Sticking my iP4 SIM into my Nexus One when I want to tether is a PIA, but it is a far less expensive PIA... especially since I'm grandfathered into "unlimited data".

PATCHED !!!!!

Boom Baby !

And lets just prepare for 4.3

So what,...I don't give a rats ass about CDMA

Flawed Tech gets the boot,....

We shall sooner see iPhone on Cricket

Has anyone looked into the note's of this update yet? I wonder what the fixes were?

+1 for Data and voice at the same time for the Verizon iPhone. I will miss that. I had my mind made up on getting the Verizon one when it comes out but sense I've been laid off work for 5 months now and going on 6, I have to wait, and if I have to wait, I might as well wait till June/July for the update and hope its good and the form factor doesn't change and get thinner.

You can't turn on the hotspot without the tethering unless you jailbreak.

Interested about the tethering your speaking about I currently use my android hot spot feature all the time and I just turn it on and I can connect up to 5 devices using my password? 2gb cap a month and I never get close to that. I love the hot spot feature! Def. Convenient at times when I have needed to use my iPad in the car.

you mean this ipsw has been jailbroken? now of course they have to do the new firmware and i don't probably some other stuff

That lets the phone do simultaneous voice and data or work in exotic locales such as Europe?

No! Thats whats so good about the update, the phone will actually allow people to have a real conversation. Not 6 calls to have a 3 minute conversation!

So whats the hold back with this issue with AT&T? Is it a bandwidth issue due the limitations of 3G? Will it be improved or eliminated with AT&T's "4G" ? I think if Apple would get a 4GLTE chip set for a near future iPhone that Voice and Data could be handled with no problems.

The issue not many seem to know is what occurred when AT&T took over Cingular. To stave off bankruptcy Cingular had been leasing many of their towers to t-Mobile (roughly 30-40%). At the time AT&T acquired Cingular these leases were renewed. Additionally, it takes a long time (anywhere from 2-3 years) for new towers to be built. Research needs to be conducted to determine what area's would benefit from new towers, cities and town boards need to approve the towers, finally the towers are built.

In 2007 came the popularity of the iPhone, and AT&T's 3G system was overloaded with the second generation (the first iPhone running on EDGE didn't seem to suffer so much from service as the 3G system). SoCal (especially L.A.) is notoriously worse due to Beverly Hills and other area's refusing towers in their backyards (while complaining of inadequate service).

No matter how much money AT&T earned from the iPhone, it doesn't mean towers and service can be immediately improved. Hopefully the combination of AT&T subscribers leaving for VW with AT&T finally building more towers and improving their infrastructure may equate to better service.

3,2 was most likely the field test units for the Dual-mode iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA). Wasn't good enough for release, hence they went with the CDMA only iPhone 4.

Never takes more than two pages on these message boards before it turns into a, "my cellular phone carrier is better than yours!" Some of you guys defend these companies like they are your children.

*Edit - sorry, didn't mean to quote you.

why is there a link to the .ipsw when there isn't a phone on the market to support it? Kinda odd.

Developers, and so it's ready the moment someone could receive a unit for update (if necessary).

Also, as I just read somewhere else, apparently some Journalists have already received units so this would allow them to review them as retail units and not running .1 behind.

Apple has struggled to build a good working phone. During this period I was using both an iPhone & AT&T 3G Blackjack. The Samsung Blackjack was a great phone. Loud, clear, & no dropped calls. Something the iPhone could not do. I later learned it was due to the chipset Apple was using. Not completely compatible it was an opportunity for Apple to point the finger at AT&T. The loyal Apple believers bought into it and AT&T took the hit. Prior to the iPhone, AT&T's 3G had a very good reputation.

I had a CDMA Blackberry on Verizon then as well, and their network was also quite good. It will be interesting to see how Apple does this time around. I bet they place a high priority since they're finally on the network that many view as the best. My Droid X on Verizon performs as well as my Captivate on AT&T so everyone should be happy.

Software is not likely to fix a lack of hardware. Hardware that can do CDMA voice and data simultaneously isn't available just yet, supposedly those chips will land this year.

I think it's probably just a bug fix update for units already built and in transit already.

the htc thunderbolt will support SVDO and most likely will launch in a few weeks.
