I have to hold my phone REAL TIGHT with BOTH HANDS before I start to loose my signal, and then it only goes from 3 bars down to two, not the "no signal" that I see with the iPhone 4.

And my phone is a 3 year-old pos HTC too.

Well I OWN an iPhone 4 and I can't get it to fall all the way to "no signal" either. So YMMV.

Bumpers are not a case! Bumpers cover the problem area!!! Apple decide now to cash in on the iPhone case market?

Come on, seriously guys. Wood for the trees and all that.

The bumper was made to address a specific issue. Apple the style kings make a bumper as their first case, a bumper which makes iPhone 4 look like 2G, 3G and 3GS?

All smart phones have that problem if you put your hand over the antenna, yes...but not all smart phones are stupid enough to have their antenna on the bottom lower corner where your hand is extremely likely to cover it!!! The SMART place to put an antenna is the TOP of the phone where it is least likely to be covered. I guess that's beyond Apple Engineering to figure out and now they WILL pay the price. This has basically handed the market to Android until iPhone 5 comes out, if not permanently. A bumper will not solve the underlying problem which is that it's downright stupid to put the antenna in that location.

Have you not been paying attention. The FCC requires it be placed at the bottom of the phone away from the ear piece. That's already been covered.

Apple have to post the video so fast to let the world know that their phone is not the only one suffer from death grid even thought other carrier's customer never complained. Apple like to make other look bad when they're wrong, but never acknowledge other when their phone is good.

To be honest, today's event wasn't even necessary if the the bad press didn't over-exaggerate the problems. I've repeatedly said this - the iPhone 4 is only having issues with very weak reception areas and only that. Tons of people are having no problems at all. The amount of unjustified hate Apple is getting for the last few weeks is just stupid.

I don't care what kind of "tests" they do. AT&T data shows that the iPhone 4 drops less calls than the iPhone 3GS. That's solid, mass-area evidence that the iPhone 4's antenna is great.

Neither Steve or I are denying that there is a problem with the antenna for areas of low reception. In fact, 0.55% users are affected. That's actually a lot more than what I thought it was (I assumed less than 0.1%), so this is definitely a big problem…until today.

Apple has now offered a free bumper to EVERY iPhone 4 user, regardless whether they have problems or not. For the people who bought the bumper, they're refunding the money. If you're still not satisfied with your iPhone 4, just like always, you can take it back to return it.

Let's ignore the fact that a $29 (now free) case solves this entire drama, but the fact that you could have returned the iPhone 4 this entire time. I see people saying "ZOMG I CAN'T MAKE A ****ING CALL ON THIS WITHOUT DROPPING" online all the time. All I have to say to that is, as much as I like Apple, I would have returned a phone that can't even make phone calls. The fact that you're not returning it simply leads me to the conclusion you don't really have a problem, or this problem isn't so big as you have to return your phone.

You can return the phone at any time. The iPhone 4 return rates are even lower than the iPhone 3GS. What does this conclude? What I've been saying since the beginning: there is no REAL problem for the majority of consumers. All this is just bad press, in combination to PR nightmare (something Apple is infamous for).

For the sake of 0.55% of people in weak reception areas, Apple is now giving free cases to 100% of their customers. Apple is a company that cares about its image. It wants ALL users to be happy, and that's why I never lost confidence in them in the past few weeks. As a user of Apple products for years, I've seen many similar dramas. The overheating MacBook Pros. The freezing 27" iMacs. The yellowing screens of the first iMacs. All of them turned out to just be over exaggeration from the media. The iPhone 4 is the same. It was just a small problem, and now Apple is fixing it. The fact that Apple is not changing the design shows how minimal this problem is.

That's all I have to say. I learnt nothing new from today's press conference. If every consumer had enough sense like me to not believe everything newspapers and random online haters say, Apple wouldn't need to waste so much time hosting this event. They'd just post a message and hand out free bumpers. Unfortunately, not everyone has had experience with Apple through tough times before like I have, but now Apple has proven to you that they're a company you can trust to buy expensive products from. You will never be disappointed or mislead.

The only thing I'm concerned right now is how I'm going to get my free case, since I imported my iPhone 4 from the US. I guess I'll be missing out. But as I've always said, I'm amongst the 99.45% who never experienced any problems. This is the best smartphone I've ever owned.

Steve shut me up...

The hard data don't lie. I learned a long time ago that the internet is the perfect place for people to cry (legitimately and otherwise) about their bad experiences. By a wide margin, people complain more online than they give props. I have to admit, I got sucked into the whole antenna debate, even though my iPhone works perfectly.

But the facts and numbers Steve showed gave me pause, and I now see that this "problem" isn't as widespread. He didn't go so far as to say it was a hardware issue with some units, which I would have liked, but at least he said they are looking for answers. The free Bumpers he almost had to give out...

Hey, it was fun while it lasted, but Steve brought us all back to Earth. This is a non-story. Defects happen in all products, even though he didn't admit that, he offered to accept some fault on behalf of Apple.

I'm so done talking about this issue now. Thank you Steve! I'd advise the rest of you to follow suit. Apple has spoken, it's pretty much over until a quiet revision.

what else could he say???
I think it was a polished performance, he knew the world was watching and this time not just the tech world. this has got apple bigger coverage than they ever could have imagined!
front page news on every tv and website in the world!!
its amazing how big they have become:apple::apple:

Yeah same here. You may have seen my posts, I am pretty harsh on Apple. I think their handling of the whole thing has been absymal. And while my signal drops like a stone when I just barely touch that spot, it has never gone all the way down to searching. I also use a case because I think it's fairly foolish to carry an item that is nearly all glass on the outside on a daily basis for years, while thinking you will never ever have it drop in some fashion. So with the case on, I can't get it to budge.

There really is some wisdom in the idea that if you don't like it just return the stupid thing. Get a 3gs if you MUST have the iPhone ecosystem yet can't live with the iPhone 4. It's not brain surgery people.

If Apple re-designs the iPhone 4 antenna(s), what it the approval time required by the FCC? Could this happen by September 30 or is the FCC process longer?

they announced the first iphone 6 months in advance because of the FCC so 6 months or less is my guess

Anyone else find it ironic that a Band Aid would also work?

How well it works depends on the thickness and dielectric.

Thin tape: barely works.
Thick as a case: works a bit better.
Big air gap: works best.

If you've just barely lost the signal (and the i4 antenna is pretty good, so there's a good chance of that) then a poor fix that just barely works might be enough.

If you're out in the weeds with almost zero signal (-113 to -120 dBm), get your hand away from the antenna, case or not.

In between, case or bumper.

Same with all compact cell phones.

"The harder they come, the harder they fall." :apple: have become a victim of their own hype, it had to happen sooner or later.

That test chamber joke, priceless :D

.55%? No way. Thats only 16,000 people. Does Jobs really think that 16000 people caused this much of an uproar for APPLE to declare a ****ing press conference? Maybe .55% have called in, but there's way more people that have the problem and I still believe that every iPhone is affected. So that means around 1 in every 181 people will be affected. Yet somehow Consumer Reports, the most unbiased publication, randomly got THREE iPhones that didn't work??? Come on son! Get the **** outta here with that ********.

I'm going to exchange mine Sunday and see if that works and if not then ill just live with it. I don't get a lot of dropped calls but I do experience some quality issues. With a bumper it works though.

Uh, yeah, so your "feeling" is way more accurate than actual numbers. Consumers with negative opinions are many times more motivated to contact the manufacturer, or post online, than satisfied consumers. This is a well understood concept in marketing. Thus, Apple's numbers are probably accurate, given that all it takes is a phone call to complain, and it's been a while since the phones came out. Or do you really believe that there are untold masses out there who are completely dissatisfied with the antenna issue but don't feel like calling an 800 number to get a new phone or their money back. As if.

:apple: never made the hype but they do play on it and why not??
whats the joke??

in my work today I had loads of people asking me about this press con, people who would normally never even think about apple want to know whats going on, its getting crazy and apple know it!!!

I thought Apple fought their corner well today, and Steve Jobs came over as quite open and honest. There's been a huge amount of hate over this and I suspect quite a lot of it has come from folks who don't even own an iPhone but just want to see Apple fail.

Dissatisfied customers get all their money back or a free case. I suspect the ones who are still complaining just want to get as much as they can out of it by feigning more distress than they actually feel.

To those who don't own an iPhone and aren't affected by any of this but keep spilling bile all over these forums....Please ask yourself, why do you care? If you're completely honest with yourself, you may not like the answer.

well said, apple have now become the leading tech company in the world and theres people who don't like it!! tough s**t to them!!
go and buy an HTC if your not happy, and a windows 7 machine while your at it!!

I think they've responded the best way they can by giving out a case.

The excuses before that though... not so awesome.

Just look at this image:

htcdroideris-holding-20100715.jpg

His thumb is actually red where he's been holding the phone so tight. You can also tell how tightly it's being held by the fact his hand is actually overlapping the screen. You do not need to hold the iPhone 4 that tightly to cause the issue.

Yes, it's called a death grip.

But it's not a case, it's a "Bumper"! Make you feels better does it that Apple is charging $30 for a peice of material that cost less than a $1 to produce. How much do they love their user's???

Don't worry chilli I Lovvvvuue you!

I just saw Apple get shredded on the NBC news tonight. At this point it doesn't matter if the phone is actually flawed or not. The press feels that it is, and apparently they also feel that Mr. Jobs acted poorly (I forget the actual word they used). No, this isn't going to destroy Apple, but it does leave a black mark on their "permanent record". Said mark would have been much smaller if Apple had said "hey, we are working on a fix, and as soon as it is ready, we will contact you to bring your phone in for repair. In the meantime, have a bumper case on the house."
