THIS is what all the data centers are for

The new Mac Pro will just be a dumb terminal and you will pay for a configuration in the cloud and it will stream to your "Pro" box. Unlimited storage, memory, etc.

:eek::eek::eek:

I don't think it will have an optical drive, nor do I think it will house spinning hard drives (unfortunately)

I think there's a fair chance that it will have spinning hard drives considering that the 2012 iMac still does, and that's by far a smaller footprint.

Hope they design it in a way so that they can sell it in Europe.
I need one. :D

Next question: assuming that it IS a modular design, will I be able to buy modules and use them with my other computers? Being able to have a few modules at home with CPUs and RAM would be great and then I could unplug the laptop (or even, dare to think, the tablet) and take my important files with me on a computer that handles all but the most intensive of tasks very well.

I hope at least they have room for them.
I do remember a rumor about Apple working on 2TB SSD's not long ago (can't wait to see the price on those)

Edit I'm thinking that it will only ship with SSD's at least

There's very little in way of a tower that will be "really" different. Seriously. Sounds like an overhype.

Who said it's going to be a tower? For all we know, it may resemble an oversized Mac Mini with various add-in thunderbolt modules for extra CPUs/GPUs or HDD/SSD RAID configurations.

Can we quote you and laugh at you if they do release something really different:p;)

Here's my wild prediction:

The "Mac Pro" isn't a single desktop machine at all. Instead it comes in a series of modular units what connect together via thunderbolt (hopefully, they click together like lego).

You pick a CPU module, a "base" module (w/the basic platform: mobo, power supply, 1 drive bay), one or more graphics card modules, extra storage modules, etc. You might even be able to click multiple machines together that with automatically configure themselves into a grid.

Can we stop with this nonsense already? Go visit Mac Pro subforum, you can read a lot about Thunderbolt there. There's at least one similar post made like this every day and it has been disproved every time. There is not enough bandwidth, OK? TB can carry video signal OK (should be 4K with Haswells) and some data, but piping bits from GPU at full speed? Forget it.

Also, why everyone is insisting it should be a cube? A modular cube. Bunch of modular mess on my desk, you are all creating problem that does not exist. It's perfectly fine for workstation to have everything in one box. It is very practical.

Unless they're aiming with this "pro" desktop at completely different demographic.

I must say, it was a bold decision for Apple back in 2013 to license OS X on non-Apple hardware. They kept the Pros happy, and even managed to capture a bit of the market for people who like to build their own towers.

Wish it hadn't been so damn expensive though.

ok. ZZZ. that's just casing. How excited can *I* get about the box - whatever shape it's in?

It'll have to be pretty powerful with plenty of expandability to compete against the portable high end notebooks.

I'm willing to sacrifice some power for portability, but if this new MP is not going to be portable (and it shouldn't be, if its aimed toward pro users) then it had better be impressively powerful.

New Mac Pro is going to be a standalone thunderbolt device with integrated gpu's, memory etc, and is going to require another mac to function. You heard it here first guys

Almost right. I think it will be a thunderbolt modular design you can stack to increase power on your need. No need for another mac tho.

It will be a mix between a server and a desktop

I would be interesting to see if Apple moves towards a design that can also be rack-mountable as well as desktop (eg, 19"x5.25")
.

With everything that Apple does to simply and provide clean designs, I don't see them using a bunch of cables tying it all together; That would be hideous. could see it as a system that snaps together cleanly, maybe.

i hate to be a pessimist, but "something really different" makes me think its going to prioritize all the wrong things... like being super thin with non-upgradeable components.

"its our most beautiful mac pro ever, carefully optimized to be the fastest facebook and twitter experience yet."

Will it be a Retina terminal?? They could advertise it as the thinest mac yet!
