Really hard to do a comparison, but here's the best I could come up with (iPhone 4 overlayed):

Wow, thanks! That's pretty neat!

But anyone else get the feeling that what looks like the "elongated home button" might just be protective stickers or something like that?

Do you pay full price for the iPhone when pre-ordering? Wouldn't it be better to just get it from your carrier for $200-300 on a plan? Or is pre-ordering for the people that replace their iPhones every year?

Thats what I thought to. To me it looks like the "home button" has some sort of writing on it like what would be on a sticker.

Pre-ordering is just basically ordering the phone but you're just going to have to wait. For example, if I have an upgrade, I'll go through the standard upgrading procedure depending on my carrier through the Apple website. You don't have to necessarily go to your carrier's website

What about for new customers? I want to have it on launch day, but I'm not looking for the $700-800 unlocked version; can I pre-order through Apple if my carrier doesn't offer pre-orders for contracts?

I'd rather have a touch home button not the physical button but whatever. :D

I agree, especially since I've had three iPhone 4's replaced due to failed buttons. Even though I plan to skip the iPhone 5 in favor of the iPhone 6, if they implement a touch sensitive button now, the one on the iPhone 6 will be even better. That's how Apple does things.

No, to get a discount "handset subsidy" you have to be able to enter the carrier selection in the Apple online store. Who is your carrier of choice?

Apple launches the iPhone around the world in country groups. It is not clear that Apple will offer an unlocked iPhone X in all countries at launch. For example, they just began selling the iPhone 4 unlocked here in the US in mid June 2011!

Like Dave^ summed it, your carrier basically has to be official with Apple so if not, you cannot pre-order, not even for unlocked.
