Apple Plans Paid iCloud+ Upgrades for Heavy AI Users

Apple is planning to let users pay to increase their AI limits, with upgrade possibilities available through iCloud+.

During today's earnings call for the third fiscal quarter of 2026, Apple CEO Tim Cook said it's early, but the company expects to offer options for people who want to make heavy use of AI services.

In terms of what it means for compute cost, it's obviously early going for us, and so I don't want to say that we have a complete plan for that. We do believe there will be people that want to use it a lot and we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+ where people can buy up the stack on iCloud+. We'll see how the pickup for that is.

At WWDC, Apple said there would be daily usage limits on features like Image Playground, but increased access would be available through iCloud+ plans. Cook's comments today suggest there may also be iCloud+ add-ons specifically for AI usage.

Apple hasn't offered any details on what it might charge to increase AI limits, and that's information that we might get when iOS 27 launches in September. Features like Siri AI are expected to remain free to use.

Anything that threatens to start eating into Apple's massively profitable services business. 😛 I think Apple are being deliberately opaque at the moment, because they themselves are working to understand how the pricing will evolve based on real-world usage.

I don't mind a paid option for heavy use as long as the regular features stay useful without another subscription. The price and daily limits will make or break it.

Allow some of us heavy users to use our heavy equipment sitting in our homes for AI, we paid the premium Apple tax for the hardware now let us use it for AI. 🙄

What else can you do with AI in Apple environment? All it is is just emails and text messages. Everything else I can do it on my own when I subscribe to either Claude or ChatGPT they’ll do anything else I want except going through my mail and going through my messages.

They plan to get people hooked on their AI features and then they will jack the prices up as high as they want, and the addicted will keep paying. Psychology 101. They don’t even need most users to be paying for it. This is why I refuse to become dependent on any AI. The prices today are artificially deflated to get people hooked.

LLMS are extraordinarily expensive to operate. Lots of water and electricity use. Apple is right to charge more for heavy users.

While it is very nice to have a Siri that finally works, I don’t know if I’d be willing to pay for it. The whole “when is my mom’s flight arriving” thing is nice, but if I had to pay $10/mo, I might just look it up myself.

Waiting to see the exact usage limits. With an add on to the iCloud plans, Apple will easily get more revenue from services. Hopefully the paid upgrades are not going to be expensive.

Every company with AI is trying to figure out how to monetize AI. For the most part, AI loses money. It costs much more to generate a response than a simple google search query.

Let’s be honest, Apple is trying to become a more services oriented company and fully participate in the subscription economy. If they can nudge a few more dollars out of you each month at their 30% margin, they will try. Until and unless cheap/free AI can be embedded into the product, they will be looking for a way to offset the backend cost of AI.
