Also... The West Edmonton Mall store opened this weekend... Didn't get any MacRumor coverage :(
Since Mac Rumors is sort of a user contributed resource, why not take some pics of the new store and upload them. Especially if there are any hot chicks working at the store, which there probably won't be,but if there are upload them.

I know... I was hoping that some other local user would have had taken pics... I havent had a chance to get there yet. Will attempt to get there soon... the hot chicks working at the store will hopefully be picked up by me at the same time.

I dig Apple, but there is no way I'm giving them my SS#.

And frankly, I see no purpose whatsoever in asking for that kind of information.

Do they want my tax records too?

wtf.

Please read previous 10 pages of people commenting... its for a credit check... im sure you have had one in the past.

So when I go to an Apple retail store to buy an iPhone, I'll be buying one that requires an ATT contract? That means two trips for me, one to Apple one to ATT? Also, I thought as a developer you needed to test your apps on an iPhone that is not associated with a phone number? Maybe I'm wrong about that, but if it's true, I am not sure how developers will obtain unlocked phones for testing.

I assume that would be a part of joining the developer program... dont know that answer... but I do know that the Apple store will be activating on behalf of AT&T ... so no it would only be the one trip

So I am going to do a Family Plan and I want to have 3 lines total,
Line 1- iPhone
Line 2- iPhone
Line 3- a regular cell phone

Can Apple accommodate me with setting up a new Family plan with this set up, or do I need to see an AT&T store.

If things work the same for AT&T down there the way it used to when I worked for Rogers in Canada... Yes.... Kindof.

Apple will only be selling the iPhone and not the other handset that you want for the 3rd line. So you would have to get into their AT&T store at a different time and activate that additional line.

well as far as check at a store the store doesn't have to take it and i work at business and require a phone #. california tells us as business we have to. if a person bounces that check and doesn't have a phone # they won't go after that guy. if they go after that guy they will get us our money and make that guy go to a check writing school. and that is fact for california

Please apply grammar filter.

If your adding a line it would be needed... if your upgrading ... then you should not need this information.

You will still need the information even if you are upgrading from what I am reading. It doesn't say that upgrades don't need to give the info.

It will need to be the account holder's SSN. As long as you have a gov issued ID you are fine, but I am not too sure about the gift card/store credit thing. I hear that it will be touch and go, you may be approved, you may not.

My SIN # HAS NEVER been requested when buying a phone\ signing a contract. Don't know where you got that from... im Canadian BTW.

And on another note, why the hell would you want to just give yout your SIN\SSN?

A SS# is asked for to run a credit check in the US.

Are they serious? What if you're already an iphone customer? Do you still need to be ready with your freakin social security number to transfer the existing account to the slightly newer iphone???

I would say probably not... but why take any chances. Since the process is going to take time, might as well be as prepared as possible.

I doubt as a current customer of aT&T with a 1st gen iPhone I need a SS#, but I will pull it out of my safe deposit box just in case, because I have no intention of wasting my time.

Just for the record.

They aren't asking for the card, they are just asking for the number.

It should be memorized and they even let you punch it into the little box.

Agreed! And you may not even know why.

The Privacy Act of 1974 states there are only 4 instances when a social security number can be demanded or expected ... And purchasing a phone IS NOT one of them. Stand up to your right to maintain your privacy. Big government controls America too much already. End rant!

And they have the right to not extend you credit without getting your social security number for a credit check.

Which means you better be prepared to put down $1000 for a deposit in order to get a phone from AT&T if you refuse to provide the information they require for a credit check.

Anyone know the rules about whether non-account owners can buy the iPhone 3G at an Apple Store? I went to an AT&T store a couple days ago and they told me that although I am not the account owner, the account owner (my mother) could add me as an Authorized user, and that would enable me to purchase the iPhone 3G and renew my account. (Note: I'm a "current iPhone owner," and thus upgrade eligible; I did sell my iPhone a couple weeks ago, but didn't buy another subsidized phone, so I should still me upgrade eligible. Though I guess we're still unsure how Apple Stores will deal with this.). Anyway, we added me as an Authorized user online, and it seemed to work fine.

But now I'm curious whether this will pass at the Apple Store as well. I'd rather go to the Apple Store (more supply, better service), but I really don't want to wait in line for 8 hours only to be turned away. Any ideas?

Yeah the idea for you and for everyone else who is unsure about this.. Don't mess around. Go to an AT&T store. It would be dumb to go waste your time and have to change stores because of something you knew in advance.

I know these forums will be full of people cussing Apple and AT&T on launch day because people went to the wrong store even though they knew they should not have gone to Apple.

Unless you have a very straight forward and basic set up go to AT&T.

It doesn't matter how cool you think Apple might be. I went to Apple last year, it was not that cool. You herded in and herded out.

Anyways, people please for your own sake and for the sake of me not having to spend my weekend flaming you, go tot he AT&T store if there is any doubt or question about whether or not Apple will be able to help you.

And for any company or business to "deny to any individual" a service available to the general public because of their right to refuse to disclose a "non-essential" element such as a social security number for the utilization of that service would be considered discrimination. Apple and AT&T are government-created corporate entities (as are all corporations) and therefore bound by government regulation.

It may be true that the Privacy Act does not say a company (such as Apple) cannot "request" your social security number be provided, but that cannot "require" it or deny you their product or service if your choice is to NOT provide it, which is your right as a citizen. If they do, then they are engaging in discrimination, just the same as if they denied selling your their product because you were Hispanic or Catholic or disabled.

The "rules", as you put it, are to pay for the product and pay for the service. The company can only deny you the product or service if you can't pay. A SSN is not required for payment. Again ... JMO

They can deny you their product for any reason they want besides discrimination. And this is not discrimination.

If you don't want to provide them a SS# it is easy, they will take $1000 cash instead. Easy peasy. They will not be refusing you anything.

So you are saying businesses can discriminate for other reasons? What about disabilities? What about having long hair? If a business owner doesn't like people with long hair, they are free to deny a service they otherwise offer to the general public?

Yes. I can not sell you my product because you have long hair. Or because you drive a lexus, or because you like Coke instead of Pepsi. As pointed out businesses can refuse ANY customer from buying their product except for legally defined discrimination. They don't need a reason, or they can use any other reason.

People with 2 kids can't buy my pizza. People named John can't shop in my grocery store. All legal.

i.e. -- I walk into Best Buy to purchase a CD. I walk to the counter, and the young lady says, "Sir, I'm sorry, but I can't sell to you because Best Buy does not sell to people with blue eyes." You're telling me they can do this? It is THEIR RIGHT as business owners? That is the same as saying, "We won't sell to you because you are black or Jewish." ... and THAT IS discrimination.

Absolutely 100% their right.

And no it is not the same thing. We have some discriminatory protections for a reason.

Apple only sells iPhones, so go to AT&T for sure.

Wow it only took 11 pages for finally someone to use their head.

If you deny a SSN, then it is an Automatic Deposit. Oh, and by the way, if you refuse the credit check, dont expect to get the 199 price. You will be buying either an unsubsidized phone(read full price) or an non-upgrade eligible phone(read 399-499) plus some sort of a deposit. More likely dependant upon the cost of your monthly service plan.

ATT is not going to refuse you an iphone for you not wanting to provide a ssn. However, they will make it so heavily priced that you will be happy to provide a ssn to run the credit check.

LOL ... out here in Alberta my insurance company FINALLY has stopped bending me over... Don't even get me started on that! What do you have to give for a credit check in Fr.? Or do they just skip that... and your iPhone comes with a free crape.... mmmm crapes.

Hello ... I don't know actually. I'm 42 ... never had a credit card or a bank loan. I depend on my civilised better half for all things bureaucratic and officious. At heart I'm a savage and can't walk the "bottom liners" line. That's why I'm amazed about all the checks etc ... leave it alone .. keep life nice and simple .. if you want one .. walk into a shop and put the money down. There's far too much over intrusion and complication about ordinary things now.

Nah .... you get a free photo of Sarkozy on the crapper!

CASH IS Accepted at Apple Store... Kind of..

Hello All,

I am not sure if this has been posted. I have confirmed with my local Apple store that if you are planning to pay with cash, it IS NOT a problem. The manager told me that what Apple Store employees are directed to do is when you identify you are paying with cash, they will first help you purchase an Apple Gift Card, and then allow you to purchase the iPhone. It is now CONFIRMED that you are able to do this, and Apple Store employees will be more than happy to help you through this process. Of course, to save time, they recommend you buying your Gift Cards before the launch day!

Hope this helps some!

per person iphone limit?

has anyone been able to find out the Apple Store per person iphone limit, last year at At&T it was 1 per person and the Apple store was 2 per person? i hope it is at least 2 at the apple store. my local apple store doesn't know right now, do you think apple will release this info tomorrow? I believe they also did not announce the limit until the day before last year.

The deposit is about $500 and you still get the subsidized price. It's still a two-year contract, everything is the same but instead of an SSN you just provide the deposit which is credited back in a year. No big deal, I've done the same with Verizon. I did have to ask a couple people at an AT&T store before I got this answer, so you may have to insist on speaking to a manager. Unfortunately, Apple retail stores appear not to be set up to do this although I have been told that they are able to take a deposit if you fail the credit check but can't skip the credit check entirely.
