No offense, but your reply is almost as large a "wall of text" (really it wasn't that big) as his message and you pretty much say nothing at all. Have a super nice day now. :D

You might get 20 episodes a month for $20 in standard definition, but you'd never get 20 shows, at least not on iTunes. They tried TV Show "rentals" when ATV Gen2 first came out, but it didn't last very long. I seriously doubt any streaming options they come up with are going to be a much better deal, really.

I like your sig. I'll have to go through my electronic spares room, dig out all the resistors, diodes, capacitors etc, and add them to my sig, so I can feel validated.

Heard that one before...and before...

i do think there will be a new Apple TV. they could use a bump to hardware that can support 265 etc. and hopefully more storage although it won't likely be as big as 128GB (maybe that's whats up with the missing 32GB chips). And I think there will be an App Store. I just don't think it will be as 'full' as some folks are thinking. I suspect it will be the same photo viewing, video, tv stations, music playing etc, home kit apps and some games (console style ones)

$40/mo for 25 channels? LOL I'll pass. $19.99/mo for 25 channels, then *maybe* depending on channels.

i'm thinking more like $20-25 a month for Apple to be considered a 'participating service provider' for all the AMC etc apps and maybe $40 a month to get those and the premium ones like HBO, Showtime, Starz. get me BBC, iTV etc and I'd go up to $50. I pay $50 just for basic cable so I'd still be saving money

As an Englishman, I would just like to point out that "ITV" is a British TV station, the name of which has nothing whatsoever to do with this modern, overused craze of prefixing everything with "i", to denote a connection to the digial realm/internet technology. "ITV" has been around since the 50s-60s, whereas "iPlayer" from the BBC, is definitely named this way, purposely, and intended to signify the digital realm.

It's a bit like seeing "IPhone" or "i-Phone", when you know very well it is "iPhone". It's not the end of the world, but you've typed it wrong, and I would be remiss to let that go :p ;)

after using AVT 2 and 3 for many years, I just give up on Apple. They have not done anything to ATV for years. Junk apps show up on the home screen frequently. I have to hide them all except Netlix, youtube, and HBO go.

I went to the dark side and bought Google Nexus player and Nvidia Shield TV. Here are what I like about Android TV
1) app store and app can be installed from a PC.
2) Kodi (XBMC) is officially on the app store and can be easily installed. No need to jailbreak or root.
3) Simple and fast UI

it replaces both ATV 3 and WDTV for Netflix, youtube, and local streaming.

even after Apple releases new ATV 4, app like Kodi would not be in the app store. and it might take forever to jailbreak if that is even possible.

I've never had a problem with losing the AppleTV remote, but that's probably attributable to having heard all the tales of woe before I got one (so it has a particular place it gets put when not in use). I actually think it'd be a fine remote - IF it had volume up/down buttons. Since it doesn't, I mostly use a universal remote that can speak AppleTV as well as control the volume on either the TV or stereo, as needed. Most important features either way: play/pause, back up a little, change the volume.

Why not? I'm guessing that as long as an app complies it'll get in, pretty much as it is for the MAS and iOS App Store ( with the odd silly exception ).

Currently using a Raspberry Pi and wondering if I should go Android or wait for the new Apple TV.
You can actually turn your Raspberry Pi into a media server for your  TV by installing Forked Daapd, though you'll have to update it frequently because new versions of iTunes and the  TV's OS tend to break it, though you can enable SSH so you can update it remotely. You can also use Automator to create program which will update it with the same Terminal commands you'd need for updating it via SSH. That way, instead of having to go to Terminal and entering a bunch of commands every few months, you can just click on the Automator application you created. That would make it easier to deal with the frequent necessity of updates. Automator and AppleScript are great things to know about. If you're not familiar with Automator, this might help: http://jbmachelp.besaba.com/mac/mac-index/automator---a-useful-tool--.html

Just make AppleTV and iTunes actually work together. Jebebus there's no reason why I can't rent a movie on stupid iTunes, but it won't play on my ATV - even though if I purchase something on iTunes it shows up on my ATV. I have over 300 iTunes movies, yet when I'm navigating the store it rarely shows up as a PURCHASED item in the store - sometimes I've accidentally purchased something twice because of this - drives me nuts. When I purchase a movie Bundle, I want grouped as a BUNDLE. Not scattered all over my movie library. If Vudu can keep collections/bundles together, there's zero reason iTunes can't do the same.

I still don't understand "cord cutters" who would sign up for a $30-$40 service. Presumably also with Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Same here. It isn't like I can get cheap internet through some alternative service. If I cut the chord I'd still have to pay Crapcast/Crapfinity $80-$90 a month for Internet only (and I wouldn't even have any TV), Netflix $10, Hulu $10, HBO Go $10, NFL Pass $200, etc. So exactly what am I accomplishing other than the benefit of "thumbing my nose" at the Cable company which is STILL getting my money only delivering nothing for it. And I'd have to hope my internet works consistently - which it doesn't.

Hopefully it will support external hard drive through USB, multiple file format playability (AVI, MP4, MKV)
Most certainly not by Apple themselves. The weirdest kinds of stuff (codecs) can be put into AVI and MKV containers. That is just a bag of hurt to support and goes against Apple's promise of products that "just work".

Though by now I find it hard to imagine a new Apple TV without proper App Store. I'd expect 3rd party Apps to fill the void.

I've arrived late to this discussion so don't plan on reading all 13 pages of posts that have come before me. I suspect, therefore, that someone has already made the point that I'm going make and, if so, I apologise in advance.

I've been pretty excited about an upgraded Apple TV. I have a 3rd generation model in my kitchen and use it for AirPlay from my iPad, having done away with an old STB that used to drive the content for that TV. I'm a Netflix subscriber so occasionally move the Apple TV into my lounge hooking it up to my main TV set for that purpose. It's also much more reliable for YouTube than the appallingly bad on demand reliability that's built in to my Humax Freesat Freetime box.

But here's the thing. For us here in the UK, the Apple TV is pretty useless really. It doesn't have the on demand services of any of the major broadcasters, including the best of the lot, the BBC iPlayer. OK, so you can use AirPlay from an iDevice (and that's what I do in the kitchen) but when competing devices like the Roku and Amazon Fire have UK services on them it makes you start to wonder why anyone on this side of the pond bothers with an Apple TV in the first place. 95% of the services on it are not UK friendly (and that's being generous).

If a new Apple TV comes out, perhaps the BBC will release iPlayer and we could see All4, Demand 5 and the terrible ITV Player follow too. I'm starting to wonder if it's too little too late and I'll just end up with an Amazon Fire and be able to watch Top Gear 2.0 on it. ;-)

Kodi is not in the IOS store unless that has changed recently. Too bad because Kodi is way better than plex for streaming local files. Plex never finds all mine and takes forever to scan even on a decent computer

Dear Apple, look and learn:

Kind regards,

Common sense.

Great post! A TV/Media remote is the last device that should be overthought and junked up. It just needs BUTTONS for back, forward, home and menu. That's it.
