I think they focused on the hardware with the i4 and that this year it'll be the software that knocks our socks off.

I honestly have very high expectations for iOS 5.

I do too. my expectations have graduallly increasing over time. I REALLY hope apple doesn't disappoint.

I don't really want too much for the iPhone. Improved notifications. Added info on lockscreen (weather widget, ability to scroll through all notifications, email etc). Honestly I think iOS 4 is pretty good for a PHONE

but now iOS 5 for the iPad is where my expectations are higher. In addition to the above I want a much improved multitasking UI, dashboard, handfuls of multifinger gestures, file system... A lot of stuff can really be ported over from Lion, which is why my expectations are high :)

I mean real tabs, like so:

Have you actually used the tabs in a xoom? I did and I wan't really too pleased with it. They take away from precious screen space. Safari is minimal and that's how I like it.

Tabs are good for a computer, not a tablet.

I totally agree, I don't see anything wrong with how Safari's multiple window system is now.

iOS 5 will be really good. Apple is no slouch on software. Sometimes they omit basic features until they find a way to implement them that satisfies their interface needs. Multitasking is great in iOS, wouldn't want it any other way. "True multitasking" is for a computer, not a smartphone. The current system, alongside push notifications, works very well.

My list is this:
- keep optimizing the OS for responsiveness
- heavily reduce application crashing
- custom text tones
- improve the notification system
- improve the weather application
- keep improving upon Safari (check)
- wireless bluetooth syncing
- THE ABILITY TO ADD / REMOVE WORDS TO THE F'N SPELL CHECK DICTIONARY (sorry for the caps, this one really pisses me off ;) )

So, you all probably use Safari on the iPad. I used Atomic, and it's fantastic, the tabs are much smaller than Honeycomb's Chrome and switching between tabs - by clicking once, is much faster than clicking 2 times, with a animation inbetween. Apple could at least give us the option.

Atomic web: takes up hardly any extra space.

It is a trade off with the tiny screen of the iPhone. I bought and love atomic browser and can't live without the tabs. It also has a full screen mode. Seems like they have everything covered. Using Safari now just feels boxed in.

Wow, Atomic looks great. I was never a fan of using other than the default mobile browser on an iDevice, due to security. But i think i'll be changing that habit now. How secure is Atomic?

why are you worried about security? Doesn't apple meticulously screen every app before it is approved for the app store?

Imo the only actual leg up Android has over iOS is notifications. Android's home screen customization is only important to stupid teenagers, or people too clueless to realize that they are trading some weak ass customization for a more fluid user experience.

The iOS user experience absolutely dominates Android...every time.

It's very secure (same as safari); basically it's based on safari's engine, with a load of extra features and options.

If you mean security as in crashes, then it's better than safari - it can hold more pages and tells you when you're running low on RAM.

Generalizations are fun to make, aren't they? :)

Wow thanks, i did some research and i bought the app. Thanks for the tip guys.

On topic:

I feel that if iOS 5 doesn't deliver then i'll be jumping ship. Apple might not have any competition in the tablet market, but in the smartphone market they do.
And probably use my iPhone as an iPod Touch+

If Apple added all this extra crap, they'd be Android, which is why they shouldn't. Widgets are the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Apple strives for simplicity and people apparently like that. If they liked ugly and unfinished and complicated, they'd just get an Android phone.

Notifications in pull down status bar, I'd love if Apple copied Android with Notifications since IMO that's the best way to implement it, plus integrate a multitasking switcher into the pull down status bar.

Widgets or maybe dynamic icons like the Calendar icon would be great.

Enable Backgrounder like multitasking, i.e. by default keep the current multitasking but allow users to go into full, real multitasking with the apps they choose like Backgrounder.

Add a configurable snooze function to the alarm app

Percentage on the calculator!

I agree with the notifications, I hate how my screen lights up every time some text or app sends me a notification..

Also it'd be awesome to see swype come to the iPhone!

Also allow me to edit the damn dictionary!

What a horrid thought.

The iPhone 4 external antenna, is a poorly designed ugly design element.

The upcoming iPhone 5 needs to be completely redesigned. Return the antenna to the interior of the phone and give the handset a fresh new look. Include a phone that places clear calls & holds them until you hang up. Get rid of the tiny display & include a modern display of at least 4.0" in size. Increase battery life and get rid of the all glass back.

Apples got some work to do. Or keep bragging about huge sales volume till they collapse. Nothing lasts forever.

+1 I hope the current design is just a brief moment in history. If they want to blow anyone's socks off this year, I don't see how it can be software only. Really, what else can they do with the software other than tweak what they've already got? Themes and lockscreen widgets are about the only other place they can go (yes, and notifications).

I also foresee them putting a back cover on the iPhone that's similar to the iPad 2. Now that's a modern, sleek design.

Just maybe, after all the heat they got for their design choices on the iPhone 4, they immediately set about redesigning the whole thing.

Swype, notifications and a softer sim-locking (not requiring a jailbreak/baseband crash to unlock) would alone give android a run for its money.

I've been using Atomic on my iPhone for a couple weeks. For some reason Safari/Macrumors won't let me view the desktop site, only mobile, but Atomic let's me spoof the browser.

Tabbed browsing works well; I much prefer it over the windowed browsing in Safari. Only things it's missing for me are: tap to go to top of page, and syncing bookmarks with MobileMe.

I'm sure equally, there's a lot of people who would disagree with your opinion on the iP4 design. Somehow I don't think :apple: is struggling with selling the iP4.

Now stop moaning and go buy yourself an Android phone :) Since they are so much more superior and have the computational power of NASA which enables it to multi-task a billion apps simultaneously...
