This seems odd. I kind of expected them to update it to follow the design of the iPhone 6, once that's announced.

This is garbage. You can buy a much faster unlocked phone for the price of this device now.

Upgrade the processor already Apple! My children love your iPod, but the CPU is way overdue.

Another cheaper product from the Cook era. I normally like the idea of a cheaper apple product but it's starting to become a dangerous trend.

My iPod touch from 2007 had 16GB of storage. Of course it cost a lot more and had a slower processor and worse screen, but it's fundamentally still a music player. :-/

iPod USPs?

What features and qualities does an iPod need contrary to an iPhone?

1. Long battery life
2. More space

If Apple is really planning a 16 GB iPod touch, both aspects are missing. And I can well understand people considering the iPod to make no sense in times of smartphones in everyone's pocket.

Instead, Apple should finally update the iPod Classic with its really low power consumption and its 160 GB harddrive. THIS would make sense. I don't need a quadcore CPU in my iPod...

It's not a phablet, iPhone 6 will simply be an iPhone with a slightly larger screen.

In other words, a phablet

I love the iPod touch. The most beautiful was the 4 with the chrome back.

I hate the easy-scratch cheap-looking coloured alloy.

Not sure how adding another camera makes this any more desirable. Apple are running out of ideas.

Except for the fact that the 4th gen wasn't chrome, it was stainless steel.
And the 5th gen isn't an alloy, it's aluminium.
And the 4th gen is more scratch-prone than the 5th.
And more features at a lower price is more desirable.

If they could somehow give it cellular data support like an iPad but not allow actual calls. Just texting and web surfing or whatever. If they did that it'd be their top seller in no time.

A LOT of engineering involved for something with waning sales.

Its already got a fantastically thin design.

Speaks volumes about the price of an iPhone, doesn't it?

Well not just that, a number of things are better in an iPhone including:

- Network capability
- GPS
- Compass
- More RAM
- Better processor
- Better Camera
- More Microphones
- Better Speakers
- Larger Battery

it was polished stainless steal, which looks very chrome like in appearance. Give him a break.

All aluminum finished products use an aluminum alloy. Yes, its an alloy.

I wonder if the iPod touch will ever get a CPU refresh before it dies. it's cool that a Apple is lowering the price and offering more feature, but the fact that they are still selling multiple A5 devices is terrible news for platform fragmentation.

C'mon, Apple, just give me a 128GB iTouch this Fall so I can have most of my music in one single device. I use iPhone for calls and social media, iPad for web browsing and some light work (plus gaming), I like my iPod to be dedicated to music.

And yes, I know I could get a 160GB classic model, but frankly I prefer iOS7's interface (plus with continuity in iOS8 I'll be able to resort to my iPod if one of my other devices happen to run out of battery).

Another "new" product. With 2+ years old internals and downgraded storage. Oh joy. :/

What's next? Re-release the 2 year old Mac Mini, with even less storage and slower CPU? Now at the amazing low priece of $559!!!

I wonder if they'll downgrade the camera. I can't imagine reducing the storage to 16 GB reduce the cost enough to sell this at $199.

The fact that they're doing anything to the iPod touch at all gives me hope that there will be an updated model in the fall, but at the same time this seems like an odd time to introduce this if a new model was imminent.

Another cheaper product from the Cook era. I normally like the idea of a cheaper apple product but it's starting to become a dangerous trend.

Another trend is the rise in price for a MacBook Pro with dedicated graphics. The rise in price for iPhone (unlocked) not to mention the rise in price of entry for the MacPro.

Why don't they just stick maybe an A6 in there and make it the 5.5th gen (much like how they revised the 6th gen so it was often known as the 6.5th gen iPod Classic).

Would make it last another software update or two - keeping an A5, a three and a half year old CPU, seems foolish if the product is going to be updated anyway.

Makes sense to me. Perfect for kids who don't need (or aren't allowed or whose parents can't afford) a full phone, but still lets them have access to apps, music, a camera, etc.

Except that there are hardly any of these kids left ...
All the 10 year olds have phones now. 12 years old? You better have WhatsApp ...

And why shouldn't they? Most reasons grown ups have phones for also apply to kids. No parent wants to give up the flexibility anymore of calling their kids to tell them about changed plans or where to meet.

The problem is: all the cheap phones out there are becoming (Android) smartphones. They have access to apps, music, camera, etc. It's getting hard to justify an iPod Touch in addition to that, and at the same time, those kids start getting locked into the Android ecosystem.

That's something I'd be worried about in Apple's position. Suddenly you don't just need to get new customers, you need to get them to switch.

Time they need to get rid of the sixteen and go 32 and above.

No as much in the Touch line. A 16GB keeps the entry price down and a 3-10 y.o. doesn't really need more than 16GB. That's really who this model is for. Little kids think they have the same phone as mommy and daddy, and it's an iPhone trainer for older kids.

need more memory!

We need an 8GB iPod shuffle for $49, 32GB ipod nano for $149 and a 32/64/128GB for $199/299/399 iPod touch, then we can retire the iPod classic.
