I wonder if this could all be solved with longer presses. For peek pop, just peek for a moment and if you're still peeking after another moment, pop in! The duration you can peek before it auto pops in could be a preference. For wiggling and moving app icons around, maybe just wait for two long presses in the same spot or something.

Anyway I think it could be done. I wont particularly miss 3D touch myself. I really only used it to get to the wireless/Bluetooth settings a little bit quicker.

It seems like Apple is preparing for a Micro-LED display
Nope. It most likely has nothing to do with micro-LED.

3D Touch was nixed on the XR because of its CGS (cover glass sensor) process.

This is currently not used in the XS or XS Max, but Ming-Chi Kuo claims the 2019 model OLEDs will also implement CGS. If that's the case, then there is a very good chance they will also lose 3D Touch.

3D touch is such a useful feature that I cannot live without. Going from an iPhone 6 to Xs, makes me realize how much more efficient it is. I for one love the peek and poke and the ability to have shortcuts. It makes the whole user experience better overall. It's not a wasted effort at all. Longpress is not the same as 3D touch and it is a shame that Apple will be getting rid of this entirely. I would hope that they can find a way to mimic 3D touch in future iPhones, because it's a feature that's extremely handy and convenient. I can't picture going back to using a phone without 3D touch.

The example keeps getting brought up that long-pressing an app icon on the home screen activates wiggle mode--my guess is that the rumored homescreen/springboard revamp in iOS 13 will include a substantial change to the user flow that eliminates this problem altogether.

3D Touch was useless from the beginning. And it makes the devices thicker and more expensive for Apple.
Long press and hold is the solution, works great on the spacebar for moving the cursor in iOS 12.
Sure, you can't select any words though :/
The best way to make selections.

Long touch gesture was always superior to pinching your phone one handed. Should've fired the person who came up with 3D Touch.

I never understood the point of an actual '3D Touch' hardware panel.
Why couldn't they have just used a software long press. and give a a simple vibration when doing it.

It's also getting confusing, so 'wiggle mode' isn't considered a 'Haptic Touch/3D Touch'?

If true that 3D Touch will be eliminated completely from new 2019 models, then good riddance.

It is something that most iPhone owners do not use, and most developers do not implement. Even Apple hasn't been very good at making it useful. Getting rid of 3D Touch support completely will mean a more consistent iOS UI target for developers, and a more consistent UI experience for users.

i use it dozens of times a day. just about every time i open my phone.

i tried to see how long i could by turning it off, to see if i could manage with an XR and i lasted 2 hours.

Are you trying to say that the cMP was a wasted engineering effort? I have to disagree, the 4,1 and 5,1 are almost 10 years old, and can still out run a new Mac trash can when properly equipped.

12 cores
PCIe SSD's
Truck Loads of Ram
More bays than you know what to do with

I would love to hear the logic behind your thoughts........

cMP means trash can does it not? I always assumed the c in cMP means compact - am I wrong? In any event, I edited my original post to clarify.

The XR is actually thicker than the XS though so that argument is flawed. Space bar still isn't as precise or large enough as having the entire keyboard to select everything you want, like dragging to highlight paragraphs of text.

One of my favorite features. If they roll out 12.1 quickly, with Shortcuts for app opening, it'll give me another reason to get an XR.

...the feature can only be implemented for actions that don't already rely on a long press. For example, long-pressing on an app icon on the home screen enables "wiggle mode," allowing apps to be deleted or rearranged on the home screen.

IMO, arranging and deleting apps is not an everyday activity. Perhaps, move the task to Settings. This would prevent users from activating it accidentally, and free the gesture for other purposes.

3D Touch could or could have not been useful but it sure wasn't going anywhere with an half baked from Apple.

You don't launch a new feature that requires effort from developers like that. For me it seemed like a lesson that Apple of all companies would teach others and not fail at.

Just compare that with the effort Apple did embracing the notch. On the other hand... touchbar.

You can turn it off in Settings -> General -> Accessibility

First thing i do is turn off 3d touch on technically challenged user's iPhones. This feature confuses the heck out of people as it interferes with lots of other functions when it's accidentally activated (such as copy and paste).

Funny they were able to do this via Jailbreak 2 years ago...another borrowed idea from apple.

So basically Haptic Touch for devices where 3D Touch isn’t technically possible or is cost prohibitive. I wonder if some form of Haptic Touch will come to the new iPads.

It’s not useless. Currently long press is used to move or delete an app on the home screen. 3D Touch is used is used for shortcuts. I use those shortcuts all the time.
