Regarding iChat remote control of another's computer:
it's everyone with a computer using parent's dream too
Would you please explain what you mean by that?

I think they meant:

it's "everyone with a computer-using parent"'s dream too.

To which I don't know if I agree. I kind of enjoyed my hour long phone conversations with my father when he got his first computer. :D

"Where's it gone?"
"Where's what gone?"
"Where's my email?"
"I don't know. Did you send it to me?"
"Did you get it?"
"No."
"So where has it gone?"

Do all Apple Retail employees have perfect nails like he does?

And on the list of shared machines in finder, it still has Steve Jobs MacBook Pro :D

Hahaha, you think that screen is photoshopped into the iMac???

It is.

I thought that and it looks very much so, however it is the real screen to some degree. For example, when he's using iChat he looks to the camera and you can see the side of his head in the window on the screen and as he turns back to the computer you can see his head move on the screen.

he actually got that shirt from Steve's closet.

It's called the iSteve trend if you haven't noticed...

It's a new fad where people over 40 can get away looking like Steve for about $2 or $3!! Yes that's true folks, NOW YOU CAN LOOK LIKE STEVE JOBS! FOR ONLY $2.99 AND FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKS!!!!!

And if you're like me, not even close to 40 or 50? No worries! For only an additional $6.99 you can get YOUR hair looking like Steve's! With this "Do it your self" shampoo and color in one! "Side effects may include hysteria, nausea, paranoia, illusions of grandeur, gas, blurred vision, diarrhea, anal leakage, loss of appetite, impotence and in severe cases depression, loss of hearing, hives, mouth ulcers and lactation."

Order NOW and receive a pair of glasses ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!!!!!!!!

Be like STEVE TOOOOOODAY!!!!!!!!!!

Too funny I have one of these a week!

Everything seemed very quick in the tour video... anyone know how fast Leopard actually is on say a Macbook Pro? Faster/slower than Tiger?

Ya, I wondered about that. Everything was SOOO fast. Do you think they sped it up? Or was that really how fast it would run on a brand new fresh comp?

Well here's how it works....

First they have at least 2 or 3GB of ram installed, probably 3.

Then they have all the applications pre-loaded once before if not twice (meaning they launch it a couple of time and then quit it so it fills the ram)

Then they can simple launch any app they wish and it will launch on one or two bounces. On my MacBook Pro, Photoshop CS 3, launches in one bounce and Aperture with half a bounce.

As for the Video Chat, it's simple, the whole thing is done locally, and not over an actual internet connection where they are streaming the content limited by their upload and download speeds.

Otherwise I can assure you, that on a new MacBook Pro or an old one for that sake, the new Leopard actually runs THAT fast!

Another note to mention is speed of your HD and how much content you have one it. Also, depending on when you install an App, meaning where on the disc, it plays a tiny role to... Say you install Adobe CS 3 one year after you got your mac, then the content will be installed somewhere much deeper on the HD which in turn CAN take a little longer to access.. But, it's not a big deal...

So there...

It's THAT fast...
:)

Must be a newer build of Leopard than the 9A559.

Take a look at the different Front Row icons:

First the Guided Tour's version, 2nd the 9A559 build version:
That's a nice icon if you ask me. But that Exposé icon is extremely ugly.

It is.

Actually I think the demonstration is pasted into the iMac via final cut or something.

If you look closely at the Finder->Coverflow demonstration of video playback, where he stops the video, you can see how the video is still playing for a few secs and then stops, when we're returned to the cam of him and the iMac.

Oh well, just something i noticed :p

Ya I get that, but still it looked very fast.
Photoshop in 1 bounce? Mine is 9. Thats pretty sweet man. I do only have 16gigs free on my HD. But what else could be the reason for mine taking so long compared to yours? What machine you running?

I have a MacBook Pro the 2.4Ghz and 3GB ram with almost nothing on the HD other than the Pro Apps I use. Everything else is on an external HD.

Oh and I do the usual producers, like permissions check before and after any installation and do random checks to see if the permissions are in order.

Not much more, really... Keep your main HD as clutter free as possible, and you'll be ok. Mine really only needs one bounce and the app is open and ready to use, not actual loading with the splash screen etc. but the main work bench is open and ready for work.

Same goes for Aperture...

Oh and if you have other apps running in the background that might take the juice out of your ram or processors that can be a factor too. Or you have a ton of plug ins in your photoshop and one of them may be sucking off of Rosetta. If that's even possible...

This may be obvious, but you can tell that the video (or at least this particular section) was made sometime last month, because when Jon mentions going back a week to when he last saw the missing photos during the Time Machine section, the date says September 16, 2007.

Umm no it doesn't but we've already been though that thread.
From Apple's MO my guess is that OS 11 will put Vista to shame. Leopard does continue the trend of putting XP to shame though.
What Leopard does do is point and laugh at Vista for having to be held back a year in class vs. XP that is in the "special" class. You can ID XP by the guy in the corner coloring with green and blue crayons.
If we get as big of an upgrade in OS 11 as what there was between 9 -> 10 then let the public shamings begin.

PS- *sighs* I really need to drop some money on a new 3.5" FW800 enclosure and get a 500GB harddrive. I have a feeling that Time Machine is going to be a beast on my computer. :\ Does anyone know if Time Machine works on drives formatted with FAT32?

You need to use HFS+ for Time Machine because it uses Hard Links.

The only way around it would be to create a sparse image in Disk Utility and back up Time Machine to that. Technically, that should work

good observation. how the hell did Jon have leopard build 9a581 in september?

Do you think there is any chance that apple will through in HD DVD support as an added bonus?

There could be endless ways they did this, the most logical seems to be that they made the video before Leopard was GM, so everything would be perfect for when it was declared, and it could be posted ASAP.

They could have also just done it last week and set the date on the computer back to September, it's certainly not hard, but is a little less likely than the logical solution above.

If Apple mentions Blu-ray support somewhere, then they could have HD-DVD too, however, seeing as they support Blu-ray over HD-DVD, if they haven't made any remarks on Blu-ray, HD-DVD wont be there.

Time Machine

I'm excited about Time Machine, but for me there a lot of questions:
Has anybody seen any recommendations for the size of the TM hard drive? Can I easily move the TM data to a bigger hard drive? What happens if you use a laptop without the TM hard drive? Will the TM information temporarily stored on the laptop and then updated on the external hard drive once you reconnect it or do you lose it?
