I agree with your take and it honestly just cracks me up.
We are so far beyond what basically everyone needs to do essentially everything.

Tech is in such a depressing place to me.
The ideas have all run out (seemingly) and it's now just trying to turn everything to "11" and/or turn the screws on consumer costs, as opposed to solving actual issues.
You aren't a true professional unless your display is emitting in the IR spectrum which *I* work in.
 
Current OLED panels already display over 1 BILLION colors. I wonder how many people can tell the difference or even care? Sounds like another reason to increase the price by using a more expensive panel technology.
why do you feel the need to share your opinion about technology you clearly do not understand?

1) 1 billion colors refers to quantization of colors, not how vivid those colors are. this has no relation to color gamut only the bit depth of the display technology
2) most apple displays are actually still 8 bit, so in reality they can cleanly output only 16 million colors. 10 bit refers to 10 bit like presentation in gradients where the low levels of quantizations are apparent. apple achieves this with dithering
3) you cant tell the difference because you dont know what your looking for, you dont know where its noticeable (p3 red is much better than srgb while blue is similar), and probably dont even know which content is taking advantage of it, because most stuff is still mastered for srgb.

While I wouldn't say I need it, I did see a difference between sRGB and P3 in photography.

There are also some nice use cases in web design too where you can use media queries to make some colours really pop. Again not a necessity by any means, but considering where phone displays were 20 years ago and I thought "nice, 256 colours!", there's always new ways things to experience and take for granted I suppose.

At any rate. Goodbye eyeballs. The only way to push out billions upon billions of FAKE colors is to use wicked temporal dithering.
You think the dithering on the current MacBooks is bad - we ain’t seen nothing yet. Utter pixel flashing chaos.
Glad I got my sRGB iPad a while back. The end of a (healthy) era.

Well it is not about the number of colours. It is about WHICH colours it can display.

If there are colours that were previously out of the range and they can now be displayed, that is a huge win.

I think the Studio Display XDR probably already have this, they just don't talk about it. It can cover both P3 and Adobe RGB but they don't fully overlap so it has to actually support a wider gamut that encloses both P3 and Adobe RGB (think of it as drawing a bigger triangle that would enclose the two "smaller" triangles of P3 and Adobe RGB on the CIE color space chart)

Also gamut coverage isn't equal to the number of colors (bit depth/bits per color or channel). Apple has been using 10bpc in their displays for quite some time already.
 
It means it will have better coverage of all the colors that humans can perceive (i.e. real world colors). There are colors that exist when you look outside but cannot be produced on screens yet.

to answer your contention that you continue to imply that normal people dont care: well yea they dont care about display tech in a vacuum but they do care about nice looking images and shows! you bet your ass standard pictures out of the iphone camera will support the new color gamut as soon as the display tech trickles down over there. but the initial audience this tech is gonna target is people who make stuff, in other words macbook pro users!

I thought some of the only OLEDs on the market that get close to 95% coverage of BT.2020 are Samsung’s QD-OLEDs. Curious to see if this is a precursor to moving over to those displays, or if other industry makers can really somehow match their performance by improving standard WOLED.
Chinese manufacturers are claiming to have reached 95% or better as well. LG is now achieving 90% with Tandem WOLED and is aiming for 100% in 2030: https://en.ubiresearchnet.com/sid-2026-bt2020-oled-display-trends/

Note that there is a trade-off between brightness and color coverage, hence the single percentage number doesn’t represent the whole story.

To be fair, it's not a huge win. Unlike going from monochrome monitors to color monitors which was a qualitative change, covering more colors is a smaller, incremental improvement.

Maybe MacBook Air might also get OLED many years from now. I would love to see an OLED iMac. Wonder what screen size it will be. Will be a very expensive computer.
