Another cheaper product from the Cook era. I normally like the idea of a cheaper apple product but it's starting to become a dangerous trend.

You mean like the iPod mini, nano, and shuffle, eMac, Mac mini, AirPort Express, iPhone 4GB (somewhat), Apple Mighty Mouse (today), iPod touch 8GB 2nd/3rd/4th gen, Time Capsule 500GB (2009), discounted iPhone 3GS 8GB, discounted iPhone 4 8GB, discounted iPad 2 16GB? All of those things came out under the 2nd tenure of Steve Jobs. Is it so bad that Apple is making their products available to more people?

Speaks volumes about the price of an iPhone, doesn't it?

And your point is that they should sell it at cost to make people happy?

Get over it - the market demand clearly justifies the pricing.

High quality build, well supported, low price <--- you can only have two of the three.

They already made it! It's called the iPhone.

What I meant was that I need an iPhone (for making phone calls) / that the iPod touch is not sufficient for me. I'd rather have the thin and beautiful iPod touch as my only mobile device.

Maybe the iPhone 6 will be nearly identical to the touch design-wise.

Unless you go with the Google Nexus line-up. But sure, that is not really a viable business model for a hardware company.

I wonder how many of you are actual iPod touch users?

I've been carrying one around with me everyday for the past 3 years, and I love it. Why?

No monthly fee! I'm not into making phone calls, especially since i can text or email me people. Its much cheaper for me to have a prepaid flip phone nearby

Facetime audio:
if you and more of your friends embraced FaceTime audio, then your iPod touch can make calls.

public wifi is becoming more common each day. if you carry an iPod touch around like me you'll find out fast how many and where they are.

I see all these iPhone users, and when one of them says to me I finally got my monthly bill down to $50-60 per month I just cringe.

embrace the iPod touch and you'll thank me. as matter of fact you can call me on it via FaceTime audio and it won't cost us anything.

iPod Touch is indeed awesome! I love it.

Like many others I've gone the way of 'dumb phone' + 'smart device'.
My old Nokia phone only costs me $20 a month. It does its job as a phone.
I don't always need my iPod touch with me everywhere I go.

In the car I use an iPod Nano 5th gen.
For the gym I use an iPod Nano 6th gen.
Only when I'm travelling interstate and overseas do I carry my iPod Touch around with me to use at WiFi hotspots, take photos etc etc.

The only improvement I would suggest Apple make is to put back the auto brightness sensor. I was hoping they would be able to do that this year. But we may have to wait until next year .. or the next?
A spec bump would be nice too, in line with iOS 8 release. :)

The iPod Touch is here to stay.

Makes sense to me. Perfect for kids who don't need (or aren't allowed or whose parents can't afford) a full phone, but still lets them have access to apps, music, a camera, etc.

Shame that it'll be running a 2yo chip, as it can surely only be supported for a limited amount of time before it can't handle the OS anymore. But then I suppose that many of those who would buy this don't care about having the latest features and being able to play the most advanced games.

ya seriously Apple skimping with the SoC once again keeping the A5 in there. should of at least had a A6 in there, but anywhoo the A5 will be alright till next year when ios 8 comes out then i expect new ipod touches to at least have a A6

Google Nexus is well-supported? Guess you weren't one of the Google Nexus 5 owners who were waiting to upgrade to KitKat?
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...itkat-release-date-when-can-i-get-it--1196266

If you drop your iPhone 5/5c/5s in water and it dies, Apple will replace it for you for $269 under the "out-of-warranty" replacement service. Just go to your nearest Apple retail store.

If you drop your Nexus in water...? Where's the nearest Google retail store?

No, why would I have been, since the phone shipped with KitKat?

That does sound handy. Just a 200 km drive to the airport, a plane ticket to Germany and cab ride to the Berlin Apple store. Only to find out that this only applies in the US. Oh well, at least I got to do some traveling and knock down a couple of nice German Weissbiers.

Nah, I'll just stick with calling up my insurance company to notify them that I need a replacement, go out and buy *any* phone I like from *any* store I like and wait for the insurance money (full retail minus deductible) to be deposited in my account.

Here's the point: when the next OS update comes out, Android users don't know when or even IF their device will ever be able to be updated.

As a US resident, not a problem for me. If not, then maybe Apple isn't as appealing for you.

So it sounds like you're pretty happy with your Android phone? Then why are you wasting time griping about Apple's pricing? That's like a Honda Civic owner bitching about the price of a Tesla. While I appreciate your deep concern for how I'm spending my money, I'm quite satisfied thank you.

Hence the Nexus lineup. You'll aleays get the updates as soon as Google releases them for at least as long as the device is supported.

I have an iPhone, thank you very much.

Also, if you think the Nexus 5 is a Civic, then the iPhone is more akin to the Jazz for three times the price...

Which is not that long in comparison with Apple devices, +/- 18 months.

I have a Nexus 4 (as I'm the Android developer at work - https://vimeo.com/98764421 ) and the biggest question these days for nx4 users is that Android "L" will be supported or not.

If - if - it doesn't get support it will be purely artificial as the nx7 (last model - that is supported) is more or less a blown up nx4 hw-wise.

Well then, why are you grumbling about the price of the iPhone if you bought one? Were you forced to buy it?

And if the Google Nexus is such a superior value, then why haven't you switched?

So...we get the same crappy 5th generation model that is like 2-3 years behind the iPhone in terms of the camera, CPU and other features? People would be better off getting a used iPhone and just using it as a Touch. I doubt the iPod Touch will even be able to run the new iOS it's falling so far behind.

Well then, why are you grumbling about the price of the iPhone if you bought one? Were you forced to buy it?

Because I don't like the feeling that I'm getting fleeced. And while I wasn't *forced* to buy it, just like I said in another thread, I had grown bored of Windows Phone and did not want an Android, so it was not like there was an abundance of choice available for me. Either pay good money for something I don't want, or overpay for something that I did want to try out, since I never had had an iPhone prior to this.

And if the Google Nexus is such a superior value, then why haven't you switched?

Because my iPhone 5 works? And I'm looking at a 5.5"+ sized phone next, so unless Google comes with a Nexus phablet, I'll be tossing it up between the Note 4, the iPhone 6 and a possible refresh of the Lumia 1520, should one be released this fall.

A LOT of engineering involved for something with waning sales.

Its already got a fantastically thin design.

It needs more CPU power and a better camera. They don't need to design anything new. Just do a cut-up job on the iPhone. Who cares about ultra-thin? I sure as hell don't. I just want a faster iPod Touch with a better camera and better battery life. Bigger is just fine.

They should do a a6 ipt. Basically the iPhone 5 internals w/o cellular. It would sell

Being "fleeced" suggests that you were somehow deceived into buying it. The cost of producing the phone is completely irrelevant. The cost tells the manufacturer the minimum they can charge to break-even. What they end up charging is the highest amount they feel they can charge and not lose too many customers. They have ZERO obligation to minimize their profits to keep you happy.

Let's imagine you have a lemonade stand. It costs you $1 per cup to make, so you charge $2 per cup to make a $1 profit. If you then find high quality lemons at Costco that end up saving you half the cost ($0.50 per cup). You still have plenty of customers happy to pay you $2 per cup. So now you make 50% more profits. Are you then fleecing customers if you don't lower your price to $1 per cup to keep your profit margin at "only" 100%? Or could you argue that you earned that extra profit because you found a way to lower the cost (which required extra effort that wasn't measured in the cost) without lowering the quality?

Final point: if you suggest that there's another product that was a better value but you didn't buy it, then you didn't really believe it was a better value, did you? Buying things and then complaining about the price afterwards is ridiculous.

Yes. But getting the feeling is just that. A subjective feeling that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

What? Of course I might think that product X is a much better value for money, but still choose to buy product Y for one reason or another, and especially in a case like this where the reason was a completely irrational urge to try something new.

No as much in the Touch line. A 16GB keeps the entry price down and a 3-10 y.o. doesn't really need more than 16GB. That's really who this model is for. Little kids think they have the same phone as mommy and daddy, and it's an iPhone trainer for older kids.

A little delayed answer...

My kid (4) has 32gb ipod... unfortunately, a lot of his apps are for both the ipod and ipad, they are large - easily close to or over a gig. Combine that with a few itunes movies to keep him going off wifi and some music, and its well over the available space of a 16gb model.

I have a 16gb ipad 2 that i use for very few things and I constantly beat up against the limit, especially when the ipad3 appeared with the retina display and my apps all got bigger.

Except that there are hardly any of these kids left ...
All the 10 year olds have phones now. 12 years old? You better have WhatsApp ...

And why shouldn't they? Most reasons grown ups have phones for also apply to kids. No parent wants to give up the flexibility anymore of calling their kids to tell them about changed plans or where to meet.

The problem is: all the cheap phones out there are becoming (Android) smartphones. They have access to apps, music, camera, etc. It's getting hard to justify an iPod Touch in addition to that, and at the same time, those kids start getting locked into the Android ecosystem.

That's something I'd be worried about in Apple's position. Suddenly you don't just need to get new customers, you need to get them to switch.

Sorry, I'm late to reply on this. There are quite a few kids in this street who are under 10 and their parents don't want them to have phones, but are fine with them having a low-cost, portable gaming option. This also gives them access to apps, music and a camera. I'm talking about kids where they're usually still with their parents or at the house of a friend or relative, so there's no need to keep tabs on them. Different things for different people, I guess.
