Is there an easy 3G on/off toggle in the settings? I would want to make sure it only uses wifi unless I really need 3g for a service related issue or don't have wifi. I know while in the car and have push services turned on I would hate for it to download email when it could wait until I get home and use wifi.

Wrong. You can cancel from the ipad itself at any point before the billing cycle ends, and on the day after the billing cycle you are cancelled.

What the heck part of "Yeah, but it's not a re-occuring billing" that I was quoting and replying to IS CORRECT?

edit: if you meant that i was implying that you can only cancel the day before, sure, you can cancel early. my point was that you can't cancel day of and there is automatic renewal if you don't cancel early/day before.

I canceled my pre order a few days ago and yesterday I got an email from apple telling me that my order is on time and it will arrive today... I'm a little bit concerned that I might still recieve my orginal order or was that email just an mistake?? Help me out guys... Am I getting an free 64GB ipad?

Well, I got OS 3.0 free on my iPod for no apparent reason. But I have a feeling you should go ahead and check the ol' credit card account.

Yes. I was referring to the "day before" bit, and to the "log into the website" bit.

Where did you see this? I've been looking specifically for confirmation that this is true and haven't found it. How do we know that service doesn't just end as soon as you cancel it?

If true, I intend to activate and immediately cancel each month. And then reactivate it the next time I need it. That way, assuming I don't need 3G every day, I'll pick up a few days at the end of each billing cycle which I don't have to pay for.

There was actually a screen posted a couple days ago that showed three choices (the two plans, and "cancel"), and text on the screen said something to the effect of "Your option takes effect at the end of your current billing period."

i'll try and verify this if my activation works. 5 calls to my bank to find out it is an at&t issue. two calls to apple at&t support, now i'm on hold with at&t wireless billing support. just had to give the imei number and sim number. was having data plan activation and data plan activation failure dueling popups

Hmm. Wonder if the activation servers are just slammed.

Could be. At&t keeps slamming my credit card with 0.00 charges, hits a limit of 7 failed charges, which locks my card out and i have to call my bank.

I've given up, I'll try again tomorrow. It did look like the "cancel your plan" window is _immediate_ cancellation, not end-of-the-month.

Pretty sure it's not immediate (poking around with mine now) - after all, there is no pro-rating, so they'd end up causing themselves no end of problems with people accidentally hitting the button.

As Apple has laid out, there are two options for service: a 250MB metered plan for $15 per month and an unlimited data plan for $30 per month (the same as the iPhone’s 3G data plan). Both are recurring plans by default—you’ll be charged every 30 days on the date your current plan ends. You can change this once you’ve signed up by logging into your account and tapping “Add Data or Change Plan,” where you can switch to another plan or cancel your existing plan. In either case, your new choice won’t take effect until your current plan expires, so once you’ve laid down your money, you’re in for the month.

Wanna bet they left the taxes out of the example because every taxing district is different? NEVER assume the government will miss any attempt to tax your behavior.

I have cable internet only service with Brighhouse in Florida. No tax. I had internet only in Missouri - no tax. I think if you get cable for video/voice or normal phone for video/voice, then there are all kinds of taxes. Internet only services are not taxed in many districts/states. I hope I am right.

Damn this Ipad 3G is fast! I never knew how awesome it was to surf the internet using the Atomic Web browser!

WOW apple you will made an awesome product!

I can't wait till OS 4.0 comes out on the Ipad!

That Appleseed character sure does buy a lot of stuff....

Well that stinks. I do not want a credit card for just a $30 revolving fee. I do not want to use my Visa Debit card as I had issues with companies doing autodrafts. i already have a $157 a month AT&T bill for 2 iphones. I want to just add this to my existing bill. Heck of a lot easier to check, track, and only 1 check to write out every month, instead of 2.

I bet the reason why billing is set up that way, is so that people forget to cancel it. Most people have high credit car balances and some people really do not analize their bill, like I do. I bet they are hoping people forget to turn it off, and they do not see the additional charge, as their balance is already high and some people may just mistake it for a fee. I know some people who only look at the balance and the minimum payment each month - they do not even look at the individual charges on their statement. i had to show a couple of people how they were getting ripped off with interest, late payments, and other fees they did not know about. They did not know that their $100 payment, only $30 was going toward the balance. They just assumed they bought something that month.

Also on that screen shot. Is the Cancel, just cancelling you out of the screen - or is that a way to cancel your 3g service? I bet many people will get fed up with people overwhelming the call centers and thus being put on hold, they AT&T is betting on missing the auto-renew date and thus squeezing another month out of people.

If your not careful - this could get tricky for some people.......

Translation: Stupid people are stupid.

I appreciate your trying to educate people who use credit cards, but it's a hopeless task. Also, in a few month's they will blame you for making them "pay more" to get their balance down.

How apropos.

Cellular devices have ESNs - Electronic Serial Numbers. The SIM broadcasts that ESN from the device to legitimize the device on the network. Swapping SIMs with two devices will befuddle the network, and may make the SIM unusable with either device.

This is completely false. I have had a SIM in a Blackberry, an iPhone, and back many times. Both phones worked fine on AT&T.

Just got my 64g iPad WiFi+3G delivered by FedEx!

Only problem I'm at work and the iPad is home-got to sneak our early today.

MAN do I feel you on this one. I had to sneak home to sign for it, leave it plugged in and rushed back to work during lunch. I was a ball of mess for about 5 hours and needless to say I'm still up on it now! It was all worth it!

Actually the iPhones have IMEIs so I would imagine that the iPad would have an IMEI as well. As for the SIM switching between devices, only in some instances is your IMEI/ESN/DEC verified. For example - the Rogers "My Account" app verifies your SIM and IMEI for the app to work correctly. Every time you turn on a device the SIM and IMEI are sent to the network but it doesn't really matter what IMEI is sent. This is just a way of the network tracking if you are using a valid iPhone so you can use an the matching data plan etc... if the iPad data plan code is exclusive to the iPad, odds are it won't work with the iPhone. For example (at least in Canada) iPhone data plans are not the same as BB data plans and therefore are incapable of working with opposite devices...
