All this talk about Thunderbolt is total ignorance of Thunderbolt's bandwidth and the bandwidth of basic internal hardware components. If Apple is going to make a modular design (for which we've seen zero evidence, you guys have completely fabricated the idea like a game of Telephone), it'll pretty much have to be based on a new, proprietary technology nobody's seen before. Let's not forget that Apple hates cables.

Some of you commenters have no idea what pros like about the Pro.

Some of you Pros have no idea about computer technology and how it works.

Some of you are really living in fantasy land.

Let's all take a deep breath and come back down to Earth.

Why would Apple spend a lot of money and time totally redesigning a product line that, while profitable, isn't a major market, when the alternative is to simply make another computer in the same old box with off-the-shelf hardware at a minimum of cost?

Bottom line, no full speed PCI slots for multiple GPUs = not a Mac Pro.

No no no no

Please, NO, not "thinner". Not for a desktop -still, they did it with the iMac :-(

So, Apple doesn't like cables eh? So why the speculation that the new MacPro will need external this and external that?

I bought my MacPro because I wanted everything in one tidy, well designed, accessible box without having to get shedloads of plug sockets for external add-ons.

I know it's big, I know it's heavy (so leave it alone then!) but it does a good job of keeping it all (reasonably) tidy.

Please let the fabled new MacPro do the same.

THIS is what all the data centers are for

The new Mac Pro will just be a dumb terminal and you will pay for a configuration in the cloud and it will stream to your "Pro" box. Unlimited storage, memory, etc.

:eek::eek::eek:

wow, you're on a roll today....

the new professional Mac would be "heavily reliant on Thunderbolt" with "no internal expandability", and would have support for dual-GPU's and no FireWire or optical drive.

No internal expandability? No optical drive? No FireWire? I predict it to be DOA... Landing with a thud? Not that bad because people will buy anything, but this box sounds like the old original Mac, and for these days and times, it's going to be a hard sell...

And all this because they won't put a fan guard on the inside of the box. Well, or to be sillier, that the EU requires a guard for the inside of the huge fan. Which shouldn't be open and accessible when it's running anyway...

OH, wasn't there a mockup the last time this subject of a redesigned Mac Pro surfaced? Something that looked like a toaster? YECCHHHH... I like expandability!

"It has also been rumored that the new Mac Pro would be the first Apple computer in years to be 'Made in the USA'."

Its also the ONLY Mac (for now)..

Plus, this also sounds like the Mac Pro WAS make in the US once.... which is not true.

OH MAN!!!

I HAVE A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS ....

The modular workstation idea was the thing that killed SGI, in a fit of similar hubris. The final version of their Origin/Onyx line was a set of bricks you'd combine to get the system you wanted: CPU boxes, GPU boxes, memory boxes, and I/O or storage boxes. They were all linked by a high-performance external bus (Numalink) that operated almost as fast as the internal bus.

But this is Apple. They could power it in dog poop and folks will think it is amazing

And wasn't that like 15 years ago. Tech is hella better now

I dream for a Dual Simultaneous System with split Ram and shared CPU and Video card.

That would make switching to Mac a no brainer for windows users or gamers.

Bootcamp and virtualization in terms for usability is not adequate for skeptical buyers.

Multiple GPUs? Let's hope they remember to include power plugs for them.

Or at least a second 5.25" bay so I can add my own PSU :). But seems Apple are dropping the optical bays? At least in all their other Macs and when they drop the classic MacBook Pro which is the only Mac left with optical disc drives.

No matter what it is I am buying it! Along with two new cinema displays because why the hell not

Spot on - I DO NOT WANT my work desk cluttered with cables.
