the more human-driven service offered by various domestic alarm companies who will monitor your home alarm and external security cameras and alert you if they see an intruder.

No, I mean an actual wireless doorbell on the front door with plug in receivers in the home—as many as you like to ring in different parts of the house. Yet there are no batteries in the bell that people press. I have owned this for a decade and it functions beautifully. I like how clicky the bell button is. It's nice to use it and easy to hit—you can't miss it with your finger.
