And a voice plan.

Yea, I really feel like an iPod Touch with a data and voice plan would be a very successful product line ;) They could call it the iTelephone or something...

Good idea calling it the iTelephone, that way people won't confuse it with the iPhone.

A lot of people don't seem to understand this, but HD (720p) is less than one megapixel. If you're so focused on video recording, why would you want more than that? The A5 seems capable of 1080p and FaceTime as a standard recently started supporting more than 480p, so maybe we'll see a bump to 2MP sensors in the future (1080p is about 2MP).

Otherwise, if video recording is the focus as you describe, sticking a 5MP sensor in there would give you worse video quality compared to an equivalently-sized 1MP sensor. The more dense the sensor's pixels, the less light hits each one, and the worse the image quality.

So given that FaceTime was only 480p and the A4 could only do 720p, the iPod touch 4 had the absolute highest res sensors you would want for video. If you're arguing that you'd like a better sensor for pictures (which you're not), then you might have a point, but then they run into size issues for decent-quality sensors.

I don't really get what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure no one is complaining about 1 megapixel VIDEO. 720P (960x720) is plenty good for such a small device. However, 1 megapixel STILLS is terrible. I don't complain about it on my iPad because, heck, who's going to take many stills with a tablet. But a lot of people carry their iPod Touch around with them at all times. a high-quality 5 MP shooter like the iPhone 4's would be great.

The iPod Touch's camera is much worse, but many of your examples are just talking about video or video chat, where it isn't *that* much worse than the iPhone 4. The quality bottleneck in Facetime is not the number of pixels (or even the overall sensor quality) of the camera at this point :)

True. True. I was lumping both cameras in there, when i should have emphasized the back camera. You're right, the front facing face time camera is on par with the iphones.

Its the back camera that blows. The camera that one Takes pictures with, or uses to actually shoot video that they then edit and post on youtube, blogs or send to their friends.

Videos they can transfer to their ipads and edit in imovie while on the road.

Right now the flip camera is HD and CAN transfer video to the ipad via Apple's cam connection kit. And many pocket cameras have very high mega pixel count for great still pictures. People who want good video or pictures will still opt for the flip or point and shoot in this scenario, because the ipod's camera is sucky in comparison. Which as a die hard Apple fan kinda irks me. Lol.

I don't expect the touch to get 1080p video or 10 megapixel stills.....HOWEVER....a slight bump in camera quality is not too much to ask for. And as i wrote, it makes good business sense.

Ipod touch sales have declined a bit in the last year. Which makes sense because of the ipad. Adding a better camera will help make the ipod more viable in my humble opinion. Seems like a minor thing, but its kinda a big deal. There are many people like me who would NOT take a flip or digital camera on a trip, if the ipod had a better camera.

Others have talked about 3G capabilities as a potential upgrade. Yes, that WOULD be cool. Especially since the ipad has it. Why not the ipod touch? It could happen. I know Steve Jobs mentioned at the iOS 5 keynote that the next opperating software would include SMS text messaging in wifi and 3G.

Alot of people seem to think that 3G or a better camera for that matter in an ipod touch would canabalize iphone sales. I disagree. VOIP calls on ipads arent hurting iphone sales. Neither is facetime on the ipad or ipod touch. People will ALWAYS want a phone and the services it provides.

Having an ipod touch with more advanced features like 3G or a better camera would only compliment the iphone....or give others who travel overseas or dont want or cant afford a phone contract options as well.

Its all good for Apple.

Anyway....we will see what happens.

Seriously, white ipod touch that is hideous.

I hope there will at least be some internal upgrades.

Camera has to improve, 0.7 MP just isn't going to cut it nowadays.

More RAM and A5 should come if Apple really wants to market the Touch as a gaming device.

The above shows a minor update where processor is upgraded every generation and a camera improvement so Apple can market behind that concept.

3G won't come to the touch, it will kill iPhone sales.

The camera even if Apple doesn't include A5 or other specs has to be upgraded. Perhaps a minor update would just be having iPhone'4s camera in the 5th gen or any other thinner 5MP cameras from omnivision.

Its good that at least the design will be the same, I bought several 4g cases really cheap and it seems like I could use it for the 5g.

If they add 3G and an earpiece I will definitel be trying it put as a low-cost phone.

A 3G ipod touch wouldnt "kill" iphone sales anymore than the 3G ipad does. Why? Because the ipod is smaller and more phone like? Hardly. Phones are completely different. I am not saying Apple will do a 3G ipod touch. Just saying its possible, and would not hurt iphone sales. IMHO. :)

Do you really think people would hold and iPad to their ear and listen to a caller.

If the iPod Touch has 3G there are almost no more differences, it may not hurt sales at first but when people start taking advantage of the 3G they will use apps that allow them to text and call through 3G.

I just think its highly improbable not impossible that Apple will produce an iPod touch 5g3g.

I am considering a rumored pre-paid iPhone and just not paying for phone or data. How would that work out?
You would buy the pre-paid iPhone at full retail price since there's no carrier subsidy.

You can buy an unlocked iPhone 4 at full retail right now; it doesn't come with a SIM. What you do with it is your business.

I will probably buy an unlocked iPhone 5 and drop in an AT&T GoPhone pay-as-you-go SIM. My forecast is that I'll average about $15-20 per month between calls and data. Don't need text as I use Google Voice for that. Compared to acquiring a subsidized iPhone and signing AT&T's cheapest two-year contract, it looks like I'll save $250 annually. Plus, I have a device that will use local SIMs when I travel abroad (or I might consider using the Truphone Local Anywhere SIM that I have).

Plus I have the option of upgrading the handset annually at will, selling the old one on Craigslist (unlocked iPhones are apparently hot items).

Hmm if there won't be a specs update, it got me thinking.

There may only be a rear camera update along with ips display and of course Jobs will claim how revolutionary it is that there will be a white one.

Lol. Of course you wouldnt hold the ipad up to your ear. You'd use a headset. Or if you were in a quiet enough atmosphere, you could just use the external speakers and mic.

And as far as the 3G ipod...it still wouldnt be a phone phone with all the bells and whistles of a phone. Would some choose an ipod touch over an iphone then? Sure. But a 3G ipod, like a 3G ipad wouldnt be subsidized and therefore sold at a premium. Bottom line? Apple still gets paid. It's win win for them.

Others wouldnt want anything but an iphone with a contract.

Then there is the rumor thst apple MAY release a contractless iphone as well in the fall. Would that hurt ipod touch sales?

Again...its ALL good for Apple. People are still gonna buy them. Wether its an iphone or an ipod touch.

Even the phone companies will look at this as a win win. Wether 3G ipod, ipad or iphone....THEY will be getting paid.

I have no idea WHAT Apple will do in the fall or in the future. Just saying that a 3G ipod is TOTALLT within the realm of possibility.

Heck. I remember before the ipod touch got a camera there were people on forums said Apple would NEVER put a camera in because it would "canabilize" the iphone. Well they did....and um....it didn't.

:)

The rumored price was $350 for a locked/pre-paid. I am just not interested getting stuck into a contract that I have no use for since I want the device, just not the voice or texting. 3G would be nice but I can see how that would add up quickly.

The iPod Touch is already at $299 so another leap to an iPhone there is insignificant.

iPod Touch with 3G+WiFi connectivity should suffice :D

I don't care what colors it will be.

why everyone is hoping for a 3G Model?Apple will never gonna put it :)

Oh yeah? Many people convinced Apple would never dump white Macbook either, don't they?

Hah, so true. So now the white iPod touch will be the new white MacBook, and forget about no ODD, this new white MacBook will help you get along with even fewer ports and encumbrances than that! :D Less is more (profit), even with 3G tacked on.

I predict:

- same price points
- improved cameras
- longer battery life
- A5 chip
- 16GB base model (and no increase to 128GB, just 16, 32, 64)
- 512MB RAM
- new white model

:)

That's why I'm considering GoPhone pay-as-you-go. The basic call rate is 10 cents a minute. I shoved $25 into my account which will run out in 90 days. I believe if I add $100, it lasts for a year.

You can add a feature plan (like text or data) which expire in a month. However, if you renew the feature plan, I believe they rollover the remaining texts or data.

Here's the GoPhone data plans:
10MB $5
100MB $15
500MB $25

Thus, if I pay for a 500MB data plan, plus three months of adding 10MB; my monthly average will be $13.33 for 132.5MB of data each month. Calls might be $3-4 per month, ending up with my $18 per month average.

Truphone's data plan is not competitive, very pricey, plus their per minute call rate is high. I'm really keeping the SIM around to potentially use while traveling, but I am not sold on the service.

I have already paid enough into T-Mobile's prepaid to be a Gold Rewards member. As long as I keep spending about $15/year. My minutes roll over and do not expire for another year.

I really do not use my cellphone at all. I just want the device features of the iPhone over the iPod Touch and no monthly payments on a contract.

This is a record year for me. I have already used 17 minutes of talk time in the first half of this year.

I REALLY hope that there will be a better upgrade w/ the ipod touch. More ram and the A5 processor is my wish. A better camera is a good thing, but i really need a upgrade from my 2g ipod touch. A white ipod touch is NOT a update.

Well then, just wait for this lower-priced unsubsidized iPhone (which I'm guessing will be an iPhone 3GS or something else based off that handset's design).

Again, the AT&T GoPhone is not a contract plan. It's a prepaid service

Like you, I'm a T-Mobile Gold Rewards member; it took me over three years to burn through $100 (which was aided by making a few local calls in Mexico).

I could continue with my two-device strategy (Motorola dumbphone using T-Mobile pay-as-you-go and my 64GB iPod touch), however, I really want the iPhone for its better camera. I'm still schlepping my Canon PowerShot sometimes.

If Apple offers an unlocked, contract-free 64GB iPhone 5, I am sold.
